Morgan Junction mural restoration complete – with Easter eggs!

(WSB photos)

After 176 hours spread across 22 days, the Morgan Junction mural restoration is complete! (See a “before” image here.) We stopped by this afternoon as restoration artist Bob Henry met with project masterminds Dan Austin – who first hatched the idea more than 2 1/2 years ago – and Lora Swift.

We also got a tour of the “Easter eggs” you can look for in the finished work (west wall of the building on the southwest corner of Fauntleroy/California) – like a license plate honoring a key figure in the West Seattle murals’ creation and restoration, Earl Cruzen:

And another one in honor of this particular mural’s co-creator:

The restorer added a self-portrait too:

Next up in the quest to restore the murals – the Mosquito Fleet mural on the east side of the Campbell Building in The Junction.

Will head down to check this out in person for sure! Looks good on picture so must be even better ‘IRL’ (like the cool kids say ;-) )

Wow, this looks freaking incredible. I bus/walk by this mural frequently and have enjoyed checking up on the progress every time I go by. Growing up in West Seattle, I remember as a kid seeing these murals, being parked next to them waiting for my parents, etc. so these are really special for me. They really are an integral part of the junction. Amazing job and way to preserve a special part of the community.

Looks like he added a person of color as per my, and my husband’s, request. Nice!

This makes my so happy! Our home (built in 1920) is in the mural. With all the older homes being torn down for ugly boxes, it’s refreshing that these West Seattle murals get new lives.

I noticed the website MuralsofWestSeattle.org mentioned in earlier coverage isn’t live, but they’d asked for photos.   Any idea if it was specific to picture-type photos? This past weekend I came across some decent condition West Seattle Herald clippings of this mural’s opening (from Sept 19, 1990) in and then a color, front page version from the West Seattle Herald from November 14, 1990 that was in color and had this mural and then the 5 others on section B (some are in color).Newspaper color and being largely circulated, maybe it’s nothing special, but if it would be helpful to answer the prior call of “We would also love to enlist the help of any one who may have old photos of the murals ” I’d like to know so I can bring them in.I’ve also come across a color 17.5″ by 23″ print of this Morgan mural that was printed by the Renton Printery, Color Separation by Wy’east Color.  It looks like it might be from an original fundraiser for the project.  Condition of it might not be perfect for framing anymore either.

Sorry, comment time is over.
