“Sounds Beyond Barriers” Youth Arts Showcase Features Students from Seattle World School, Garfield High and Grammy Award-Winning Artists!

Members of the band Quetzal, whose latest album Imaginaries just won a Grammy, team up with students from the Seattle World School (formerly SBOC) and Garfield High School to write and perform original songs at a Youth Arts Showcase on Saturday, March 2nd at Youngstown.

The Showcase starts at 6 pm on Saturday, March 2nd at Youngstown’s Thelma Dewitty Theater (4408 Delridge Way SW). This event is free and all ages. Donations gratefully accepted.

The showcase will mark the culmination of a weeklong communal songwriting process inspired by the work of Zapatista artist/activists from Chiapas, Mexico. Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez, who will lead the facilitation, learned the process firsthand at an encuentro (“encounter”) between Zapatistas and Chicano artivistas (“artist-activists”) in 1997. For this project, they will be joined by a diverse team of artists, community activists, and educators. Filmmaker Scott Macklin will document the process and produce a short video in partnership with members of What’s Good 206.

In addition to the premier of new works collectively created by Quetzal and the youth, the Showcase will feature guest artists including Kali Niño from Veracruz, Mexico, MC Gabriel Teodros, UW Visiting Artist Raquel Rivera, youth poet LJ Hughes, spoken word artist YolT Keyz, SWS Somali dancers and members of the Seattle Fandango Project.

The Showcase starts at 6p on Saturday, March 2nd at Youngstown’s Thelma Dewitty Theater (4408 Delridge Way SW). This event is free and all ages. Donations gratefully accepted.

Presented with support from the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Seattle World School, World Family Center, Seattle Fandango Project & Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.
