West Seattle weekend scene: Motorcycles’ memorial procession

(UPDATE: It’s a memorial procession – scroll down)

ORIGINAL REPORT, 12:38 PM: Don’t know yet what exactly this is about, but a major motorcycle ride has just traveled through West Seattle – these photos came in via Twitter, as the ride headed westbound, then northbound, then eastbound:

We’re still researching – if you know the reason/occasion, please clue us all in – thanks!

12:45 PM: Just found it via websearch. Memorial procession – here’s the link with details – in honor of 59-year-old Dennis Costello, who died of leukemia in February. His funeral is in Tacoma later today.

I rode in this with my husband. It was a memorial ride for a member of the South Seattle Bandidos who has passed. The red and gold motorcycle community is very close and supportive of each other. Bikers from all types of clubs came from all over the state

Who pays for the police escort? Do you have to get a permit for something like this?

According to what I’ve found so far, escorts are provided by private services. Such as: http://www.elitemotorescort.com
      .
Two other companies are mentioned here:

We saw them go by on 47th at the north end of Lincoln Park. Quite an impressive show of riders.

Dennis is a much loved and respected member of The Bandidos Motorcycle Club. The type of cancer he had was VERY aggressive. It took 49 days from diagnosis to death, even with VERY aggressive chemotherapy it took this once strong and healthy man down very quickly. Bandido Dennis 1%’er GBNF will be missed by all who knew and loved him. There were approximately 400 bikes with private escort as well as SPD blocking intersections for us and yes, you need permits for this as it is a criminal offense to block traffic. Dennis will ride on in The Forever Chapter, where we will ride side by side again someday…….. Ride free My Brother B.F.F.B
