Matador Restaurant and Tequila Bar in West Seattle will partner with two of Seattle’s premier tattoo studios for a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Friday, November 1, 5 pm-11 pm to raise money for Childhaven, a Seattle-based organization that provides therapeutic child care for the youngest victims of abuse and neglect.

Seattle’s Tracy Zumwalt, Curtis James and Jacob McCallum artists from Anchor Tattoo (Ballard) and Ian Duca, Chris Hunter, Joe McChan and Justin McCrow, artists from Alki Beach Tattoo (West Seattle) will donate their time to create Day of the Dead-themed painted longhorn skulls, donated by Matador. Also, Joe Nix, a local Seattle muralist and owner of the Vice Versa Gallery will also be designing one of the longhorn skulls.

Each skull will draw inspiration from the famous lithograph images to Jose Guadalupe Posada, a 19th century Mexican cartoonist whose work is commonly associated with Dia de los Muertos and the brightly-painted “sugar skulls” or calaveras de azúcar, that can be found in shops and market stalls in cities and towns across Mexico leading up to Day of the Dead. To keep with the traditions of the holiday, pan de muerto, a sweet bread traditionally placed at the altars of the dead as an offering or ofrenda, will be served.

A silent auction featuring the artists’ creations will be held at the Ballard and West Seattle Matador locations as part of the restaurant’s Day of the Dead celebration. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to Childhaven, which provides therapy, social interaction, and emotional support to babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to ensure they grow up happy and healthy.

During the auction, Matador will run a Día de Los Muertos-inspired menu with food and drink specials. Photos of any skulls not purchased that day will be uploaded to www.matadorseattle.com and the auction will continue online.
