CRIME WATCH: Admiral stabbing case update; car-prowl reader report

In West Seattle Crime Watch tonight:

ADMIRAL STABBING CASE UPDATE: Today brought another hearing for Kierra Ward, in jail in lieu of $400,000 bail since last October, when she was arrested and charged with attacking a woman out for a walk with her baby in Admiral. Ward’s trial has again been delayed, this time because, court documents say, a mental evaluation has been requested, as her defense lawyer plans to contend that she was insane at the time of the attack. The order resulting from today’s hearing also says she will be evaluated for competency to stand trial. The results should be available before her next scheduled hearing July 13th.

Also in Crime Watch, one reader report from the inbox:

CAR BREAK-IN: Jackie e-mailed to report, “I just wanted to make my fellow neighbors aware that my car was broken into last evening in the Fauntleroy/Arbor Heights neighborhood. I lived in Capitol Hill for years and never had an incident, but apparently, West Seattle is different. The break-in occurred between the evening of 6/7 to the morning of 6/8. Please make sure to be vigilant and not have any personal belongings in your car.”

    Sorry, that happened to you, but blaming the car break in on the neighborhood seems short sighted.  Our car was broken into once in Ballard, and a couple times in Capitol Hill (within the span of a couple years) but never in WS in the 12 years we’ve lived in west seattle.

    Tierra Ward belongs behind bars the rest of her life.  She knife attacked a mother with a child with eyewitnesses.  This was a henious crime deserving no mercy!

    • Bradley June 9, 2018 (2:30 am)

      Absolutely. It was only by sheer luck that the mother and child weren’t killed that day.

    • Jethro Marx June 9, 2018 (8:24 am)

      Indeed, and let us celebrate the merciless among us! Mercy is for the weak! We need law and order!   So say dictators everywhere. While the alleged crime certainly wasn’t ‘henious,’ I do agree that we shouldn’t tolerate random stabbings; however, there’s a difference between acts of violence committed by the mentally ill and the more or less sane among us. What do you think a truly merciless society looks like? Be careful what you wish for.

        JM, You’re the only one celebrating the merciless (ward). I think an insane attacker stabs as deeply as a sane? stabber- and will be shown far more mercy than was afforded the mother and infant. Scary society yours that rises to intolerance of random stabbings, what?

      “The quality of mercy is not strained;
      It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
      Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
      It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
      ‘T is mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
      The throned monarch better than his crown:
      His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
      The attribute to awe and majesty,
      Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
      But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
      It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
      It is an attribute to God himself;
      And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
      When mercy seasons justice.”

    My truck was broken into last night (again).  They took a box that I had picked up from the post office during the day but was unable to bring into the apartment because I just had surgery and was unable to lift it.  The box has 5 pair of shoes inside – from Cydwoq, mens 10.5, all pairs are black leather (4 shoes, 1 boot).  I cannot afford to replace these shoes.

    She belongs in a mental health facility.

    I see a growing memorial on Alki for last weekend’s stabbing. Any updates?

    • WSB June 9, 2018 (9:40 am)

      On the investigation, no. There was some police activity at the scene last night while people were gathered but nothing on the logs indicates whether it was or wasn’t related. Meantime, I checked the Medical Examiner’s daily list all week, no ID; the Seattle Times published a name last night, Jonathan Pecina, but the surname doesn’t match what I found online (but unverified) early on via social media, cross-referencing the nickname someone had posted in a comment on our original story. Obituary to which the Times linked has the same photo, though.

        Yes, gathering of about 10 folks last night and Thursday night and police cruiser idling nearby both nights.

    You’re right, Ward does velong in a mebtal facility. Then prison after.

    • heartless June 9, 2018 (11:11 am)

      You seem more than a little confused about how our laws work.

      • Helpful June 11, 2018 (12:43 am)

        Me too. Please enlighten us.

  • Lauren June 9, 2018 (1:40 pm)

    Jackie, I’m sorry your car was broken into. FYI cars are broken into all over the city.

    We can all have our opinions. WS is very different in feel from the other residential areas in the city. Lawless is the wrong word – way too far – but it feels completely up for grabs in WS. Not enough police, or at least not where the theft and break-ins are occurring. Noise has gotten progressively worse in the 2 yrs we’ve been around. Transient drunkeness is way worse. And then the two stabbings.So we moved our kids and us away this summer, after realizing that stabbings/crime/ lower QOL were going to be part of the new norm. Nothing against anyone in WS, we loved a lot about it. But whether due to city prerogatives or horrible luck, it is really sliding.

Sorry, comment time is over.
