FOLLOWUP: Police continue to search for killer in Lorenzo Marr shooting at West Seattle Stadium

2:02 PM: Two days after West Seattle’s first homicide of 2018, no arrest yet in the shooting death of 44-year-old Lorenzo Marr at WS Stadium. That’s according to Seattle Police; we talked with Southwest Precinct commander Capt. Pierre Davis before he spoke to today’s West Seattle Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting at The Kenney. He said the belief that it wasn’t random is the newest information on the case, and they are continuing to look for a silver Toyota Camry – sightings reported so far have not panned out. Mr. Marr was identified publicly by friends and family last night as they launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover funeral costs. According to the Rainier Beach Track Club – one of two community-center track clubs (along with High Point) there for a meet on Tuesday night – Mr. Marr was a club dad. The shooting happened about 7:30 pm Tuesday in the stadium parking lot; the victim, who police say was shot multiple times, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center but could not be saved. ADDED 3:49 PM: From Seattle Parks this afternoon:

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is deeply saddened by the events that took place on May 8 outside of West Seattle stadium during an SPR youth track meet. Our thoughts are with the families, children, and staff who were present at the stadium.

We are grateful to staff and parents who quickly responded to keep children and families safe and sheltered. Johnnie Williams, Luwam Ogube and Brieah Marino as well as other staff, acted heroically and we cannot thank them enough for their quick judgement and bravery.

We have scheduled a Community Healing Circle with Reverend Harriett Walden on Saturday, May 12 from 10 am-1 pm at Rainier Community Center (Gym #2). We invite all those seeking support to attend.

We are canceling the Lowell Barry track meet that was scheduled for Saturday, May 12.

City Championship track meets will take place on Monday and Tuesday, May 14 & May 15 at Chief Sealth HS Stadium. Monday’s meet is for ages 7-10, and begins at 5:30 pm. Tuesday’s meet is for ages 11-18, and begins at 5:30 pm.

We have reached out to Seattle Police Department to request their presence at both championship meets.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, the families and children who were participating, and the SPR staff and volunteers who run the track and field program. Again, we are incredibly grateful to our staff who quickly reacted to keep our kids and families safe during this event, and we will be considering how to offer active shooter training for all youth athletic coaches, volunteers, and staff.

Can you clarify “not at random?” Is that the same as premeditated or does that mean there was an altercation?

    • WSB May 10, 2018 (8:55 pm)

The language SPD used (as first mentioned yesterday) is “Detectives now believe that the victim in (the) shooting may have been targeted.”

  • Elle Nell May 10, 2018 (9:27 pm)

That might mean this was a result of something he did or was involved with…. just guessing here.

    • JanS May 11, 2018 (1:02 am)

Elle Nell…or something he didn’t do, but someone perceived it as such.  What you are saying, or at least it comes across as…blaming the victim for being shot to death. Mr. Marr is the victim, and no one deserves to be shot dead because someone may have a beef with them. Let’s all remember that.

    • Soccer dad May 11, 2018 (6:27 am)

They said could be related to shooting at biker club in skyway. haven’t made any new info.

    • DS May 11, 2018 (1:38 pm)

“Something he was involved with…” Like what? What are you speculating?

Stop speaking out of your privileged bubble existence and listen to yourself. Don’t blame the victim. Check your privilege.

      • Elle Nell May 11, 2018 (11:17 pm)

I was answering a question above…. do NOT speculate who are speaking to. It’s actually comical… if you could only see me. Check yourself.

I must ask, there’s a meet that I’m participating in TOMORROW at this stadium, yet there’s been no talk of police and security presence or moving the location all together. I can’t help but worry, seeing as this is the first meet at this location since the shooting.

    • Highpointtrackmom May 11, 2018 (8:04 am)

We received notice from the High Point coach that the meet has been canceled on Saturday. Feel free to post your email address and I can pass it along to you or call front desk at cc.

