Update: Luna Park coffee shop The Shack hit, damaged

11:27 AM: Nobody hurt, but some damage at The Shack coffee shop in Luna Park, after a car crashed into the building this past hour. We’re heading over to find out more. Thanks to Eleanor for tweeting photos.

11:53 AM: Just back from The Shack. Owner tells us they’re still open for business – the damage wasn’t that serious – and also shared another photo from right after the crash, added above (note the T-shirt). Someone is already on the way to board up the damaged window.

12:17 PM: And their sense of humor was certainly left undamaged:

Where do I get a shirt like that?

    • WSB January 25, 2015 (12:19 pm)

I believe the Shack is selling them – 2920 SW Admiral AVALON Way, and as we noted, they’re still open, stop on by!

YIKES! Good thing weather is nice for today and tomorrow.

Glad nobody was hurt, and just a relatively minor owie for the building.

    .

I didn’t realize, or perhaps just don’t recall, that Java Bean had formally changed their name to “The Shack”.

the shirts are also at the mailing center @ California and Lander – $15

Interesting. Police memorial license plate. Or, I think that’s just a car from later…

  • David January 25, 2015 (1:12 pm)

The shack is at 2920 SW Avalon Way. Not on Admiral!

I know that (ergo the Luna Park reference), brain confused the two. Fixing!

Ooooohhh. Now they can replace with windows identical to the front one – which I love.

  • Dave January 25, 2015 (3:56 pm)

Yes, this is the same location as the former Java Bean, but under new ownership and management. And better coffee!

how do so many people drive into buildings?

    • WSB January 25, 2015 (5:02 pm)

The parking there is right up against the building. Often it’s a case of somebody hitting the gas when they meant to hit the brake.

  • B January 25, 2015 (5:02 pm)

That’s not the easiest spot to run into..my guess is maybe someone had it in drive and not reverse like they were expecting..

    Glad everyone’s ok!

Brizone, based on the bumper being a bit dinged and there being hardly any distance between the LEM plated car and the indented facade, I think that is a picture the shop has of the actual accident/offending car.

Glad nobody was hurt, not even the spirits of the sign-makers.

This is a horrible thing to happen, and so glad nobody was hurt. But doesn’t anyone else chuckle just a little about the sign in the 3rd photo … “new drive thru window” :) oh my.

Perhaps the license plate number was not meant to revealed? I remember past accident scenes where the license was blurred.

  • Wsrez January 25, 2015 (10:26 pm)

    Someone really needed that coffee!

  • Don Brubeck January 26, 2015 (8:21 am)

Maybe this is why they give a discount to customers who arrive by bicycle. :-D

“A car” crashed into the building? Was it a self-driving car, or did a PERSON crash the car into the building?

  • WSB January 26, 2015 (6:18 pm)

Merlin, your criticism is better spent on somebody who doesn’t get what you’re saying. We have been corrected previously and therefore this is one of the few places you’ll USUALLY find “driver” rather than “car” in accounts of collisions. In this case, on Sunday morning, I published this hastily and failed to live up to that. Please forgive me. – TR
