Followup: Driver in Roxbury crash jailed for reckless driving and pre-crash incident

New information about last night’s crash at 26th/Roxbury: We now know why one person was in handcuffs at the scene. Cuffed doesn’t always mean arrested, and no further information was available last night, but we followed up with Seattle Police today and have found out that this began as a reported domestic-violence incident. The police report says it started with a domestic disturbance in the 1300 block of SW Cambridge; a passerby “witnessed a male break down the front door to the house and yell at the people inside.” At the scene, a woman told police that her 25-year-old son – who had left before officers arrived – is having a hard time finding a job, and a hard time controlling his anger, which was touched off by an out-of-state traffic ticket, with a sizable fine, arriving in the mail. She said he was taking out his anger by repeatedly slamming the front door, with damage compounded by a real-estate lockbox getting caught in the door frame with each slam.

Shortly after leaving the residence, the suspect got into the crash at 26th and Roxbury – his 1993 Toyota Camry collided with a 1986 Chevy pickup – and was arrested at the scene. The report says he went to the Safeway to put some money in the bank and while leaving, made a wide right turn onto Roxbury, hitting the truck. The report says he was “smiling and laughing while telling (the officer) what happened.” The pickup driver told police he was going westbound on Roxbury when suddenly the Camry appeared in front of him; he tried to swerve, but the Camry also swerved/fishtailed. On impact, the report says, the pickup driver – despite being belted – “was lifted up and hit his head on the windshield.” Witnesses told police the Camry driver was speeding; one said the car was “airborne” at one point before the crash. The driver is in the King County Jail for investigation of reckless driving and domestic-violence property damage.

Talk about adding insult to injury.

We arrived came upon the scene right after it happened trying to get home. The driver of the camry was yelling, kicking the car and then proceeded to walk over to the sidewalk and beat up a tree. I feel for him with all he is going through but that is no reason to endanger others. I hope he gets the help he needs to get through the tough times.

I wonder why people are reluctant to hire him. Sounds like a model employee. Perhaps a little self-reflection is in order.

WHY do these people blame and take out THEIR problems on others, these are HIS mistakes and no other. I hope he gets the help he need to control his temper before he hurts and innocent person.

Sorry, comment time is over.
