West Seattle restaurants: Mioposto coming to Admiral in ex-Admiralty House Antiques building

West Seattle is getting more pizza. Eater elaborates this morning on what the business-license database also revealed for the future-restaurant half of 2141 California SW, formerly Admiralty House Antiques – this spring, it’ll become the third location of Mioposto, after Mount Baker and Bryant. The concept, according to Mioposto’s website, is wood-fired pizza and small plates (here’s the online menu). We reported last summer that the building was being split into two spaces, with Prospect Mortgage on the south side and “an experienced restaurant operator” sought to lease the north side. That certainly defines Mioposto’s proprietor, Jeremy Hardy, whose company Seattle Eats also owns Coastal Kitchen on Capitol Hill. (WSB file photo from July 2014)

P.S. Residential construction is proceeding on what had been the vacant area west of the antiques-turned-mortgage-and-restaurant building, where a 3-unit rowhouse is planned.

Another wood-fired pizza place? Seems like that is covered with Pizzeria 22 almost across the street and Pizzeria Credo in the Junction. Unless I am missing how they are different from those two, they better be good or there is eventually going to be another empty storefront. As a fan of Pizzeria 22 it is going to be difficult for them to win me over (except maybe for breakfast)…

  • pizza man January 23, 2015 (10:09 am)

I guess we are about to find out how much demand there is in north admiral for high quality pies. The popular Pizzaria 22 is only one block away. Looking forward to the small plates on offer here, and the patio, hopefully in a sunnier side of the building than 22’s.

  • Heylady January 23, 2015 (10:25 am)

    Love Mioposto!

  • Monkey January 23, 2015 (10:30 am)

Enough with the pizza already! UGH! Can we please have a decent Mexican restaurant for starters. How about some delivery service that isn’t pizza or bad Chinese food. That is good news for West Seattle, not another pizza place.

  • bsmomma January 23, 2015 (10:39 am)

    I second the Mexican Food!

  • birdgeek January 23, 2015 (10:52 am)

For those Jonesing for Mexican food in Admiral: have you tried Mission? They have seriously excellent Mexican food. (???) It’s one of our go-to joints when we want Mexi (the other being Cactus). Oh, and now Pecado Bueno in the Junction! Okay, I’m getting carried away… and now I want Mexican food. Mmmmmmexican… :\

  • dfresh January 23, 2015 (10:56 am)

I second delivery service! Seriously, pizza, thai & chinese, that’s all there is. How about a GOOD pho place?

    Too much pizza here!

  • west seattle taxpayer January 23, 2015 (11:02 am)

uggh…how ’bout a family friendly restaurant that is NOT pizza…

Circa is the only thing going in WS that is even remotely family friendly its always good, always busy but the menu Never changes.

Copper coin is mediocre at best with spotty service and quality.

Angelina’s is not very good and overpriced to boot.

I don’t miss the terrible “beauty” but at least they could handle a family (the food sucked)

Elliot Bay food & service quality is unbearable, but slightly better than their beer.

    and yeah…the Mexican is a trainwreck…

West City kitchen needs another try – first time thru – good quality, no kids menu, small portions – big price.

So, the run down for West Seattle Fam-friendly Dining is Pizza Pizza Pizza Thai Thai Pizza Pizza Circa End-O-Line Joes…or breakfast…

I’m hoping all those high rises will spawn some actual restaurants…hell I’d take a Chili’s!

  • MattMatt January 23, 2015 (11:07 am)

There sure are a bunch of whiners on here this morning. If you don’t want a pizza place going in, vote with your wallet and don’t eat there. Obviously someone feels there is enough demand for another pizza spot.

  • Brian January 23, 2015 (11:11 am)

You guys care a lot about restaurants you’re never going to patronize anyway.

  • rcl January 23, 2015 (11:23 am)

    El Pollo Loco!

    • WSB January 23, 2015 (11:24 am)

RCL, I’m with you on that one. And In N Out Burger and … But this particular location wasn’t likely to go fast-food.

  • flimflam January 23, 2015 (11:35 am)

    agree with MattMatt…

    .
so disheartening that nearly ANY new food option opening is immediately met with groans of displeasure for the usual reasons – not kid friendly, not the exact sort of food “I” wanted, there is too much of XXX here already. jeez.

