Bye-bye, Blayne: West Seattle barista booted off “Runway”

blaynecrop.jpgIt was fun while it lasted, but now it’s over: Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) barista Blayne got kicked off “Project Runway” tonight (along with Terri), after a design that judges called “a joke.” However: “No one is sorrier to see you go than I am,” PR regular Tim Gunn told him. “You can’t second-guess yourself,” Blayne said cheerily and circumspectly, referring to himself. We’ve got someone at the Ginomai viewing party, so we’ll add reaction from there when we get it. ADDED EARLY THURSDAY MORNING: Here’s what Blayne’s Hotwire boss Lora Lewis told the WSB video crew afterward:

hey west seattle! go to http://www.bravotv.com/ and vote for blayne for fan favorite! betcha he could use that $10,000 prize! let’s get him the win!!!

  • mike September 10, 2008 (10:21 pm)

how about NOT spoiling it in your subject line?

  • WSB September 10, 2008 (10:27 pm)

Every other week, we’ve put the outcome after the jump (though that’s a moot point for people who read via RSS or e-mail). This time, it’s big news. It was of course out there three hours earlier because of the East Coast showing, but we waited till after the West Coast (local) airing.

  • R September 10, 2008 (10:57 pm)

That’s too bad – every week he cracks me up. :(

  • Chris M September 11, 2008 (6:11 am)

I don’t know, I think I’m with Mike on this one — you’ve been adhering to the “No spoilers on the homepage rule,” but only when there’s nothing to spoil?

I was already twitter-spoiled this morning, but I still thought WSB was going to be a “safe zone.”

  • Jessie September 11, 2008 (6:30 am)

I’m really disappointed that you spoiled me for this. All the other weeks the result were behind the cut. Why would you ruin the outcome for people now?

  • Todd September 11, 2008 (7:07 am)

So for weeks you had “no spoilers above the fold” and then when he finally loses you spoil it one minute after it airs? Ugh.

  • Creighton September 11, 2008 (7:55 am)

Holla at your boy Blayne. How’s Tim going to get along with out you? Glad you were on this season, to give it a little color. My money is on Leanne to win it all.

  • Dude September 11, 2008 (7:57 am)

How could this come as a surprise? POOPING FABRIC OUT OF HER BUTT was what one judge called his outfit. It looked like a series of cockrings tied together. Totally a joke. Perhaps he knew he was on his way out, and thought this would be a funny exit.

  • andy September 11, 2008 (8:04 am)

AACK. Still on my tivo. Come to check the bridge cam and I get this? Thanks for ruining it WSB!!! I guess i should have just gone directly to wsdot, probably no project runway spoilers there…

  • thanksalot September 11, 2008 (8:26 am)

NICE SPOILER THERE….i was going to watch this tonight…but what’s the point now? Good job WSB…

  • k September 11, 2008 (8:54 am)

spoilers were ALL over the internet folks. it’s not wsb’s responsibility to protect you from that. the show it still more than worth watching even though you know what will happen. stop the kvetching already.

  • Dude September 11, 2008 (9:02 am)

Thank you k. There have indeed been weeks when co-workers have spoiled it, but I’ve still watched the Tivo. Enough already ~watch it even though you know the results.

  • not always a fan September 11, 2008 (9:05 am)

Geeze – seems like all people want to do is whine and complain – get a life people – obviously if your a fan of the show or Blaynes you would know the outcome of the show before reading the blog – bummer he got axed but it was bound to happen to someone and as sone of the judges said……it looks like the model is “pooping material” when she turned around….hilarious!

  • Indaknow September 11, 2008 (9:34 am)

How is it really spoiling it, if it is posted AFTER the show aired? Taping shows is for convenience (I do it too!) but the world keeps on movin….

  • Donna September 11, 2008 (9:57 am)

“This time, it’s big news”? I wouldn’t exactly call it big news, but it certainly is the point in the season where you shouldn’t be spoiling it. Not cool.

  • grr September 11, 2008 (10:07 am)

soo..just because you whiners know the outcome, you won’t watch your Tivo’d show???

sheeeesh. Get a grip. It’s still fun to watch (ok…the ‘pooping fabric’ comment was pretty brutal…ugh).

It was fun while it lasted, and I’m proud of Blayne, no matter what.

and MAN am I glad to see that psycho Terri go!!!! Yeah..I think Leanne or Korto will take it. Joe stands a rough chance too. Tho..without Blayne..I dunno if I even care enough to watch it. “Terminator’ is back on the air now..

    :)

  • Scared He\'ll Spit In Coffee September 11, 2008 (10:22 am)

Am I the only person in W Sea who does NOT love Blayne and in fact finds him very rude as a barista? He “looks right through you” and always seems to be scanning the door for someone more fabulous to come in. Really? I’m the only one?? I love everyone else at Hotwire!

  • ikahana September 11, 2008 (10:30 am)

I hate to turn against a West Seattle person who tried to hit the big time and got a little attention in the process, but he deserved to go a long time ago. His stuff was horrid. And apparently, he is a nice and fun person based on the comments of folks here, but he came off as super annoying on the show. Maybe it was the editing, I don’t know – he is just a kid so I don’t want to be too hard on him, but he went way over his fifteen minutes.

