WEST SEATTLE ECLIPSE WATCHING: Where to look for special glasses

EDITOR’S NOTE: With nine days until the solar eclipse, we’re getting questions about where to get viewing glasses, and West Seattle’s best-known sky-watcher has put together a list. Watch for more pre-eclipse coverage here tomorrow and beyond, too.

By Alice Enevoldsen
Special to West Seattle Blog

I will tell you where you can get safe eclipse glasses after two short paragraphs of safety information; my conscience won’t let me skip the safety warnings.

Eclipse Glasses

You absolutely need special equipment to see this event safely.

Eclipse glasses are also called solar-observing glasses and they are not related to sunglasses. There are only a handful of companies that make glasses that meet the current international standard of safety.

To use glasses safely:

*Check that they are marked compliant with the safety standard ISO 12312-2:2015

*Check that the lenses are flat and free from scratches, punctures, or damage. Discard them if there are problems.

*Stand still, looking away from the Sun.

*Put on the glasses.

*Look toward the Sun.

*If the Sun looks bright, or your eyes get tired from the glare, then the filter is letting too much light though. Look away and use a different filter.

“West” Seattle Sources for Eclipse Glasses

I’ve included some farther than West Seattle because everywhere has limited supplies. Most of these locations have the glasses behind the main counter.

Seattle Public Library Branches — FREE!

All the branches of the Seattle Public Library are participating in the Space Science Institute’s STAR_Net Initiative with support from NASA, Google, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. You can pick up one pair per family while supplies last.

(UPDATE: Since we published this – we’ve been told Seattle Public Library branches are OUT. So scroll down to the other suggestions. Ken @ High Point Library says that branch’s eclipse-viewing gathering 8:30-11:30 am on the 21st will have glasses to share. ALSO see comments below this story for additional locations reported by readers.)

(Friendly local librarians at High Point Branch are standing by to assist you in staying safe during the eclipse!)

Online

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific still has stock as of publication.
Lunt Solar Systems also still has stock, and they have a smaller size available as well.
The American Astronomical Society lists many other sources, but does not track availability.

As of Last Wednesday the we were told at SW Library that Delridge is the only library in WS to have the glasses.  All others were given out. Unless they got more in, I’d call first.

  • eclipse eyewear August 12, 2017 (4:57 pm)

i was at the delridge library earlier this afternoon, asked for a pair, and was told they have no more–they’ve given them all out and most other branches are also out, according to the one librarian i spoke to. not sure how accurate that is for every branch across the city but thought i’d share what i was told.

    :(

    • WSB August 12, 2017 (5:02 pm)

Ken from High Point Library just e-mailed to say that. It’s not mentioned on the SPL website, and I would think that would be something they’d want to put in big bold letters. We’ll research further. Alice sent us the story just a ~day ago … so the research is recent. But I’ll add the disclaimer.

      • Alice August 12, 2017 (11:51 pm)

The research is recent, but everywhere has very, very limited supplies. Between the time I went to all these places and send the list in, Museum of Flight sold out of all their single pairs and are down to the map+glasses sets.

This list will evolve over the next nine days: keep commenting!

  • Azimuth August 12, 2017 (5:22 pm)

Not quite WS but Fred Meyer has had plenty. $1.99 each

    • WSB August 12, 2017 (5:56 pm)

Thank you! I meant to add ‘and please let us know if you see them elsewhere’ ….

    • Alice August 12, 2017 (11:48 pm)

Awesome! The more places we can get on this list the better.

  • Chris Stripinis August 12, 2017 (7:11 pm)

I got some at Big 5 Sporting Goods in Westwood Village.  $2 each, right at the register.

    • WSB August 12, 2017 (7:34 pm)

      Thanks for the additional suggestions!

    • Paula August 17, 2017 (12:32 pm)

      They’re all sold out

  • Sue August 12, 2017 (7:13 pm)

    I saw some at QFC

    • Alice August 12, 2017 (11:48 pm)

      Ooo! Thanks for the report.