    .
opening and running a restaurant is a difficult and risky venture, that said, all the whiners should put their money where their mouth is and go on ahead and open the spot they’d like to see.

    .
good luck to this new business. end rant.

  • Twobottles January 23, 2015 (11:45 am)

As I’ve said before, the marketplace is self-correcting. If this ends up being one too many pizza places, one or more will eventually fail.

I live just a few blocks away, love pizzeria 22, but will definitely give this place a shot. Welcome to the neighborhood and good luck.

  • fargus January 23, 2015 (12:05 pm)

So glad it’s not another coffee place. Never read about anyone complaining of that.

  • Wes C. Addle January 23, 2015 (12:10 pm)

    @birdgeek
    .
Mission is good, however it’s terribly overpriced and you don’t get chips and salsa for free. Also if you do order chips and salsa it’s super tiny and $5-6 if I remember. I can only stomach that place during happy hour. They make the best tasting Mexican food in West Seattle, but I’d rather not spend $50-$60 to eat there for 2 drinks and 2 plates when I could spend half that elsewhere.

  • Jack January 23, 2015 (12:13 pm)

Ha! My first reaction was also “another pizza place…really?” though was not going to whine about it. HOWEVER, I went and looked at their menu and it looks fantastic. Breakfast, tons of small plates, salads. Will definitely check it out.

Knowing this is the 3rd venture is always promising as well.

  • Lisa Marie @Shanti Salon January 23, 2015 (12:27 pm)

Well I am excited for anything to be here!! We at Shanti want some action besides us at the end of the row!!! I hope they have a bar ;))

  • currymouth January 23, 2015 (12:28 pm)

@birdgeek – Mission? Really? And Cactus?
I’m afraid you don’t know real (good) Mexican food.

  • datamuse January 23, 2015 (12:47 pm)

While I can’t get *too* excited about yet more pizza, I’m intrigued by the prospect of small plates.
    .
As for Mexican, the good places are in White Center. We’ve got all the good pho, too.

  • Mickymse January 23, 2015 (12:47 pm)

Mission and Cactus are just fine places to eat… but they’re definitely NOT “good Mexican.” And while I really like Pecado Bueno, that’s catering to a fairly specific style of Mexican food.
    .
Where does everyone east when they fly to Mexico during the winter? Certainly no one thinks Seattle’s Mexican restaurants taste as good as what you eat down there. Are folks only going to the all-inclusive resorts?

  • CJP January 23, 2015 (1:09 pm)

You want mexican? Come down to La Fondita. Best Carnitas west of the Duwamish.

You want good pho? Venture to Roxbury, and you’ll have some of the best in seattle. Pho 88 on 17th, Pho 99 down by Zippy’s has one of the biggest pho menus around, and is open 7 days a week. Not that many places you can get a quail egg in your pho. :) You really don’t need to venture beyond those two, but if you want variety- hit Pho Aroma on Delridge (noodle bowls, crepes, etc) and Pho My Loi on 16th. Everyone of these is better than Than Brothers.

Go to where the brown people live if you want brown people food, cause the junction ain’t got it. ;)

    http://www.soronoropho.net!

edit- actually pho mai loy is about the same as Than Brothers (aside from not having Pho Tai Chin, which is a drag) , but they have a non-pho menu as well, which is a plus.

  • OP January 23, 2015 (1:22 pm)

Note to self: Open a store that sells Crestor, Zetia and Lipitor for all pizza cheese flowing through West Seattle.

  • sc January 23, 2015 (1:26 pm)

Good family friendly restaurant is Azuma!

  • Marge Evans January 23, 2015 (1:42 pm)

you have got to be kidding me! how much pizza can people eat?

  • IHeartMioposto's January 23, 2015 (1:48 pm)

Mioposto’s is hands down the best wood fired pizza in the city!!! They also have other amazing foods, appetizers, great staff, and from the sound of it plenty of room for their patrons to maneuver through the dining room.
Give them a try and you’ll be thankful that they are here.
    Welcome Mioposto’s!!

