UPDATE: Arson detectives investigating car fire at Southwest Athletic Complex

(UPDATED 11:28 AM with more info from SPD)

3:34 AM: SPD and SFD are investigating that car fire, reported about an hour ago in the Southwest Athletic Complex area. In radio discussion, the car was described as having been found fully engulfed in flames – as shown in the photo tweeted by Pat – with no one inside and no one around.

11:29 AM: SPD confirms that its arson detectives are handling the investigation. The car was a 1996 Toyota Corolla – not reported as stolen, in case you wondered (we did). But given the circumstances, it was impounded after the fire was out.

ADDED TUESDAY: In a West Seattle crime discussion at the Fauntleroy Community Association meeting, Southwest Precinct Lt. Ron Smith mentioned that investigators believe an accelerant was used in this fire.

where is the Southwest Athletic Complex located?

East of Southwest Pool/Neighborhood Service Center, across Thistle from Chief Sealth International High School, across Trenton from the north side of Westwood Village.

@WSB… Wow that was a mouthful you just wrote!

    LOL!!!

The exact address doesn’t much describe it – for one, the blocks are a little out of synch, with Sealth at 2600 SW Thistle on the north side and Southwest Pool/Teen Life Center/Athletic Complex at 2801 on the other ..

The car was in the big parking lot adjacent to the Chief Sealth football stadium and Southwest Pool. The photo above was taken by someone standing on the corner of Cloverdale and 29th Ave SW. I live nearby and I hear a loud “boom” at about 2:30 am (which I presume was the gas tank igniting). I looked out the window and saw flames, and called 911 (though I heard sirens so others had already called before me). I’ll be curious to find out what the story is on this one.

I heard the same boom from 28th and Thistle but figured it was a firework. The SW Complex Parking lot is a popular place to do that.

Sorry, comment time is over.
