An event in the Duwamish Revealed Festival:

Duwamish Revealed, a summer long series of outdoor art installations, performances, and community activities presents Revealing Coast Salish Cultures: Journeying by Canoe and Art. This event has been produced in collaboration with Welcome to Our Native Land, (WONL), a Native cultural arts organization based in Seattle. On Saturday, September 12th from 12–6 pm, canoe families from around the region will paddle in for a welcoming landing at Terminal 107 Park and celebration of the Duwamish River’s First Peoples at the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center. Canoes will be welcomed by the Duwamish Tribal Chair Cecile Hansen. Everyone is invited and welcome to join the landing and tribal welcoming!

12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Terminal 107 Park:
Storyteller and artist Paul Che Oke Ten Wagner, Saanich, First Nations, will lead people in creating Coast Salish style dream catchers.

12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Duwamish Longhouse (across W Marginal Way from the park):
A showcase of Native food, art and performance, featuring:

Artist demonstrations and artwork for purchase by Bill James (Lummi / Duwamish), baskets & crafts; Bruce Pierre (Lummi), painter; Kathryn Arquette (Muckleshoot / Duwamish), interdisciplinary arts; John Romero (Eastern Shoshone), painter & regalia creator; Jerry Laktonen (Yupik / Alutiiq), masks, paddles, and glass; Jimmy Price (Port Gamble S’Kallam), paddles, rattles, and carving; Peter Boome (Upper Skagit), paddles & carving, prints, drums, beadwork, and various Native crafts.

On display will be a set of ceremonial canoe paddles commissioned from carvers Peter Boome (Upper Skagit); Michael Haladay (Duwamish); Jimmy Price (Port Gamble S’Kallam); and Rick Williams (Nuu-chah-nulth, Ditidaht Nation of British Columbia).

Coastal kaleidoscope artist Kathryn Arquette (Muckleshoot / Duwamish), has been commissioned to create an interpretative sculpture that celebrates the tradition of paddle carving.

Hand painted silk banners by artist Jose Montano will mark the event location.

Emerging artist Noelani Aure (Nooksak), will show her distinctive style paintings including Mount Rainier, Sasquatch, the Duwamish River, and vividly colored tribal landscapes

3:00 pm: Performance and storytelling by Paul Che oke Ten Wagner and the 7th Generation Youth Coastal Dancers

4:00 pm: Free salmon dinner
