UPDATE: Emergency response in The Junction

6:53 PM: Just in case you’re in the area and wondering: Though a response happening right now at 42nd/Alaska was dispatched as “scenes of violence” (formerly “assault with weapons”), scanner traffic indicates the incident did not involve any injury after all. However, police are looking for a suspect, and so we’re on the way to find out what the call is about.

7:02 PM: A sergeant at the scene would only say that this started as some kind of argument and they’re trying to sort out the details.

There was definitely someone injured, but probably not bad enough to require medical assistance.  It was right in front of the Junction QFC.  By the time we walked by, a man was being looked after by several other people, including store staff.  Looked like perhaps he had been hit in the head, but we weren’t very close.  No one appeared to be on the lookout for anyone.By the time we had grabbed our car, about a half dozen cop cars and at least one fire engine were on the way.

Thanks. Definitely no transport needed; police were very clear on the radio that there was no injury but maybe they were missing an adjective like “serious.” SFD pulled out pretty quickly.

Just saw this while walking up Alaska to go into QFC. The lunch bunch as they are called by some QFC staff were hanging out by entrance.  Another guy ran up on one of them and starting hitting him with a hatchet looking tool. He was screaming you stole my girlfriends backpack, where is it? I watched for quick minute but decided better of it and went in QFC  side entrance. Looking out the front door from inside i saw the assailant cross the street and walk away. Another of the lunch bunch was inside saying he got attacked for stealing that guys backpack. By time i was done shopping police were on site and firemen were just pulling up.

I was at QFC when the police were summoned. I heard from one of the employees something about a hatchet being involved!  Two squad cars and a fire department ladder truck were at the scene. The police were interviewing witnesses in the store while another officer was talking to an individual that looked homeless from his appearance and attire!

Within 24 hours in the junction, I found a crack pipe, saw 6 homeless people sleeping in storefronts, a man hiding behind a dumpster playing with himself and last night; a man fully immersed in the recycling bin behind West 5, seeming to sort through the entire container emptying it’s contents, one by one. His poor dog was laying in the alley so cars could hardly pass. Now this, first thing that comes to mind is how challenging it must be for first responders working in Seattle these days with all the homelessness, drug addiction and mental illness they deal with day in and day out- it must feel so helpless and like a broken record to them. Maybe one day, we as a city and community can come together to help these people versus stressing out our services unnecessarily.

Little brown/white dog? Yeah it’s getting worse and worse recently has a new group around who seem to be on stronger things(then alcohol). Cops won’t(or can’t as 911 told me) do anything till Somone is pysically hurt….we were told we would have patrols last summer during the day, but that stopped, and we were told they don’t have staffing for anyone to be around during peak hours/night.lot of these guys hang in our garage or the mini park(pee there etc, smoke/drink/drug , it’s non smoking the sign is on the edge of the park and not visible. I get sick all the time from the 7-9 people smoking all day. And yes the groups do get that large!)  or stash drugs in spots. (Alley area behind matador, the ciggerate disposal thing and a few spots.)Its sad sad I grew up here you could walk anywhere and feel safe…not anymore..moving as soon as I can afford too…Sorry for typos, phone.ive given up on calling mostly at this point….

You’re not the only one who feels that way about Seattle in general. Junction Plaza Park and the QFC tables by the entrance are a definitely congregation points and have been for years. It’s a shame, but you can’t fix some people. Stay safe.

  • Erithan June 3, 2018 (9:51 pm)

Er to clarify I’m just stating what’s going on. Sorry tired as heck.

Brown/white dog belongs to a guy named Chet. That guy was around WS when I was a teenager, some 20+ years ago. Seems like he went from ok to mentally unstable and looking homeless in just a few months time. Anyone know his story? I wish there was something I could do to help, especially for his little dog. No doubt he loves his buddy, but love doesn’t necessarily mean he’s getting proper care:(

    • Erithan June 3, 2018 (10:58 pm)

:( sad to hear that, he does from what I’ve seen seem to have a mental disability.  The dog does get food and seems to be doing ok(haven’t sent him too close.).