  • Bill August 12, 2017 (7:15 pm)

Welding glasses number 14. Or poke a hole in a piece of paper and see the shadow.

    • Alice August 12, 2017 (11:54 pm)

There are a plethora of methods to safely observe the eclipse. SAFETY DISCLAIMER: do not look through the pinhole: the pinhole is for projection.

(I can’t tell you know this, Bill, from your phrasing, but it bears stating explicitly for other readers just in case)

I’m peeved at Amazon! Bought mine months ago just to get the recall email today. Second time I’ve had to deal with counterfeit issues from them. Now I have to scramble!

  • Someone in Genesee August 12, 2017 (9:04 pm)

Don’t forget that if you are using a camera to photograph it, you can seriously injure yourself or destroy the camera’s sensor. The following link contains information to safely photograph it for you & your camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/how-photograph-solar-eclipse

  • Melinda August 14, 2017 (9:42 am)

I just placed an order online at Cloud Break Optics. You can use the store’s address as shipping destination to pick up at the store.  There were 60 left (5 glasses for $10) as of 9:40am Mon morning.

I called all local Fred Meyer, Lowes, Big 5- all sold out as of this morning. Big 5 in Ballard said they might have more in a shipment received this morning, but you would have to call this afternoon to confirm.

    Happy viewing!

    • WSB August 14, 2017 (9:53 am)

      Thank you for the update!

    • KJK August 14, 2017 (1:38 pm)

  • Jen Kantzer August 14, 2017 (11:58 am)

I just picked up 15 from Fred Meyer in Renton. They still have a small display but the cashier said she’s had four calls today asking already, the first calls she’s had.

    • TeacherMom August 14, 2017 (2:20 pm)

The Renton/Benson FM says they are out, but my son just picked some up in Kent, at the Fred Meyer on 240th. Farther south, Auburn also says they have some.

    • Chris August 15, 2017 (3:36 pm)

Are you willing to sell a pair or 2?

  • seattlesunburn August 14, 2017 (2:23 pm)

As of about an hour ago, Burien Fred Meyer is out again. They went through 800 today alone.

  • KH August 14, 2017 (9:50 pm)

Thanks for the cloud optics online shop tip! Been running around all over the eastside and westside to no avail. They have qty 74 (5 pack) left with expedited shipping as of this post.

  • Seabruce August 14, 2017 (10:24 pm)

Surprised no entrepreneur WSB sponsor didn’t make up some promo glasses to give away.

  • Amy August 14, 2017 (10:25 pm)

Benson/Renton Fred Meyer had them this morning.

  • Jane August 15, 2017 (11:08 am)

I just walked in and purchased an eclipse viewing kit at Cloud Break Optics in Ballard. They still have the single glasses at the counter (which can also be purchased as packs of 5 and 10).

  • tckhan August 15, 2017 (12:17 pm)

Wife just now, bought us some at the FredMeyer at 17801 108th Ave SE, Renton.   $2/ea

The one near Walmart was out.

Clerk told her someone just bought 250 of them,  assuming they were gonna resell.

    • Jeff August 15, 2017 (2:01 pm)

Just bought 4 at Fred Meyer Benson Plaza, at Electronics Department. They have about 100 left!

      • Scott Smith August 15, 2017 (3:49 pm)

I just picked up a couple pairs from here. They had maybe twenty left in the display at the end of checkout 2.

        • John August 19, 2017 (9:21 am)

A worker just told me every Fred Meyer in Puget Sound is out.

  • PLS August 15, 2017 (1:11 pm)

Can confirm that Junction QFC and Trader Joe’s have none.

  • wsDodgeChallengerOwner August 15, 2017 (1:43 pm)

I remember the good old days when you could make an eclipse viewer with paper and a pencil :-)

  • Stella August 15, 2017 (2:15 pm)

Just bought 3 pair for $5/each at Cloud Break Optics in Ballard/Seattle next to LockSpot.  There was a steady line when I was there.