  • wscommuter January 23, 2015 (1:53 pm)

Love Mioposto as well … delighted they are coming to W. Sea. For those who haven’t tried, they are on par (perhaps better) than Phoenicia (another fave). Definitely above Pizzeria 22 and way above Pizzeria Credo. Love that this building will have a charming sit-down place to go eat excellent food.

  • Molly January 23, 2015 (1:55 pm)

Who cares? I’m just delighted they haven’t razed that cool old building!

  • JAK January 23, 2015 (1:57 pm)

I’ll give it a try although with some trepidation. I used to go frequently to Coastal Kitchen but rarely go there now — post Jeremy Hardy taking over, putting in a trendy oyster bar, raising prices and losing a certain friendly ambiance. From what I can tell, none of the wait staff (that all knew me by name) are there anymore. All that to say, I’ll still check ’em out and wish them well.

  • Dan January 23, 2015 (2:11 pm)

I completely agree with some of the naysayers — Pizzeria 22 is plenty good enough! As it stands, we don’t get to go there until serious cravings develop. But we never regret it. They know us, we know them. That’s not to say Mioposto is a bad thing.

  • Jen January 23, 2015 (2:26 pm)

I love both Mioposto and Pizzeria 22, and will probably take turns visiting the two. I’ll be curious, though, to see if the area can support both of them.

  • w.s.maverick January 23, 2015 (2:33 pm)

    i love that building

  • Ssf January 23, 2015 (2:36 pm)

Seriously, more pizza? I’m sure we will try them but there is already a ton of pizza in west sesttle. I agree something family friendly that isn’t pizza and delivers.

  • zark00 January 23, 2015 (2:42 pm)

Me: See’s bandwagon driving by – jumps on it!

I agree – we don’t need more pizza – nobody mentioned Zaw though – the artisan take and bake place on Faunt right at the top of the bridge – it’s really good and the folks that run it are beyond friendly/cool. It’s also right by Dr. Bond’s, who is seriously an amazing dentist.

  • G January 23, 2015 (2:45 pm)

In N Out. God, I miss that place.

  • Diane January 23, 2015 (2:52 pm)

much rather have pizza than another burger joint; welcome to the Admiral neighborhood

  • Diane January 23, 2015 (2:56 pm)

I grew up just north of Mexican border, with “real Mexican food” on every corner, so can’t recall even trying any here
    ~
my favorite is any type of Asian; wish we had all flavors of Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, etc on every corner

  • Junta January 23, 2015 (3:49 pm)

    Love it!

Can’t wait for the small tapas! Glad to see that space finally being utilized!

  • Moni Sunshine January 23, 2015 (3:56 pm)

I am so offended that the news of a new restaurant opening gives so many people a platform to criticize all of the other hard working restauranteurs in our community. These people work hard, have probably given all of their life’s earnings to serve the community and likely draw a very small salaries from their passion & profession. And for what? To be bashed from people hiding behind their computers. I wish all of the yummy restaurants in our community much luck. More good businesses bring more business. Many of you need to learn – if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

  • JanS January 23, 2015 (3:57 pm)

have some of you b*tching about another pizza place looked at the menu for the other two places they operate? It looks delish, and isn’t just pizza. And where does it say it won’t be family friendly? I don’t think I saw a “21 and over” sign. And.. they have “bambino” plates. Their other two locations get good reviews…I am happy to see them join the Admiral District :)

  • miws January 23, 2015 (3:58 pm)

Who cares? I’m just delighted they haven’t razed that cool old building!

    .

Best comment so far, on this thread… :-)

  • Nw mama January 23, 2015 (4:09 pm)

Blah. Give us something more original- like coastal kitchen!

  • JanS January 23, 2015 (4:10 pm)

    Mike, that’s very true…it could have been 3 townhouses… :-\

    • WSB January 23, 2015 (4:25 pm)

J & M – at one point there was a proposal to just raze the brick building too and put in a mixed-use building on the whole site.

  • ONION January 23, 2015 (4:14 pm)

My only complaint is that I need to eat less pizza, not more!
My hope is that they have single servings, especially at lunch. My fave by-the-slice place right now is Quadrato, and they are awesome. But parking can be iffy, so the new place would definitely make it on my mid-day list if they serve slices.
What we really need in Admiral is a replacement for the Indian restaurant that went out of business, as well as a quality Chinese option in place of Yon Wor. Until that happens, I pick up takeout from the I-District, especially after I have meetings on the East side of the lake.