  • Alki resident June 3, 2018 (10:54 pm)

That’s my friend Chet, he used to be a grocery cashier. He won’t hurt you. His family have all passed away leaving him with nobody . He like many others are on a list for housing. His dog is all he has and is on very little income in case you’d like to hand him some cash now and then. Feel free to talk to him, he could use some compassion. I’m hoping he will stablize before winter sets in. To be perfectly honest, I cried the first time I saw him in the junction, homeless. Just goes to show it could happen to any of us.

    • carrie ann June 5, 2018 (7:24 pm)

I met Chet and his dog, Buddy, through a friend who had met him only a week prior, in the Admiral Junction. I was able to gift him a little raincoat our pup wasn’t fond of, and put together a care package of homemade banana bread & other soft snacks, toiletries, sanitary items, etc. Didn’t want to overload or overwhelm him since he has to carry his items around, but wanted to lend a hand to a neighbor in need. Really nice guy, chatted with him one afternoon at the farmers market, and got lots of snuggles and petting time in with Buddy.

    • Lisab June 5, 2018 (8:33 pm)

Sounds like he has a good friend in you Alki resident and very kind of you Carrie Ann in how you helped.  I’ll keep my eye out for him and his pup.  Wish him blessings!

I thought there was an SPD point officer for Junction concerns? I can’t remember his name but maybe someone else does and can share it. Thanks.

There’s some suspicious activity that’s been going on for months in the underground qfc parking garage. We live across the street and our kitchen window looks right into a supposed locked side door that people prop open. My husband and I see people coming and going in very early hours, urinating in the open, sleeping standing up with a needle nearby (most recently just outside the petco). We’ve called the non emergency line before- nothing happens so we just stopped. Was going to call most recently about the visible drug use but thought why bother ? We thought about contacting the building owner- but again why bother?

    • WSB June 4, 2018 (11:54 am)

Because if you don’t bother, there’s a 100 percent chance nothing will happen. If you do bother – there’s a chance something will. Calls like this ARE dispatched. I sit in front of the scanner day and night. It all depends on what else is happening when you call.

      • KD June 4, 2018 (12:08 pm)

         .. Thankyou!

      • Chris June 4, 2018 (12:37 pm)

So this time the police were called after someone was attacked by what sounds like a hatchet and claiming another person stole from their girlfriend.  Sounds like two crimes were committed – who was arrested?  If broad daylight attacks don’t bring arrest why should the public believe their non-emergency calls will stop.  The SPD will let this person go right until finally they kill someone with that hatchet.  Ask Ryan Cox

        • WSB June 4, 2018 (12:48 pm)

SPD did NOT let Ryan Cox go, if you want to bring that into it. We’ve covered that case extensively. There are certainly problems further down the criminal-justice system line but he was arrested, repeatedly, and prosecuted, too. As for “who was arrested” yesterday? Don’t know if anyone was. But you can’t assume that means someone deliberately wasn’t.

          • Chris June 4, 2018 (3:39 pm)

Well maybe I can get your help to solve this question of if anyone was arrested.  I looked up the police report and it is “inactive” on operational status – does that mean there is an ongoing investigation or anyone charge with crime?

          • Chris June 4, 2018 (3:50 pm)

So your argument is that it was the larger criminal justice system that let him slip through the cracks.  I don’t think that is any comfort to anyone.

          • WSB June 4, 2018 (3:57 pm)

In Ryan Cox’s case, the mental-health care net – what little of one we have – is perhaps the most notable failure.

Please call the building management every time you see something like this —
or go knock on their door (CAPCO (Leon Capelouto) in the QFC/Altamira building). It is 100% their responsibility to clean up
      and secure their own building.

    • Nate June 4, 2018 (4:11 pm)

Please call Altamira Apts and complain. They manage the stairs

  • Huck June 4, 2018 (12:21 pm)

I made the mistake of taking the stairs from the QFC underground parking lot to the street. The staircase was covered in trash and someone was living in the cubby hole off one of the landings. The smell of urine and feces was unbearable.

    • Cashmere June 4, 2018 (3:12 pm)

      ^^^^ yes!!!

  • Junction Lady June 5, 2018 (5:47 am)

…sadly, prior to the crime at QFC I witnessed a tip jar snatching at Al a Mode by two men working as a team.

Sorry, comment time is over.