  • sam-c August 15, 2017 (4:33 pm)

Well, we managed to get glasses for our family ahead of time about a week and a half ago at Fred Meyer, and another pair at the library, but I have a meeting from 9am-10am (and it will likely run over as it usually does). Who plans a meeting during the eclipse ?!?!?

    • WSB August 15, 2017 (4:38 pm)

Given the level of fascination, should be a holiday!

      • Sam-c August 15, 2017 (8:32 pm)

Seriously! Really should be a holiday. I’d love to call in “sick” but i also want to stay employed.

  • AVB August 15, 2017 (5:28 pm)

I also picked up some at the Benson Fred Meyer.   Thanks for the info

  • Lynda P. August 15, 2017 (5:40 pm)

Up in the North Seattle area today–Went today to Ballard Fred Meyer, Ballard 7/11, Lowes and Home Depot on Aurora in N Seattle, Target and public library at Northgate–none were available at these locations.  Still looking

  • Sonny August 15, 2017 (6:14 pm)

    Looking on south end today

    • Emma August 16, 2017 (9:38 am)

Let me know if you find any. I’ve called several places today. No luck. Fred Meyer, home depot, Lowe’s, library, cloud optics, 7-11…..

  • 3xcharmama August 16, 2017 (10:21 am)

I just talked with both Fred Meyer and Big 5, they are sold out ACROSS THE STATE so none of those stores have any more as of 10am Wednesday August 16th

  • Rachel August 16, 2017 (11:42 am)

Please let me know if anyone has seen some in stock (Wed 11:30am). Thanks!

  • Mia August 16, 2017 (1:38 pm)

I bought 2 pairs of the solar glasses in Cloud Break Optics this morning (1130 wed). They seem to have tons of their original glasses (of course ISO certified). But there were stable lines while I was there.

  • WSB August 16, 2017 (1:40 pm)

The library says it’s officially all out everywhere, for those still looking.

But as mentioned earlier, they plan to have glasses available for sharing during viewing parties on eclipse morning at High Point and South Park …

    • Jaygee August 16, 2017 (1:45 pm)

Central Welding Supply in Ballard still has glasses. $20 apiece though.

  • Sonny August 16, 2017 (2:40 pm)

There has been quite a big response and I’ve met a bunch of really great neighbors! All the extra glasses are spoken for right now. I’m having my mom send some so I’ll update here when I get them on Friday. Thanks!

    • Kjo August 16, 2017 (4:29 pm)

Hi Sonny ~ I would love to buy a pair or two from you on Friday if you get more! Should I just look here on Friday? Thanks!

    • Kris August 16, 2017 (8:35 pm)

I need 3 or 4 pairs if u will have to sell. On Friday.

      Thanks

  • brad August 16, 2017 (4:31 pm)

I’ll also see you there, and want four if possible! (Not being selfish, we are sharing with other families) 😊

  • Hannah August 17, 2017 (11:21 am)

Cloud Break says they are getting more in, anyone else have leads?

    • Lynne August 17, 2017 (2:20 pm)

Just went by Cloud Break on my lunch break thinking since it was mid day it might not be bad…. the line spanned from the store all the way into the entrance of the Ballard locks and traffic was jammed up. Guessing they will sell out very shortly if they haven’t already.

      • Hannah August 18, 2017 (1:39 pm)

Ugh i thought as much. I am happy I was able to meet Sonny and nerd out with him for a moment about science and take a lil walk around California. I even bought a back to school folder in QFC after i got the glasses so I wouldn’t mess them up and could still have an afternoon stroll. THANK YOU SONNY FOR THE GROUNDWORK esp for people who are huge space cadets and prepared last month but lost their glasses :) have so much fun and relish all the moments in totality for us back here <3

  • MTS August 17, 2017 (11:53 am)

Sonny, are you by QFC today by any chance? I was out of town yesterday.

  • Sonny August 17, 2017 (12:01 pm)

Sorry if anyone’s waiting? I’m stuck behind drawbridge, will be a few min late.