  • Amie January 23, 2015 (4:35 pm)

    I am excited!
    Amie from Prospect Mortgage

  • D Del Rio January 23, 2015 (4:49 pm)

If you want to get good Mexican food you have to go to neighborhoods that have a predominantly Mexican immigrant population. Seattle doesn’t have any. If you are east of the mountains you can find plenty of good Mexican food.

  • kravitz January 23, 2015 (4:51 pm)

Anything that’s owned/operated by Jeremy Hardy ought to be a winner. I wish he’s bring back Beeliner Diner in this location (Eat it and Beat it!), complete with blue plate specials and fantastic desserts, apple crisp and butterscotch pudding. I’m a huge fan of Jeremy, but am also completely loyal to Pizzeria 22 and am convinced I’ve had no better pizza…ever. Ought to be a good showdown!

  • Roxy January 23, 2015 (5:19 pm)

Tacos Guaymas in the Juction and in White Center on Roxbury. Yummmy

Welcome to WS Mioposto! I feel that anytime a restaurant chooses to recognize West Seattle as a place they want to be it only opens the door for others to start wanting to move in as well. This business is hard and takes a lot of heart to decide to put it all out there for the world to judge. When it was first announce that we were going to open, we took a small beating in the comments section but we believed in what we were doing and the product we were making. Now I have 11 West Seattleites that work with me and we are building a great little community destination for people to hang out. We should be viewing this as another positive for our community. This is a cool old building that is not being taken down. It is a new business that will create jobs for the folks of WS. It creates another place for community to gather and interact with each other. Good luck, 22 is a darn good wood-fired pie so you will need to bring your “A” game to compete.

  • Another neighbor January 23, 2015 (5:21 pm)

I love Mioposto in Mount Baker-beautiful space, lovely laid back vibe. I will definitely be patronizing this restaurant. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  • Jen January 23, 2015 (5:27 pm)

Re: family friendliness, if the North Admiral location of Mioposto ends up being anything at all like the Mt. Baker outpost, kids will very much be welcomed.

  • thehungryK January 23, 2015 (5:28 pm)

they can show pizzaria 22 how it’s done…..

  • wseakell January 23, 2015 (5:47 pm)

Seems like the people automatically bashing “another pizza place” didn’t look at the menu. It looks delish and has much more than pizza! And hello, breakfast pizzas … say what!? I’m super excited to try this with friends and family for breakfast, lunch and dinner. :-) Welcome to West Seattle!!

  • Noodle January 23, 2015 (5:53 pm)

I would rather have another pizza joint than an empty space. Good luck to Mioposto.

  • Neighbor January 23, 2015 (6:39 pm)

The question is can this neighborhood really support 2 similar restaurants? Seems like we have unique places that can’t even make it, let alone 2 places a block or so away that both sell neapolitan-style pizza (among other things). Even if you are a true free market capitalist you would feel that was a bold move from an investment prospective. Putting the capitalist part aside, isn’t it kind of a jerky thing to do to open so close to a similar place that hasn’t been open that long in its own right and just expanded? My wife and I will try it, but it makes me feel bad to think that if this place is better than 22 we might eat there more frequently and if enough people feel that way then the place will close. Right now 22 is there and doing a good job, do we really need to turn this place into a restaurant version of Thunderdome?

  • steve January 23, 2015 (8:31 pm)

I looked at the menu, and it looks very yummy. I would hardly call it a “pizza” joint, there’s much more than that. Can’t wait.

  • Just another westseattleite January 23, 2015 (11:28 pm)

For the West Side: Best pizza = Slices. Best burger = Zippys. Best pho = Pho Aroma. Best sushi = Mashiko. Best margarita = Mission. Best chinese = Lees Asian. Best thai = Buddha Ruksa. Best steak = Jaks. Best coffee = cupcake royale. Best bakery = Bakery Nouveau. Best fish & chips = Spud. Best breakfast = Fiddlehead. Best beer selection = Beer Junction. Best mexican = taco truck across from Home Depot. Just another opinion. :)

  • MellyMel January 23, 2015 (11:43 pm)

So glad the cool building is being put to nice local use :)

Mioposto is very cute and yummy in Mt. Baker so exciting to have them here. Best wishes to them.