  • Diane September 11, 2008 (10:54 am)

it’s been fun watching PR with other fans at the viewing party; thanks to the folks who put it together and all who showed up; really glad I made it to this last party
    ~
I was very surprised to come home and see spoiler at top of page, and don’t really get the logic behind the explanation for why it was ok this time and not all the others; but the show is still well worth watching; I’m one of those who never cares if you tell me every detail of a movie or show before watching it (except for a couple with very shocking endings; i.e., “I see dead people”)
    ~
Blayne’s creation this week was really crazy; the worst comments by all judges, “it’s a joke”
    ~
the judges have made funny/mean comments about other creations, then make the person the winner, so even the “pooping fabric” comment wasn’t a sure thing
    ~
Blayne is so young, and so accomplished; kudos and congratulations, and thanks for the entertainment; look forward to meeting him in person one of these days

  • DG September 11, 2008 (11:55 am)

Even though you’re always at risk of being spoiled when you browse online, the posting of the results behind the jump all previous weeks led to an expectation of WSB being a “safe zone.” If I hadn’t watched the show when it aired I’d be a bit irked as well.

  • pinkhouse September 11, 2008 (12:14 pm)

Count me in with those irked about the spoiler. I agree with DG- WSB made it a point to NOT spoil it for all the preceeding weeks, why now? BOOOOOO!

  • Boohoo September 11, 2008 (12:33 pm)

The world does not revolve around your TIVO or VCR. If it’s aired on “live” TV, that episode is over with and CAN be “spoiled” anywhere.

  • john September 11, 2008 (12:36 pm)

Posting this 1 minute after the show ends without a spoiler warning??!! Completely ridiculous and inexcusable.

Even SLOG put the results after a jump

  • WSB September 11, 2008 (3:29 pm)

Thanks again to everyone who has taken the time to comment.
Heaven only knows when anything even remotely similar will happen again – but when it does, we will just treat it like any other news story, and report what happens without trying to hide spoilers, etc. The problem here seems to have been largely tied to the fact that we set up the expectation that you would come here after any episode and know you weren’t going to see a spoiler, so setting up that expectation and then changing it when news happened, seems to have been the point of contention, as one longtime WSB’er put it in Twitter. If we’re going to do news, we’re going to do news, and shouldn’t pretend otherwise … consistency matters a lot, so you know what you’re going to get and can make your usage/participation/whatever decisions accordingly — TR
(who last had to personally deal with this when I worked the late news at Q13 and always recorded “24” to watch when I got home – and had to try to cover my eyes and ears while in the control room for the last few minutes of the show leading up to our newscast)

  • I have a life... September 11, 2008 (3:40 pm)

    Hey WSB,

Don’t worry ’bout it! You do an awesome job!

  • bobby September 11, 2008 (3:44 pm)

ahhh WSB don’t worry about the “spoilers”…people get a bit uppity. it is silly to be mad over a TV SHOW. let’s worry about bigger things than that…

  • JumboJim September 11, 2008 (4:21 pm)

Here, here! If it wasn’t for WSB many of you wouldn’t even know about the West Seattle connection. Maybe they did make a mistake (depends on your viewpoint) but geez people, lets cut ’em some slack….

  • jana September 11, 2008 (4:45 pm)

Right on WSB! You did nothing wrong, just keep on doing what you do best and don’t feel the need to throw your pearls to the winy swineys.

  • Teri September 11, 2008 (5:40 pm)

Blayne…Congratulations! You are following your dreams and talents. Your exit interview was the most positive one I have heard–great attitude.

Lora…thank you for being so supportive of Blayne. You have been right there, promoting and cheering him on. You are a gift to all of us.

WSB…great job on being part of the team. You were at the community showing every week; gave Blayne top billing; and continue to demonstrate your amazing community support in so many areas.

  • WSEAJeff September 11, 2008 (6:43 pm)

Guys, Thanks for spoiling it for me.
Not all of us can watch in real network provided time. booooooo guys..

  • paww September 11, 2008 (10:20 pm)

Thanks to all of you who supported and (continue to support), Blayne. The love you shower upon him is amazing. I too will miss watching him on the show, for he was the one (besides Stella), who kept everything fun in the workroom. It’s obvious that he was Tim’s favorite this season as well as the rest of the designers. We are so proud of him for going as far as he did in the show. The future holds great things for him as a designer I have no doubt.

    Thanks again West Seattle!
    Blayne’s mom, Pam

Oh.> Please be sure to get the word out to vote for Blayne for fan favorite, for he could really use the money that the winner receives. You can vote on line at project runway.com or text in your vote. Which ever way you choose, Just PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE VOTE FOR BLAYNE. :) Thanks again!

  • fluorescent carl September 12, 2008 (12:17 pm)

That was 66 muscle pants all bunched up together with some S&M on the side!!! delish!!! what’s not to like… HOT

TO THE TIVO ROBOTS… I suggest you stay in bead not open your eyes, keep them ear plugs in until you have watched your 12 hours of TV, reading news and participating in the real world is foolish!

    CARL

  • barb September 12, 2008 (5:50 pm)

Carl, I am not one of the people pissed because of the spoiler, but as far as calling people “tivo robots”, because they have to record a show that they like because they can’t watch it when it’s originally on because they either have jobs and maybe can’t be home to watch it or are sleeping because they have to work in the morning is a little unfair.

  • fluorescent carl September 15, 2008 (4:03 pm)