    • Melissa L August 17, 2017 (12:13 pm)

Please keep us posted!  You’ve got quite a few waiting!

    • Dennisse August 17, 2017 (1:01 pm)

Hi!  Anyone have 2 pairs available still?  I’m in SODO.
      Thought I’d try here. :)

      Thank you!

      • Daniel August 17, 2017 (3:42 pm)

I bought some from Amazon last week and have 2 extra pairs. They are ISO 12312-2 approved.  I will sell them for $11.00 which is less than I paid for them when you add tax and shipping.

        206 354 9810.

        • N August 17, 2017 (7:56 pm)

If I had extra glasses, which I don’t even have any, I would give them to kids that I knew would benefit from this once in a lifetime experience at the high needs school I worked at.

        • Jenny August 18, 2017 (10:53 am)

          Hi Daniel,

Do you still have a pair left?

  • Melissa L August 17, 2017 (12:07 pm)

Sonny – I’m at QFC, are you there?

  • Sonny August 17, 2017 (2:46 pm)

I’m still at Qfc and haven’t sold out yet. I’m sitting at the picnic tables by the front door. I’m the guy with the big smile in the Hessian shirt.  Tomorrow will be my last day selling them as I’ll be on the road to totality! Thank you to all the awesome people I’ve met!

  • Brian August 17, 2017 (3:43 pm)

I just sold the last pair for today. I’m getting another delivery tomorrow and will be selling them at the same spot, the picnic tables by the Qfc in the Alaska junction. Tomorrow is the last day I’ll be selling them as I’ll be on the road to see the eclipse in the path of totality! So excited! Thanks everyone!

    • hope August 17, 2017 (6:40 pm)

What time will you be there?

      • Sonny August 17, 2017 (6:53 pm)

I’ll be at the Alaska junction Qfc before 12 and be there until I sell out. I’m still not raising the price, $10 each. Thank you! See you there!

  • Mary August 17, 2017 (6:32 pm)

Yes I’ll be at the Alaska junction Qfc at SW 42nd & Alaska SW a little before noon and I won’t be taking any roads with drawbridges! Don’t worry about the texts, everyone has been blowing my phone up, haha. I like how pumped up everyone is! Considering the fakes and crazy prices I understand how important the details are. Was great meeting you! Thanks!

    Hi everyone,

Regardless of being serious library devotees, we neglected to pick up our glasses for the summer program.

So – we purchased a 10 pack of NASA certified eclipse glasses.  We only need 4 pair.  If anyone would like to purchase any of the remaining 6 pair- at the cost of the glasses $15 / pair – please contact me:

    joplin3@mac.com

    Thanks!

    • steven August 18, 2017 (8:05 am)

I’d like to have 3 if they are still available

    • Jyothi August 18, 2017 (9:42 am)

      • gigelsmith August 18, 2017 (12:28 pm)

That guy Sonny said he will be at the QFC right now selling them till he is out. Andaluca in Columbia City had them yesterday. . . Good luck

      • Dana August 18, 2017 (12:33 pm)

I just got back from the Alaska Junction QFC. Sonny, who’s posted earlier in this comment section, is there again today. He got more glasses and is selling glasses for $10 until he runs out (he thought 3ish when I asked, though that depends on how fast they go)

        • WSB August 18, 2017 (12:45 pm)

Your comment and Sonny’s, above – that he has sold out – came in within two minutes of each other.

A reminder that the High Point and South Park library viewing parties will have glasses for people to share.

          The forecast looks great! https://atmos.washington.edu/data/city_report.html

          • Dana August 18, 2017 (12:48 pm)

Wow! Those went a lot faster than he’d thought they would

  • Sonny August 18, 2017 (12:31 pm)

Wow! We just sold out of 300 pairs in 30 min! Sorry everyone! Thanks to everyone we’re meet and have a great eclipse!

    • Hannah August 18, 2017 (1:43 pm)

Thanks so much Sonny it was great to meet you and I hope you have the most amazing and safe journey! From the girl who lost her other glasses -Hannah!