I am in mourning over Firefly so if they decided to make crepes, they can have my weekend breakfast biz.

  • Ray West January 24, 2015 (5:06 am)

I was real excited until I saw the word “Pizza.” That’s when I stopped reading. Pizza + Thai + Burgers + Mexican = West Seattle. That just about sums it up. Same old, same old. Hopefully they really are more than just a pizza place. Good luck to them.

  • Ray West January 24, 2015 (5:20 am)

I too, am glad the building has been saved. If this place does not last, it at least leaves a redone space that other eateries would likely want to utilize rather than an empty shell that developers will want to swoop in and demolish so they can build yet another hideous high-rise condo. For that, I am grateful.

  • Ray West January 24, 2015 (6:13 am)

I’ve been reading through the comments a little more closely, and I have to take umbrage at those complaining about the “whiners.” If people are able to express what it is they want or don’t want, and if potential restaurant owners would take the time to read that, then they might have more success, rather than going in without knowing who and what their customer base will be. Too often you have “newbie entrepreneurs” sinking everything they’ve got into a new business (their life-long dream) or established restaurant owners looking to expand what they’ve already done to a new area, but they have not bothered doing any or enough market research. So keep the comments coming folks about what you want to see in West Seattle, and I suggest those planning to open a restaurant here, carefully listen to what is being said.

  • M January 24, 2015 (8:16 am)

I look forward to their arrival. Pizza 22 has great pizza but indoor seating isn’t the best. Feels cramped. And people like booths. Pizza Credo’s food just isn’t good enough. Moving here from Queen Anne I still REALLY miss Via Tribunali. Their pizza and atmosphere is still way better than our WS options.

  • rdf January 24, 2015 (9:36 am)

It does seem like there is plenty of pizza around here but a lot of people want different types of pizza and if they can make a go at it then more power to them. Like another commenter said. If there are truly enough pizza places they’ll go under and maybe try something different next time. Running a restaurant is a tough business so I wish them good luck.

  • wseakell January 24, 2015 (10:56 am)

Seems like the people automatically bashing “another pizza place” didn’t look at the menu. It looks delish and has much more than pizza! And hello – breakfast pizzas … say what!? Wish they were open this morning! I’m super excited to try this with friends and family for breakfast, lunch and dinner. :-) Welcome to West Seattle!!

  • Jenny January 24, 2015 (11:14 am)

Welcome Mioposto! So excited for yet another great restaurant concept to join the West Seattle scene. I would hope that all the commenters at least checked out their website and menu prior to voicing their negative views about yet another pizza place in West Seattle. Mioposto looks like it is soooo much more. They have breakfast, gourmet pizza (I have never had lamb on a pizza or clams), their pastas sound delicious, great salad selection, panninis, calazones, some great looking appetizers. This place is so much more than just pizza. If they offer the same style of menu at this location that they do at their others and do it right, they will be very successful. Good luck to you Mioposto! Can’t wait to dine with you! Thank you for coming to the West Side.

  • Monkey January 24, 2015 (11:16 am)

Really JanS? We’re bitching because we’re not excited about another pizza joint. I’m sure they serve pasta & salad. So do the other 5 pizza joints in the area. Doesn’t make it any better. The simple fact is that we have crap choices for delivery in West Seattle. Hoping for something different is not bitching. It’s honest. We need better selections on this side of the bridge, not more pizza. Just like we don’t need another sports bar on the beach.

  • dude January 24, 2015 (11:35 am)

this thread is pretty funny. people complaining about people complaining about people complaining.

  • Monkey January 24, 2015 (11:45 am)

One last comment. After reading all the comments I went & read the menu. I still don’t see how this is so much more than a pizza place. It is just that. Pizza, pasta, salad, calzone and so on. How is this exciting? Are they going to deliver? What makes them so much more than another pizza joint? I’m looking at the menu and I just don’t see any difference?

