4TH OF JULY: Police plan reroutes to clear outbound Alki traffic more quickly tomorrow night

If you’re going to Alki for the 4th of July – you need to know about reroutes that police are planning in hopes of getting traffic cleared out more efficiently. “We’re trying something a little different this year,” is how Southwest Precinct Sgt. Ryan Long explained it. If you’re going up the California Way hill to California SW, once you get to Admiral, you’ll have to turn left – eastbound. If you’re heading southbound on Harbor toward the bridge, once you get to Spokane, you’ll have to turn left – eastbound. In order to set that up as a “free left turn,” traffic coming downhill – northbound – on Avalon will be directed onto EB Genesee. Sgt. Long says this will all start around 10 tomorrow night and will last just as long as it takes for people to clear out.

It’s about time! I’ve lived on this street for 30+ years and it takes  hours for traffic to move, all because of that light at Harbor & Spokane. All kinds of frustration could have been eliminated with SPD taking control of of the intersection. New Years Eve is just as bad for traffic.

Thank You SPD!  Lets move forward instead of living in the past…..Already seeing parking enforcement in Don Armeni park this 4th of July morning.Happy 4th!

I used to live on Harbor and I think this will be very helpful for clearing out that traffic more efficiently. That dern light always causes gridlock all the way past Salty’s.

Hello! I have been living in West Seattle for 12 years, and I have only gone once before, but I am just wondering the best place to view the fireworks and where people gather.  I am tired of GasWorks, and like I said, I have only viewed once before from West Seattle, so I would love to know where people look at the fireworks from Alki! Thank you!

As mentioned on our 4th of July page, the view’s not bad from anyplace in north West Seattle where you can see the north end of downtown – especially Don Armeni. But people are usually already staking out their spots by now, so don’t expect to just show up at the last minute and have a view. One year I watched from the sidewalk along Olga uphill from Belvedere Park/Viewpoint …

Sorry, comment time is over.