      • Sonny August 18, 2017 (4:31 pm)

Thank you Hannah! Was great talking with you! Hope you find where you hid the other pair before Monday!

  • JCC August 18, 2017 (1:52 pm)

Does anyone have any extra pairs for sale?  I cannot believe that every place is sold out.

  • Marissa August 18, 2017 (2:33 pm)

There is a 5 pack by Lunt available on Amazon that can be delivered tomorrow if you have Prime. $60 (ouch!). And yes, on the NASA approved list.

  • Gary August 18, 2017 (2:45 pm)

I have 3 pair ISO Certified eclipse glasses made in USA. SELLING AS ONE UNIT  for $50.00.

    • Tarmel23 August 18, 2017 (6:19 pm)

Do you still have these? I would take them.

  • D August 18, 2017 (3:42 pm)

are you in West Seattle? how do i contact?

  • Sonny August 18, 2017 (5:31 pm)

Hello eclipse chasers! Our second delivery for today now won’t arrive until tomorrow morning so I guess we’re delaying departure until then. There was a big line today and were so surprised we sold out in 30 min!

To be fair to everyone we’re still only charging $10 cash each, first come first served. With that in mind, talk with your family, friends, and neighbors to make sure you are going to get enough since some of your people won’t be able to get there themselves. We’re not limiting number of glasses, buying a bunch for others is great, but please don’t buy to resell at a crazy price. Be there at 930 because they will go fast and this is the absolute last of the eclipse glasses we will get!

If they arrive on time we plan on selling them in the park across the street from the Alaska Junction Qfc at 42nd SW &SW Alaska at 930 am Saturday. Line starts at the bottom of the ramp, up towards the sidewalk and up the hill. Please be kind to each other and let pedestrians by on the sidewalk.

Many thanks to the West Seattle Blog and the contributions of its great community! Whether you’re traveling or staying in beautiful Seattle have a great eclipse experience! Thank you all so much!

  • Samantha August 19, 2017 (12:08 am)

Hi there. I am a kindergarten teacher in seattle at a title 1 school. I was hoping to get some glasses for my students so they can experience this on Monday. Anyone still selling or willing to donate?

    • helen August 19, 2017 (10:11 am)

Hi, I have 10 pair of kid glasses. I paid 80 dollars on amazon they are good checked them out. I am leaving for Oregon this afternoon. I live in Columbia City could meet up if you want all 10. There someone else that wanted a kid pair, but I need to sell all of them they are Lunt Solar Systems ISO 12312-2 . Looked them up on the Astronomical site. I will sell for what i paid for them 80$

  • Sonny August 19, 2017 (6:58 am)

    Tracking now says 1030. Argh!

    • Michele August 19, 2017 (9:11 am)

The eagle has landed! We are on our way there with the eclipse glasses!

  • Norma Rae August 19, 2017 (10:13 am)

    RE: Sonny

“To be fair to everyone we’re still only charging $10 cash each, first come first served. […] We’re not limiting number of glasses, buying a bunch for others is great, but please don’t buy to resell at a crazy price.”

That is hilarious, you are buying them in bulk for less than $1.50 and flipping it for $10 and asking others not do the same?

  • helen August 19, 2017 (10:36 am)

The  glasses finally came in but I need to sell all 10 or return them. They are good ISO and looked them up on safe site. They are for kids 7 to 12. There is another woman who wants some. so may be able to sell all and if you want one pair cool if I can sell the others . let me know if your still interested. I am leaving this afternoon for Oregon.

  • Sonny August 19, 2017 (10:55 am)

Haha @Norma Rae, we paid retail but we’re making a couple bucks for our trouble too. We do want these to get to our friends and neighbors in West Seattle most of all.

We’re in the Park right now and have a couple hundred left! Everyone in line got what they needed and there’s no line now.

    • Luna August 19, 2017 (11:35 am)

      what park Sonny?

  • Bill Glasner August 19, 2017 (11:04 am)

    Retail = $2.

