VIDEO: City Council District 1 (West Seattle/South Park) election results – Shannon Braddock, Lisa Herbold, Phillip Tavel leading

ORIGINAL REPORT, 8:06 PM: The big race of the night for our area is the first-ever primary for Seattle City Council District 1, West Seattle/South Park, with nine candidates in the running. As soon as tonight’s vote count is in (any minute now), you’ll see the results here (and other races here).

FIRST RESULTS, 8:15 PM: The first and only election-night vote count is in: Shannon Braddock is the top vote-getter with 29 percent, Lisa Herbold next with 27 percent, Phillip Tavel third with 19 percent, Brianna Thomas with 11 percent, Chas Redmond with 7 percent. (added – full first-round results for all 9 District 1 candidates)

Braddock – 28.59% – 3096 votes
Herbold – 27.44% – 2972 votes
Tavel – 19.03% – 2061 votes
Thomas – 10.74% – 1163 votes
Redmond – 7.32% – 793 votes
Rushmer – 2.30% – 249 votes
Robles – 1.65% – 179 votes
Wirsing – 1.42% – 154 votes
Goberman – 1.17% – 127 votes

8:38 PM: Just talked to Braddock at her election-night party at Mission in The Admiral District. Asked “what did you do when you saw the vote count?” she replied, “Started breathing again!” We’ll add a short video interview later. (10 pm: Now added:)

Headed south in hopes of catching Lisa Herbold next.

8:51 PM: Just talked with Herbold outside her party location, Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction (she was on the back patio, talking to her brother via phone, when we arrived). She said she was surprised by tonight’s results, not expecting a clear top two. We’ll add our quick video interview once we’re back at HQ. (10 pm: Now added:)

Again, this is just the first round of ballot-counting; next round is around 4:30 pm tomorrow. When the vote-counting is done and results are certified in two weeks, the top two advance to the November general election.

P.S. The county says 12,000 ballots from District 1 had been returned by Election Night – 20 percent of the “active voters” in West Seattle/South Park.

Braddock and Herbold according to the early tally.

    • WSB August 4, 2015 (8:47 pm)

Yes, we published that the second the vote count came out at 8:15 pm, thanks! That’s the only vote count that will be out tonight.

  • Kimmy August 4, 2015 (9:25 pm)

Darn it. Was hoping for someone outside the world of local politics.

  • JoB August 4, 2015 (9:32 pm)

    dang
i may have no choice but to support Herbold :(

  • WS gal August 4, 2015 (9:32 pm)

I am curious the top 5 what they spent in comparison to where the results were?

    • WSB August 4, 2015 (9:40 pm)

In our “Last Look” series we have links to the financial reports for each candidate on each page … I won’t have time to even look at crunching that until maybe tomorrow. And of course there’s the “independent expenditure” matter – which we asked Shannon Braddock about; adding our quick video interviews of her and Lisa Herbold shortly. – TR

  • BB August 4, 2015 (9:49 pm)

I was hoping for someone outside of the local political scene too..disappointed.

  • WS gal August 4, 2015 (9:56 pm)

Now I will have to vote for Shannon! Lisa and Shannon how sad

  • cjboffoli August 4, 2015 (10:17 pm)

Just saw the really subpar voter participation estimates. We finally get a chance to remake the entire City Council and apparently more than 70% of eligible voters in Seattle have chosen not to participate at all in casting a primary vote. Disappointing.

  • wscommuter August 4, 2015 (10:17 pm)

Given how the rest of the city seems to be voting (other far left candidates winning), thank goodness we showed some sense here in choosing serious candidates (kudos to Mr. Tavel, however – wish he could have advanced along with the excellent candidates in Ms. Herbold and Ms. Braddock).

Fun fact – All the candidates of D1 collectively had fewer contributions than Sawant and only slightly more than Banks in D3…. as of current tallies.

      Thanks, Joe!

  • AceMotel August 4, 2015 (10:52 pm)

so, what’s different? It’s still about the money.

  • XXX August 4, 2015 (10:52 pm)

I wouldn’t count Tavel out of this one yet…

  • Voters Don't Vote August 4, 2015 (11:18 pm)

There were 49 names to whittle through. I think that was just too much for people to contemplate for a mid-summer vote.

I hope that the final two inspire a robust conversation about solutions.

I also hope that the our district’s Democrats and Republican party districts work toward establishing a new era of precinct level engagement.

Please, 34th District. Make an effort to be relevant and reach out at school ptas, community council meetings, and grocery stores. Please. Engage the voter base. I looked at the 34th District list of Precinct Officers early last spring, I think it was. There mostly were not any names listed. Perhaps that was an out of date document on line. Perhaps not.

I grew up going to precinct meetings with my dad. The responsibility rotated through most households on our street over the years. Voting day was a day to gather and commune and celebrate voting itself. Please, make District 1 the leader in a street level renewal of registration and engagement. It’s up to organized political parties, I believe. If you do not make an effort to spearhead such an effort, Ms. Herbold or Ms. Braddock, you will be remiss.

    Good luck to both.

‘Voters don’t vote’ you’re just as uninformed as you claim others to be. There were not “49 names to whittle through”. With the new district elections West Seattle/South Park voters had nine candidates to select from for the new district 1, add in the citywide seats: four candidates for position 8, and six for position 9. That’s nineteen candidates for city council to whittle through. Even adding in three candidates for school board position 6, and eleven for two Port commissioner seats doesn’t get you to 49 names.