It’s been such a traumatic week for us all. So hard….

Dear ?, this is intended to be kind, not sarcastic, while this was a TERRIBLE incident that happened at this location, it does not mean this location is a particularly dangerous place. If that makes sense. West Seattle Stadium has been a safe place for families and friends to enjoy sporting events or to exercise for years. I have been at events or just gone for a run/walk here many times in the 15 years I’ve lived in West Seattle and this was the first time a situation like this last weekend has happened. Our community is feeling the pain of what happened here immensely, but i would not NOT go to your track meet tomorrow assuming that it is unsafe. Regardless of police or security presence. In due respect to the Marr family :(

I have been going to this track for years & I don’t feel the same. I have been there during 3 situations. Two of which were with my children. One time my child just barely missed seeing a dead person with a gunshot wound to the head. We need police presence at this location, because many don’t feel safe.

  • Bradley May 11, 2018 (10:01 am)

The stadium/track is just as safe as anywhere else in West Seattle, and definitely safer than some. This murder could have happened anywhere where there was a gathering, as police are publically indicating that the victim was likely targeted. However, any large sporting event such as a youth track meet anywhere in the community needs to have a police presence. Even our high school football games 40 years ago had at least one uniformed officer on site. I’m shocked that there wasn’t any SPD unit assigned to this meet, given the volume of spectators, participants, and vehicles.

OMG a man has lost his life here, whether it random intentional or…think of his children, partner/spouse and family. As people above have posted, they have been using this field for 15 plus years and it has always been safe. If this would had happened at your local grocery store would you expect or need police presence  there to walk you thru the aisles while grocery shopping?!

As “K” stated lets please respect the Marr Family in this terrible time and try not to post about “it’s about me” “me” for them and hope the suspect is found quickly.

      Amen

  • Cautious May 11, 2018 (12:16 pm)

Can anyone validate that the GoFundMe is legitimate? I’d like to contribute but I’ve heard of scammers setting up memorial funds in someone else’s name, and pocketing all the cash for themselves. In this case, I see that the campaign was created by a C. Harris. I’m not sure who that is or what their association is with the grieving mother Loraine Marr.

    • WSB May 11, 2018 (12:37 pm)

It’s all explained in the copy of the one of the GFM updates. C. Harris is a cousin.

      • Cautious May 11, 2018 (12:39 pm)

Very good, I’d missed that. Thanks for the help!

    • GFY May 12, 2018 (12:43 pm)

It’s legitimate. Don’t mind my name. It was in response to some prick “speculating” up there in the comments.

  • Citizen May 11, 2018 (1:37 pm)

And his mother’s name is Lorraine Harris, not Lorraine Marr, FWIW

So sad for this family…definitly pray justice someone must have seen or knows something pray they say something

  • Devin D May 11, 2018 (7:36 pm)

Is it true that this was Aristotle Marr’s brother? And/or that it may be related to carryover from the Skyway shooting?  Or speculation/rumor?

    • Soccer dad May 12, 2018 (11:58 am)

Yes is true is brother. Have not heard anything about it being related just a lot violonce around summer coming is always a chance for disaster has been for years luckily had been avoided but with summer you have people out and about way way more so chances of people that have problems crossing paths going up up up so seems like this year what has been luckily avoided for years finally luck ran out. Would advise all to be safe and aware all summer hopefully ends but could be start to warfare on the street level with missle precision which gets targets but civilian deaths happen often…. all be safe

  • Dan yushi May 18, 2018 (1:27 pm)

The West Seattle Stadium shooting from what I read on the West Seattle Blog was very unfortunate and strange. Personally I think its stupid that people waste life’s like that but it was most likely out of anger. The 44 year was apparently targeted by other gang members for something he did 10 plus years (just rumors on the streets.) I think it is very sad the man’s son was at the track meet when all this happened. Nothing but my condolence to their family’s.

Sorry, comment time is over.