    Sale = $10.
    Couple bucks = $2-3

    Profit = $8
By selling 400, you guys stand to make $4,000.  I hope that was enough for your time.

    • CAM August 19, 2017 (1:34 pm)

Bill, As one of the people who bought from Sonny I can say that I would prefer to pay $10 for a pair than to have had to do any of the other last minute options. The mark up (whatever it actually is) seems reasonable when you consider the 1) time you would have spent aimlessly driving from store to store searching for a pair, 2) risk involved in buying something in that much bulk, 3) costs for expedited shipping, 4) the current prices for glasses on Amazon which won’t show up until after the eclipse, 5) etc.

If anyone is wondering, I tested these out when I got home and they passed the LED light test that is recommended by the link Alice provided. They are also from one of the distributors on the certified list on that link. I don’t know if Sonny is still out there or has more to sell, but they currently seem like a reasonably safe bet to me which was a far bigger concern for me than any mark up.

      • Dani August 19, 2017 (4:56 pm)

I spent 3 hours 4 days ago driving all over to every Fred Meyer in town to get my first two pair. 3 hours, gas, wear and tear, traffic and stress, or this guy in West Seattle will text me to personally well into the evening to answer my questions and just now ultimately sold me the last of what I needed through my car window, allowing “drive thru service.”

Everyone can make their own choice on the matter, and just buy them elsewhere if that convenience isn’t worth it to you, but for me the choice was obvious.

Considering he bought them retail and paid for overnight shipping, and all the effort arranging/coordinating, time working on this and choosing not to up the price as some of the retail stores mentioned on this chain did, well, sounds pretty fair to me. He undercut Amazon by $30 a pair, for hecks sake.

I also really appreciate that he wanted to sell to those who would enjoy them instead of selling them to people who would jack the price up on Craigslist. I thought that was nice. I actually heard him asking a lot of questions of a guy that was trying to buy a bunch, and you could tell he wasn’t automatically going to make the sale.

Thank you, Sonny! The others I talked to really enjoyed meeting you. Everyone was extremely happy. We appreciate it!!

  • Sonny August 19, 2017 (12:05 pm)

We moved across the street to the shade by the Qfc. Beautiful day but that sun is intense!

We still have a couple hundred left as of right now.

    • Christoph August 19, 2017 (1:39 pm)

      Still there?

  • Sophia August 19, 2017 (12:10 pm)

Sonny, Are you still selling in west Seattle?

  • Lynn August 19, 2017 (12:17 pm)

Does anyone have one extra pair? I’m trying to help an elderly lady next door get one. Thank you! 😊

  • Tina August 19, 2017 (12:54 pm)

  • Sonny August 19, 2017 (1:24 pm)

    • Brooke August 19, 2017 (1:57 pm)

      • Dani August 19, 2017 (2:10 pm)

I had to buy a 10 pack but only needed 3 pairs. I’ve got 7 left for $15 each. These are kids glasses but I’ve had a couple different adults try them, on larger faces the ears might be a little tight.

Email me at elsiej.1587@gmail.com and we can arrange to meet up in WS tomorrow (Sunday).

    • JK August 19, 2017 (10:40 pm)

      Hey Elspeth,

      I work at the QFC.

You have such a unique name I can’t imagine this isn’t the same person.

The Hawaiian shirt guy/glasses guy held your glasses for you until after your agreed time of arrival?? Too bad you bought them somewhere else. He waited for you and then left message with us that he was still holding them for you until the next day.

Just so you know, since he seemed like a nice guy.

      • Elspeth August 19, 2017 (11:39 pm)

That was me, I had tried to get some Thursday but he wasn’t selling any more so I asked to reserve some for Friday. I came Friday but he wasn’t there and then he posted on the blog that he was all sold out. We must have missed each other somehow :(

If anyone’s still looking I have a few pairs left that aren’t spoken for.

        • Karen August 20, 2017 (8:10 am)

          Hi Elspeth.
