West Seattle Crime Watch: Another gunfire investigation tonight

8:34 PM: For the second night in a row, police are investigating reported gunfire in North Delridge. This time, according to an SPD tweet a few minutes ago, it’s reported near 23rd and Juneau (map), which would be near the north side of the Boren campus, which will be housing two schools, K-5 STEM and Arbor Heights Elementary, as of next month. As in last night’s case – around the same time of night, near Delridge/Brandon – so far, no injuries reported.

8:53 PM UPDATE: A woman who says she saw it happen told our crew the shots were fired from a red car heading north on 23rd just north of Juneau, and were aimed at four young men walking on the street. Again, no injuries reported.

They’re looking at bullet holes in at least two parked cars, one of which has a flat tire (photo above); police won’t say how many shots they think were fired, but the witness thinks it was at least 10.

I just hard a bunch of gun shots at the intersection of SW Morgan St and 35th Ave SW. Sounded close, but off in the distance.. NOT COOL!!!!

Think we heard the same thing and so far I think it’s fireworks. No new gunfire reports on the scanner, but we’re keeping watch …

  • Sage K. August 18, 2014 (9:22 pm)

The shots happened in such rapid succession that they sounded like fireworks at first.

  • ~HockeyWitch~ August 18, 2014 (9:33 pm)

I heard them and ran to the kitchen and got behind the counter.. semi-rapid succession.. Bam Bam Bambambam bam..Didn’t know where they were coming from or how close they were, but I wasn’t taking a chance… hope they are caught and that no one was hit…

Retaliation for last nights shots? This is getting old really quick. I wasn’t too far from this area at the time and idiots who indiscriminately take shots in a city really pisses me off.

omg; kiro7 tv news at 11 just covered this, and called the school “Arbor Heights Elementary”; how hard is it for tv news people to get this stuff correct?

    • WSB August 18, 2014 (11:07 pm)

well, it will be Arbor Heights Elementary as well as K-5 STEM for the next two years. They probably just looked at the sign on Delridge, which has said AHE across the bottom for a couple months.

And the “Summer of Safety” rolls on….
    .
Dear Mayor Murray, please don’t declare an “Autumn of Safety.” I’d like the gunfire to end soon.
    .
P.S. And we can expect the new police chief’s safety plan for West Seattle when, exactly?

I cant wait til rainy season sets in

  • alki Resident August 19, 2014 (7:20 am)

@Diane- It IS Arbor Heights Elementary.

  • Bonnie August 19, 2014 (7:37 am)

Looking at that map it happened directly behind where my daughter will be in portables at Boren.

  • Bonnie August 19, 2014 (8:04 am)

Oh, also regarding the sign: A friend of mine thought the school was called Arbor Heights K-5 Stem by the sign. People are confused.

This is exactly what happens when a police agency is truncated from doing its job while being babysat by the Federal government-because its not hugging and consoling criminals. The result is the inmates will run the asylum.

It’s so scary to think that stray bullet could hit an innocent. Especially the way many of these kids hold their fire arm when shooting (sideways to look “gangsta”). I really hope this stops, otherwise I’m signaling Phoenix Jones and the gang.

  • Bradley August 19, 2014 (11:11 am)

@WTF: Amen! We are all in jeopardy due to the DOJ fiasco.

  • B August 19, 2014 (11:28 am)

WTF, please enlighten us how the SPD has been truncated from doing its job.

I see a theme here with posters complaining about SPD being stopped from doing their job, and I’m wondering if the posters are trying to gin up support for their lawsuit.

  • PSPS August 19, 2014 (6:10 pm)

B, you’ll see comments such as those in almost every comment thread everywhere on the Internet, not just WSB, when the story being commented on might relate to race. The thinking goes something like this: If only the police could continue its brutalizing of minorities who, of course, are responsible for everything bad in society, none of this would be happening. Leave it to an administration with “one of them” to muck things up.

  • WSB August 19, 2014 (6:14 pm)

PSPS, we don’t allow overt racism or sexism in comments, to the best of my ability to moderate them. So please don’t lump us in with the disgusting most of the rest of the Internet, where even large companies don’t seem to care about comments (somebody take a look at MyNorthwest.com re: the girl protesting in a Bainbridge tree, but I digress). I’m not seeing what you are referring to here. – TR

  • Bradley August 19, 2014 (7:20 pm)

@B: It is common knowledge that the SPD has been “de-policing” the city due to the DOJ investigation. All of the local news agencies and the Seattle Times reported several months ago (May 14th, 2014) that arrests for moderate-level crimes were down a very large percentage (I won’t quote any numbers since I’m taking a quick break from wrestling with a stalled lawn mower). This was such a problem that, recently, the SPD had to appoint a new area commander to prevent the officers from avoiding apprehending low-to-moderate level crime suspects. You can look this up yourself. The DOJ action has had unintended consequences that are putting all of us at risk.

  • Alphonse August 19, 2014 (9:48 pm)

I don’t know that the comments on MyNorthwest.com is a valid example. I believe that to comment on that site you have to provide proof that your IQ is less than 100 and that you watch no less than 14 hours of Fox News each day.

  • B August 20, 2014 (6:33 pm)

The comments blaming or somehow holding spd responsible for this and other crime in the area is simplistic and inaccurate (and I’m not a big spd supporter lately).

  • Mel August 23, 2014 (3:45 pm)

LOL at the conspiracy theorists blaming the government for this. (Of course, some of those comments are so ramshackle as to not make sense in English – “you can look it up yourself” if you can figure out what “it” is.)
    .
Some folks need to stop immersing themselves in talk radio and fake “news” networks.

Sorry, comment time is over.