As for your hope “that the our districtā€™s Democrats and Republican party districts work toward establishing a new era of precinct level engagement.” All of these offices are non-partisan and the Republican party is effectively non-existent for local races at the district level. Both Herbold and Braddock attended multiple community council meetings, Southwest and Delridge district council meetings, and other local venues to engage voters before the primary, and are likely to do the same in the general election.

the end of Lisa’s video got cut off; anyway to fix that?

  • Diane August 5, 2015 (1:48 am)

had great time tonight party hopping at Lisa, Chas, and Phil events all in a row

Re: video – Patrick talked to her (no parking so I stayed in the car in the closest spot we could find to briefly idle on the side street south of the Feedback) and uploaded the video, but I just looked at both his original clip and the YouTube playback, and neither is “cut off” – it ends with her laughing, and runs about :32. – TR

  • Nick August 5, 2015 (6:20 am)

Great job public only 20% of you voted and we wonder why we keep getting elected officials that don’t represent there constituents.

  • trickycoolj August 5, 2015 (6:37 am)

I hope that whoever lands our district focuses on local issues. I’m really tired of issues that are outside of the purview of the City that they are supposed to represent. I don’t want nuclear war either (extreme example) but I would benefit sooner from addressing the crumbling streets on my commute through WS and SP to Boeing Field.

  • Neighbor August 5, 2015 (7:00 am)

Outside money, FTW. Now the expanded urban village boundary around Alaska Junction area-intended to gobble up single family homes and make it easier for developers to grab and redevelop that land-could have support from of 3 District 1 candidates (Braddock and Herbold) whose homes would not be impacted by changes to the urban village concept.

  • M August 5, 2015 (7:11 am)

I love everything about Seattle except the liberal politics.

  • Voters Don't Vote August 5, 2015 (7:28 am)

Public Administrator, nowhere did I state or imply that others are uninformed. But let me clarify for you the 49 voters I referred to are city wide total candidates. I am sorry you weren’t aware of that, but I should have been clearer I suppose. I was one of those who found the city wide candidates fascinating and instructive to follow. Obviously, you did not. No biggie. I do not care one wit. Anyway.

The lack of precinct chairs here in the 34th Democratic District and the opportunities for micro-level involvement is part of the lack of voter turnout, from my point of view. It’s pretty much a no-brainer for me. But, I don’t think that involves any accusations on my part of others being misinformed. Where the heck you conjured that from is beyond me. You overread the comment and projected stuff onto it that was not intended. But, again, I do not care,I simply state so for accuracy’s sake.

Thanks for participating in your democracy as you see it. But I’ll participate in mine as I see it. Thanks for reading and have a swell day.

  • Raincity August 5, 2015 (7:40 am)

Neighbor- I am also concerned about the issues you described and contacted Lisa and Shannon as I was considering both candidates. Only Lisa responded with a good deal of information that made me more comfortable voting for her.

  • Michelle August 5, 2015 (8:10 am)

@Kimmy…I was hoping for an outsider too, someone who is and has acted local for West Seattle.

  • Sue August 5, 2015 (8:43 am)

I was also disappointed in the low turnout so far. I’m sure many people voted last minute (I only mailed mine Monday), but I’m sure that it’ll still be low.

This was a really important election to me, being given the ability to vote for a local voice on the council. Yes, it was a bit overwhelming with so many candidates, but I took the time to go to forums, read up on them, watch videos. It was still hard, but it was important for me to do. This is what frustrates me most about the world today – everyone bitches about government and what they do and don’t do, but so few take the time to actually vote and change what they don’t like and support what they do.

  • AB August 5, 2015 (9:14 am)

Disappointing that the candidates with their teeth already biting into the corruption of local politics have been voted through the primaries, but not surprising considering the money they raised. The people (well, only 20% of them) have decided that they want the status quo to continue by voting for these seasoned political insiders. I guess since the people have chosen, that means there can’t be anymore complaining about light rail never reaching WS, the 35th st unimprovements to increase gridlock, bike infrastructure, new zoning laws to increase density, etc. Get a grip people, politics is politics and money runs the show!

  • onion August 5, 2015 (10:05 am)

Having two final candidates with experience and connections in local government who need less ramp-up time to become effective hardly seems like a negative outcome to me.
As for the impact of money on this particular race, I think this role and impact is over-dramatized by some people. We’ll see.
Moving forward, whether Shannon and Lisa are the finalists–or even if Phillip edges into the top two–I’ll expect the candidates to more clearly explain how their priorities, actions, and results on our behalf will differ from those of their opponent’s priorities, actions, and potential results. And I sincerely hope the candidates and their supporters do that without maligning their opponents.

    • WSB August 5, 2015 (10:23 am)

At least three forums (even with two candidates, they’re never really “debates”) are scheduled so far, so in addition to other ways to find out more about the candidates, stay tuned for those. We’ll also do our best in fall coverage to compare and contrast (and to cover the other races, which we included in a separate story last night). But first come the afternoon results in about six hours, which will be the best indication of whether this is likely to be the final order of primary finish … TR

  • Diane August 5, 2015 (10:59 am)

wsb; can you please post dates/times of those 3 forums, so I can put on my calendar? thanks

    • WSB August 5, 2015 (11:08 am)

I don’t know that any dates/times/places are officially finalized yet. But the West Seattle Transportation Coalition tentatively has one on its calendar (see its website, I think the late September meeting), the League of Women Voters/Westside Interfaith Network collaboration gave us heads-up they’re planning one in early October, and the Seattle Channel also was working on one. Plus of course the 34th District Democrats will be hearing from the candidates. – TR

    thank you
