Participatory Budgeting: Giving Citizens More Control Over Seattle’s Budget
The Delridge Neighborhoods District Council (DNDC) welcomes Councilmember Nick Licata to discuss Participatory Budgeting (PB). In June, Mayor Ed Murray set aside $500,000 in the 2016 budget for the youth (ages 12-24) of Seattle to make funding decisions. Our goal is that the City will ask Delridge youth to be the first ambassadors of this project.
From the Mayor’s press release:
Though each city implements the concept differently, the basic premise is common across the cities: community members brainstorm spending ideas, budget delegates develop proposals based on these ideas, residents vote on proposals, and the government implements the winning projects.
The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) will oversee the program starting with creation of a steering committee to help design, plan, and execute the process.
We are specifically requesting youth organizations, leaders, and aspiring world-changers to attend this meeting on September 16th 7:00 pm at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, to learn how to access these funds, and put your stamp on the future.
