Police-activity updates: Guardian One over High Point; SPD on Alki

7:03 PM: Just in case you see the law-enforcement helicopter overhead: The King County Sheriff’s Office has been over High Point for a bit assisting with a search – but the person that was being sought has been found. So, according to the scanner, the helicopter might be Alki-bound, where, in an unrelated incident, we’ve heard about a guns-drawn stop in the 1700 block and are trying to get details on that. Thanks for all the tips and texts – 206-293-6302 any time!

7:08 PM UPDATE: The High Point search that’s now over was for a missing child, Guardian One has tweeted. Still trying to get info on the Alki situation. Thanks to Mike and Steve for photos and to @ohwellmaybenot for tweeting this one:

ADDED 12:38 AM: We finally have been able to get a bit of information about the nature of the Alki response, thanks to Southwest Precinct Lt. Paul Leung. He didn’t have access to the full report, handled by an earlier watch – we will see if we can track that down later this morning – but it was a “gun call” (no shots fired that we know of).

While the officers did stop the vehicle that was reported to them, they did not find the gun that had been the subject of the original complaint.

It’s that time of year. Let’s pull up the drawbridges….

I was down on Alki at 11:30 this morning and there were cars cruising already. It’s such a shame that it happens every year.

Still haven’t gotten a line on exactly what happened – it was all clear by the time we got down there, and Tweets by Beat has several calls that it could have been. No injuries involved, whatever it was; we’ll be able to find out tomorrow if we don’t rustle up details before tonight ends.

When the sun is out the thugs come out. I agree with Mark about the drawbridges…

Gang bangers (and wanna bes) love the heat. They come out guns a blazin’ every year. Seattle seems to want to pretend we don’t have a problem tho.

Hey Mike: Post your vid to Youtube or somewhere and then post a link here. Curious what the shenanigans look like this year.

We were walking by shortly after whatever happened, happened. 2 SPD cars and 1 SPD SUV. There were two female suspects handcuffed in the back of separate SPD cars. One suspect was laughing with Officers despite being cuffed. Didn’t ask any questions, just continued our walk down Alki.

wow…the first really warm spring day…a Wednesday even…and the crazies crawl out of the woodwork. Alki is not the OK Corral…this really saddens me. Why can’t peeps just go and have a good time?

This happens every sunny day on Alki. I’ll take a video of people bouncing their cars up-and-down, up-and-down Alki, stereos shaking our windows, and motorcycle gangs doing 100mph (some of the riders stand on their seats). What doesn’t happen every sunny day is an increased police presence, so it was nice to see that today.

I am very sorry to say that the police presence was extremely short lived! We went down to Alki to enjoy a beautiful evening, skating along the beach and ended up turning around and going home! There were still gangs of young people talking about his many guns they had and telling people to get the “f” out of the car. My kids were terrified. There were no police to be seen and it saddens me that a few people can so easily ruin a experience for so many. I don’t understand why the police don’t just keep a couple if officers down on the beach to deter inappropriate behavior and help keep Alki a place where families can feel safe.

And every year SPD acts like this takes them by surprise when the weather first gets nice in the Spring.

Look for major problems today when all the cops are downtown for the May day riots.

  • McGruff May 1, 2014 (11:11 am)

All SPD has to do is spend a few weekends at Alki just writing tix for every infraction on cruising, noise, littering, etc. Run plates through the computer and detain any with warrants. The Gangbangers will find somewhere else to chill real fast.

  • enough May 1, 2014 (1:43 pm)

I agree McGruff, at the very least it’s worth a shot.

  • NiKi May 1, 2014 (2:47 pm)

I agree McGruff…and SPD should also extend their rounds to south of Alki (Constellation Park) where the cars are lined up and pot is being smoked freely both inside and outside of cars. I realize pot is legal, but I thought the law was the same as alcohol, as far as public consumption goes. I’m concerned with those driving impaired & under the influence, with possible buying/selling turf wars – it does not blend well with crowds and families trying to enjoy the beach. Tighter control is the only preventative measure to help keep those issues at a minimum.

  • West Seattle Hipster May 1, 2014 (3:50 pm)

I agree with McGruff, more police presence is needed.

  • MaydayMayday May 1, 2014 (7:12 pm)

People it’s May Day all that SPD has is downtown and on Capitol Hill keeping the peace. It’s a major all-hands-on deck day for them with fears of riots and lawlessness. They have a skeleton crew. They can’t do it all unless you demand more officers. No one is ever happy as if SPD is just sitting in their cars calling the shots and ignoring Alki. Not true they are stretched today.

Sorry, comment time is over.
