Myrtle Reservoir update: 4 months of pre-park work ahead

Back in March, when we checked on the status of work at Myrtle Reservoir, which has now been “covered” — with a park coming to the new open space that was created – park project manager Virginia Hassinger told us she was hopeful the site would be turned over “this fall.” Today we’ve received an update from the city, saying the rest of the work on the reservoir site will start later this month – so nearby residents should watch for a return of construction activity – to be complete “by the end of October.” Hassinger has said that once the site is turned over to Parks for construction, the park should take about three months to “build.” (Here’s the approved design.)

What the heck is taking so long? The lack of coordination between SPU and Seattle Parks is inexplicable, especially considering both depts. report to the mayor. I have a theory that the parks fund is low on money so they’re dragging out every project they can hoping more $ come in. That’s just sheer speculation, but I don’t know how else to explain the utter nothing that’s going on at the site.

I have a followup question out and hope to get more info tomorrow. This came in late today and the additional work was described as “tasks” so my question is, well, specifically, what tasks? – but even when we spoke with Virginia Hassinger back in March, she said that the SPU work was the holdup. The money for the Parks portion of this is already on the books, from the last Parks levy, and most construction projects have come back with bids way under projections (which is why the Hiawatha project, for example, has yielded the HALF MILLION needed for 2/3 of the Delridge Skatepark funding) — TR

When I heard the park was going to be “covered”, I thought of Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill where the reservoir towner was buried and replaced with a fountain. I’m guessing this won’t be the case here?

No fountain. The reservoir already is buried (that work was finished last year). The park plan is linked above – TR

Well, I still wish it had some fenced area for dogs since there are already three very nice children’s playgrounds within a 5 block radius, but still…will be nice.

Sorry, comment time is over.