  • Ray West January 24, 2015 (12:54 pm)

I second that, Monkey. I also looked at the menu, and despite a few “different” types of pizza, it looked pretty much run-of-the-mill to me.

  • mr. the horse January 24, 2015 (1:28 pm)

the west seattle food scene aspires to mediocrity. if this joint can raise the bar even a little bit it will be a good thing.

  • winchester January 24, 2015 (2:26 pm)

I wouldn’t mind a shiitake, eggplant parmesan pizza lathered in pesto and homemande marinara garnished with kalamata olives and bellpeppers on a beach of sour dough cheese crust made with beer-batter covered in a sea of three kinds of cheese right about now.

  • onion January 24, 2015 (2:33 pm)

I have to take serious issue with Mr. the Horse. There are quite a few excellent choices in West Seattle for various cuisines at different price points and levels of ambiance. So what if the food trendies turn up their noses at Blackboard or Phoenecia or any of a number of other places in West Seattle, including Pizzeria 22. Ma Ono and its predecessor, SpringHill, are on the trendy and hot lists, but I can take or leave the trendy vibe. In fact, I wouldn’t even put Ma Ono on my West Seattle top ten.

  • Hungrymama January 24, 2015 (7:13 pm)

REALLY excited about Mioposto coming to West Seattle. We always look forward to going to watch the Blue Angles cause it means a stop at Mioposto. The “Con la Patata” pizza is great and as an example I don’t know if I’ve seen any similar options in WS. Anyway, we have room for more pizza. and will keep going to our other favorite pizza places…. Proletariat, Talaricos, Slices.
(Pizzaria 22 is good, but always feel cramped like others have mentioned (and hot).)

  • Jeremy Hardy January 26, 2015 (5:46 pm)

Wow, that’s a lot of comments! I love that building too. It is indeed rare to find such a sweet spot in a great location.

We are excited to join the North Admiral neighborhood. I totally get your comments about yet another pizzeria especially with Pizzeria 22 nearby. Of course, we do see our selves a bit differently. Serving brasaola, roasted hood canal clams and a delicious rib-eye steak are only a few of the different offerings that we will bring.

As a family friendly restaurant we will be open from 4pm to 10pm and 11 on Friday/Saturday nights with a full service bar. And a TV for Hawks and Mariners games…As far as lunch or earlier, we will check in with you all to see what you’re looking for-however, the breakfast pizza will be available all night long.

We will work our tails off to earn your trust and look forward to meeting you.

  • Iheartmioposto January 26, 2015 (6:31 pm)

@Jeremy Hardy – thanks for posting right along with us!! People love to blow off steam here on the Blog. I think that one bite of any of your amazing eats and the deal will be sealed!!
Welcome to West Seattle home of the abnoxiously opinionated yet truly loyal patrons.

  • John Noonan January 26, 2015 (11:39 pm)

Welcome to the neighborhood Mioposto! Hurray for small businesses and more eating options.

  • Wes C. Addle January 27, 2015 (12:55 pm)

I’m happy that Mioposto is coming. Living in that neighborhood there really aren’t as many good options as one would think. It’s actually kind of run down. Especially since the Brickyard is run down just like the Royal India. The Cask is closed. Benbow room just never seems busy. Really all that’s left is Copper Coin, Mission, Pizzeria 22, Pailin Thai, & Circa.
    .
Plus we have all types of food on California ave. There’s Indian, brewpubs, seafood, burgers, pizza, Thai, Greek, Mediterranean, Italian, German, Gastropubs, Delis, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian, Fast Food.
    .
I don’t get understand the hate?

  • drb January 28, 2015 (1:59 pm)

Have you had breakfast at Mioposto? OMG they have the best breakfast pizza ever. All of you grumpy people will change your tune when you try their food! This is fantastic!

I majored in geography and in a business geography course, we looked at how certain businesses often opened close to other successful competitors because they know there is already a built-in customer base. For example Seattle’s Best Coffee (before being bought out) opened up across the street from a Starbucks. That seems to be what is happening in West Seattle. If one Thai restaurant is making a go, then someone else opens one, or a sports bar, a nail salon, and so on. It’s a very typical marketing scheme that, overall, kills variety and does not necessarily serve the customers well.
