TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATE: 1st Ave. S./Spokane intersection reopens after bicycle/truck collision

4:49 PM: Thanks for the tips: If you use 1st Avenue South to get to/from, or instead of, the West Seattle Bridge, be advised the intersection is closed right now, after a collision that SPD says involved a bicycle rider and a semitruck.

5:39 PM: Per scanner, 1st/Spokane is now reopening, all directions. Right now, though, we don’t have any information about the condition of anyone involved in the collision.

ADDED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: As noted in comments, SPD provided some information in a blotter post today; the collision involved a bicyclist and dump-truck driver. The bicyclist is a 61-year-old man whose injuries are described as life-threatening.

I hope the bike rider is ok, I’ve riden this route many times myself.  All people need to be aware of each other, old fashioned eye contact is best.

    Prayers for the cyclist.

news stories of accidents involving cyclists and motorcyclists always make my heart skip a beat.  i was once a bike commuter and gave it up years ago but know how harrowing it can be to ride near those semi trucks in dawn and dusk. too many people in our community have lost their lives as a result of people vs trucks/cars.

i hope the cyclist is ok in this case.  please update when possible.

Hope this rider has a speedy recovery, I love to bike but find myself keeping to paths and out of the way places. I’m out of bounces  and bikes move faster than cars can react simple fact ignore it and well things might not go your way…

Was it a person on a motorcycle or a bicycle that was involved in the accident? The headline says motorcycle.

Thank you for catching that error, going on 24 hours later … all references say bicycle; for some reason I put motorcycle in the headline. Fixing.

Sorry, comment time is over.
