On Wednesday April 22, Earth Day, Wednesday, at 6:30-8:00 pm
Explorer West Middle School (WSB sponsor), will present a community talk by NASA/JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab) Solar System Ambassador, Dr. Ron Hobbs.

Dr. Hobbs’ presentation, entitled “Exploring Strange New Worlds; A Space Exploration Update”, will introduce exciting developments in space exploration. This talk is aimed to inspire upper elementary and middle school students and their families. Admission is free of charge. An RSVP is requested by email at events@explorer-west.org.

In this special Earth Day Explorer presentation, Dr. Hobbs will talk about the new frontiers including the latest discoveries in comets, dwarf planets, and the Mars rover. With the goal of igniting enthusiasm and imagination of the new frontiers that lie in outer space, Dr. Hobbs will also illustrate the ways that the discoveries from these missions will impact our life on earth.

Dr. Ron Hobbs has delivered more than 200 presentations to K-12 classrooms, retirement centers, and professional associations since becoming a Solar System Ambassador for NASA/JPL in 2011. He is currently a naturopathic physician and an instructor for Bellevue College’s TELOS continuing education program. Dr. Hobbs is committed to sharing the wonders of nature from a scientific context. As a lifelong learner, he believes that the wonder of new understanding is a key to a long and fulfilling life. “For kids, and I include myself in that, there’s no distinction between reality and science fiction. Science fiction is just reality before it happens,” he explains. “This is family entertainment as it really should be. That’s the great thing about the Solar Systems Ambassador program. It’s people from the community sharing with their neighbors what our tax dollars get spent on.”

NASA/JPL The Solar System Ambassadors Program is a public outreach program designed to work with motivated volunteers across the nation. These volunteers communicate the excitement of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab space exploration missions and information about recent discoveries to people in their local communities. For 2015, there are 628 bringing the excitement of space to the public. Ambassadors are space enthusiasts from various walks of life who are interested in providing greater service and inspiration to the community at large.

Explorer West is an independent Middle School founded in 1996. It is located in southwest Seattle in the White Center area. Explorer West offers rigorous academics in a small, individualized and supportive environment so that students prosper at the high schools of their choice.
