Pagliacci progress?

Maybe it’s the prospect of Garlic Jim’s breathing (aromatically) down their necks. Seems Pagliacci might reconsider the issue of expanding its ridiculously small West Seattle delivery area. The lively discussion in comments on this post led at least one WSB reader to e-mail Pagliacci, and they replied by telling her they’re “getting together” to discuss it. (We e-mailed them about the same thing months ago and got a noncommittal e-mail with no followup. Hmph.) So she suggests anybody and everybody who would like to see Pagliacci deliver to more of WS, post comments to that effect. Where are you? Do you, like us, get other pizza instead because Pagliacci won’t deliver to your place? Leave a comment on this post. (No worries, you can be entirely anonymous.)

PAGS!! You’ve got to deliver around the Westwood Village area. Our choices down here are stink. We have to drive for good pizza!

  • Amy January 24, 2007 (10:05 am)

Ditto! Please deliver to the south end of WS. We love Pagliacci’s but don’t patronize them as often as we would if they delivered.

AND while we’re at it, are there any good Chinese/Thai/Japanese restaurants that deliver in the West Seattle Area (I’m in Alki), that is not Yen Wor?

  • Brian Griffin January 24, 2007 (10:23 am)

Hmmm. I’d rather they get their pickup service nailed first…before expanding delivery area. Out of 3 pickups at the WS locale (we’re new to the area), we had to wait 15 min or more than their stated “ready time”. Pizza Time (not as good, but 2 blocks away) doesn’t seem to have this problem…

We don’t patronize the West Seattle Pagliacci for takeout or anything because of their ridiculous delivery policy despite being big fans and eating there in other neighborhoods.

The fact that Pags will deliver to the far tip of Alki many miles away on difficult roads yet won’t drive down California even as far as Morgan leaves them open to charges of making distinctions based on class.

  • smj January 24, 2007 (11:15 am)

We live near Westwood Village and have tried cajoling Pagliacci’s to deliver here a few times. We drove to pick up a pizza there once but that just takes too long. Now we order from other places or make do with something else.

  • Moke January 24, 2007 (11:24 am)

Although we used to pick up a pizza at Pagliacci’s quite regularly, we’ve all but stopped. The eye opener for us was when we saw them delivering to the 6500 block of Beach Drive. (It was not a large “party” order; it was two pizzas.) While that location is not far from our home, Pagliacci will not deliver to us. I have often suspected that the delivery area for Pagliacci was set up based on the perceived affluence of the neighborhood. They have never articulated a reason for their circumscribed delivery area.

  • Eric January 24, 2007 (11:55 am)

geez… still can’t get pickup right??? We used to get pickup from them when I lived at the Morgan Junction 5 years ago – it was always a disaster that took forever.

Sad they can’t seem to handle the demand that is so obviously there!

  • J January 24, 2007 (12:26 pm)

Yes, yes, YES! We also gave up driving to Pagliacci for take-out because, like others who have commented, we had to wait past the time promised (more than once). We order pizza one per week on average and would gladly give the business back if they would deliver here (35th near Thistle) and make good on the expectations they set with their customers.

  • Paul January 24, 2007 (12:53 pm)

We’ve had the same pickup delays with Pagliacci. I like their pizza and would order if they delivered further south (we’re at webster/36th). Although I like Luciano’s and they deliver all the way down to our place…so we are happy with them.

  • GPS January 24, 2007 (1:24 pm)

I don’t want Pagliacci to deliver; their pizza is terrible, annually overrated by readers of the Seattle Weekly.

Spiro’s rules, and the pizza is always ready when you get there for pickup.

  • MAS January 24, 2007 (3:00 pm)

35th and Webster, and love Pagliacci by the slice at the HUB, but get our pizza elsewhere since they don’t deliver to our house. Didn’t know about Luciano’s until this thread started up, and it’s getting good reviews so we’ll likely just start ordering from them.

The comments about class based delivery here make me think that it’s just as well that Luciano’s is a workable alternative. The most dangerous thing likely to happen to a pizza delivery guy in my neighborhood would be the large cow from John’s deli falling off in a windstorm and crushing them.

  • dana January 24, 2007 (3:04 pm)

We would order from them regularly if they delivered further South (Gatewood hill).

  • Jiggers January 24, 2007 (4:34 pm)

    Greetings Jo:
I ordered form Yen Wor and had them deliver to me. One thing I found out is that you need to order rice seperately. I paid a total of $20 includes tip) and no rice. Never again. And the food isn’t that great.

