ELECTION 2017: One more West Seattle appearance for mayoral candidates

If you couldn’t make it to last Thursday night’s West Seattle forum with six citywide candidates (WSB video/photos/text coverage here), you have another chance this week to see two of them here – mayoral hopefuls Jenny Durkan and Cary Moon.

(WSB photo from Thursday night forum)

They’re scheduled to appear during the second half of the West Seattle Democratic Women‘s lunch meeting on Thursday (October 26th) at WS Golf Course, 12:30 pm-1:15 pm (the meeting starts at 11:30 am). If you’re interested in ordering lunch – you need to e-mail chair Rachel Glass by Monday morning – werdachel (at) aol (dot) com – it’s $13.50 members, $15 non-members. If you’re not interested in lunch, there’s a $5 program fee that includes coffee/tea and dessert. The golf course meeting room is right off the parking lot, 4600 35th SW.

I thought the City Mayor is a non partison position?

    • WSB October 22, 2017 (1:11 pm)

Yes, it is, but that does *not* mean candidates can’t appear before partisan groups and/or describe themselves as members of a party.

Mark — When you read KC’s official voter’s pamphlet, both mayoral candidates are extremely left leaning.  One candidate is more upfront with her leftist mindset.  Seattle is in desperate need of a nonpartisan mayoral candidate but that is not happening in the 2017 mayoral race.

Seattlite that was the point of my comment.  A pragmatic center left leader is needed, not another out of bounds lefty

Allowing vehicles to park on a street for over 72 hours is a case in point. The law is 72 hours, enforce it!

They are, and that’s why the RVs have been moved off Myers Way, for example. I wrote about that in coverage of last month’s HPAC meeting:
      https://westseattleblog.com/2017/09/highland-park-action-committee-roundabout-update-crime-safety-and-westside-neighbors-network/

And as for candidates’ leanings, the primary field in the mayor’s race had more than a few centrists/conservatives. What would seem to have been needed for them to advance was more voters with those interests, not more candidates.

WSB…That’s correct about there being a bit of diversity in the candidates.  None of the candidates met my expectations as qualifying as a leader who could lead Seattle with a pure heart of honesty and loyalty to the Seattle voters.  Seattle’s leftist leaders will continue on their crazy path of squeezing out the middleclass, eventually leaving a city of just the rich and poor.

They meet the rest of Seattle’s needs apparently  :)

Frankly I wish they were further left.  When one leaves the US, and views American politics from the outside looking in:  We see that even the most liberal people in America are still very conservative in many facets.  It’s sad when people use terms like ‘Marxism and communism’, to describe any liberal politics in America (I’m not referring to you Seattlite, and the correct spelling is Seattleite I believe, if you were curious).

Hopefully we can join the rest of the Developed World in regards to Healthcare and Gun Control.

A pragmatic left leader would be nice.

The two candidates left standing are both very successful in their careers, the issue is how far to the left they are.  Basic City services need to be a priority, infrastructure is not being maintained, many areas of the City have no midday transit, yet the City spends money on other items that do not address the basics.

Its like a homeowner buying a new car instead of replacing the roof.

I don’t really consider Cary Moon to be successful. She worked for her dad and then ran an unsuccessful landscape design business. Then started calling herself an urban planner based on a certificate and founded a couple of protest based non profit organizations. In her pre-mayorial days, she even declared herself as “retired” following the unsuccessful landscaping business. So its funny that the protest of the tunnel is now somehow equal to executive experience.

AIDM – I agree on Moon. Her qualifications for public office are thin at best.

        • ScubaFrog October 24, 2017 (12:22 am)

Moon’s fun, and she’s the only one who’ll actually hold the SPD accountable.  Moreover, she’ll hold Chief O’Toole accountable (who’s chosen a full time job in Ireland).

The Durk’s too conservative for me, GO MOON!

            Fun?

I’m looking for a mayor, not a buddy to hang out with. Voters need to be applying sensible criteria in their voting.

I mean, look at what happened to our national election when people voted for someone who was ‘entertaining’.

Plenty more blocks in need of 72 hour enforcement of rvs and regular vehicles. PEOs are overehelmed. When I track the progress in find it fix it, it can easily take 2 weeks just to get the vehicle tagged. I’ve seen vehicles ticketed and tagged and they are still sitting a month or more later.

  • chemist October 22, 2017 (7:46 pm)

Why the focus on 72 hours?

There’s not a lot of manufacturing and industrial-zoned areas in West Seattle so the “80+ inch wide vehicle” overnight parking prohibition in residential zones probably applies too.

    http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/parking/parking72hour.htm

Additionally, the Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) prohibits vehicles over 80 inches in width (such as RVs, tractor trailers, and larger trucks) from parking on most city streets (any street except those adjacent to Manufacturing or Industrial zoning) between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m. (SMC 11.72.070). The Seattle Police Department routinely enforces these ordinances and also responds to specific cases when alerted by complaints from the public – please use the non-emergency number (206-625-5011) to report violations.

I don’t get the complaining about the 72 hour thing re the mayor – that’s a police/city attorney function.  Isn’t that where frustration should be focused?  And believe me, I’m with you folks about that issue – it is an epidemic.

Durkan will get my vote.  Not sure where people get the idea she’s a “far lefty”.  She’s very accomplished  at pretty much everything she’s done.  Granted – no prior city experience and there’s no guarantee that being an effective U.S. Attorney translates into being an effective mayor … but I’m willing to take that chance.  Ms. Moon’s ill-informed opposition to the tunnel project told me all I need to know about her lack of understanding on a big issue.  I’m sure she means well, but I can’t overlook that serious lapse in judgment.

still pissed off about that tunnel, huh?

      you won. get over it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