  • Jo January 24, 2007 (4:45 pm)

Thanks, Jiggers. I’ve ordered from Yen Wor a couple of times and found that even something found in most American chinese restaurants like egg foo yung or curry chicken didn’t in any way resemble what I’m used to. And was tasteless. Their fried rice is passable. Kind of. Any other Asian restaurants around here that deliver that you know of?

  • Kelly January 24, 2007 (5:01 pm)

You could try Ho Win. It won’t be the best Chinese food you’ve ever tasted, but it’s not too bad.

  • joe January 24, 2007 (5:31 pm)

we have been weekly (at least) Pagliacci customers for about 15 years, moved to Gatewood Hill about 10 years ago

for a while after we moved we had to ask them to call the w seattle kitchen to see if they would bend the rules and deliver – we’re a few blocks south of Morgan, which is I believe their current south boundary for delivery – but now they don’t even call, they just deliver

  • Lily January 24, 2007 (7:45 pm)

My family used to live in Ballard and we ordered from Pagliacci’s several times per month. I am embarassed at how much $$ we spent there. A few years ago we moved to Puget Ridge and they won’t deliver – less than two miles from the WS delivery kitchen! Yes, we can pick it up but when we get pizza it’s an “Oh God, I am exhausted and I don’t wanna move from this couch” kinda thing. A couple of times I’ve picked up a Portobello Primo but out of shroom season it is so much easier to call someplace else, even if the pie isn’t as good. If Garlic Jim’s delivers to my neighborhood, Pagliacci will lose me as a customer completely.

  • MargL January 24, 2007 (8:42 pm)

Ho Win does deliver but not as far south as Roxbury. Not sure what their delivery area is for sure. The honey walnut shrimp and General’s chicken (no stars) is good – but then I like SWEET not spicy.

  • Jen January 24, 2007 (8:42 pm)

I’d totally order from Pagliacci if they delivered to our neighborhood. We’re not as far south as Westwood, but further east – north of Holden, east of 16th, south of SSCC.

I used to live 2 blocks from Yen Wor, ate there once and vowed “never again.” The only other time I’ve been that sick is after eating at Buca di Beppo.

  • Gina January 24, 2007 (9:35 pm)

I live in Admiral–gave Pagliacci delivery three tries. No longer. Took over 1 1/2 hours for delivery (fastest time). I tried the drop by for a calzone, ordering in. 45 minutes. I have called from work to pickup pizza with a group because ordering from West Seattle would take too long. That was the best timewise, only a 15 minute wait after a hour commute backup.

I now tell company that I do not order pizzas delivered, and stop by the supermarket and pick up the frozen California Pizza Kitchen pies,or the rising crust pizzas and ingredients that are asked for. Including shopping and baking time I still come out ahead.

I miss Godfather’s at the Junction. Cheap pizza, cheap beer and a salad bar.

  • G. Williams January 24, 2007 (10:59 pm)

We gave up ordering from Pagliacci because if we were gonna drive all that way from Highland Park we might as well go to Spiro’s and have some of their yummy Greek salads while we’re at it. We also get Papa Murphy’s in White Center, which isn’t gourmet, but it’ll feed ya, and the service there is always good.

The result is that I went from ordering from Pagliacci so often when I lived on First Hill that I got free pizza a couple of times a year to never ordering from them at all. Nice going, guys.

  • Jo January 28, 2007 (5:19 pm)

I haven’t called an order in yet, and it took two calls to Ho-Win to find out that they delivered to Alki (“yes”) and the menu is at http://ho-win.cwok.com/
Language was a barrier, so have to I’ll see whether they really do deliver here.
Thanks for the tip on Ho-Win, folks.

While we’re at it…I once went to appply for a job at Pagliacci’s. Their website said they were hiring pizza kitchen crew & delivery drivers. I printed out the application and drove down to speak with the manager. The big sign on the window said NOW HIRING! When the manager appeared, he said, “We’re only hiring delivery drivers.”

Please don’t misunderstand. I am happily employed with a large Seattle company, have a Master’s degree, and was simply looking for an evening, part-time gig. The manager was like, “delivery or nothing.”

  • kb January 31, 2007 (9:52 am)

We don’t order from pags anymore either. We’re 2 miles straight down Cali Ave. They wouldn’t even have to make a turn – just drive straight and you’re there. Yet, nope, wont deliver to us. It’s a shame especially since we eat out ALL the time and would spend a ton of money there if they would expand their area.

  • Joe March 2, 2007 (6:24 pm)

I use to live on Alki and never had a problem with Pag’s. Food was always excellent and delivery time was good. I also never have had a problem picking up pizza’s there. All that being said I too think it sucks they don’t deliver further South then they do.

Sorry, comment time is over.
