About all those sirens: Small brush fire near SW Teen Life Center

A big initial response is now being downsized for a reported brush fire near Southwest Teen Life Center/SW Pool at 28th SW/SW Thistle. The fire report is concurrent with a fireworks report to which police were dispatched. It’s the third brush fire reported in West Seattle in about an hour – firefighters also have responded to reports in High Point and South Admiral.

I called it in. The firework landed in the small stand of trees between the parking lot and the street. There were several big booms and then a car took off down 28th. It was a black (I think) sports car with its stereo booming. They came back down Thistle a few minutes later to take a look before heading towards Delridge.

The flames initially were pretty intense, and since there are some decent-sized trees in that space, I was worried it might get big fast. But they put it out pretty quickly.

Thanks for the update. I was going to head that way but then they started dismissing units and I decided just to at least make this note about it, since the initial multiple-unit dispatch was pretty loud (could hear it here, not far west). – TR

Can anyone tell me why I keep hearing what sounds like a train horn? It’s been going on for the last 15 minutes, my boyfriend and I thought it was a train until we realized none go through west Seattle that we know of. Is it the sirens of this? I’m over by 42nd so pretty far from the fires…

Yes, you can hear train horns just about anywhere in West Seattle. There are two main source areas – by the low bridge and Nucor, and along West Marginal Way. We are over Lincoln Park and I can hear them most nights.

@Erica – could it have been a ship horn? Those can go on for a long time when a giant container ship is concerned that a small ship up ahead is in danger of crossing their path.

Welp — I’ve lived here for almost 4 years and never knew that so now I feel dumb ;) I was thinking that too CM, we live by the Vashon ferry port. It was driving me crazy! First time I’ve heard it. Thanks WSB / CM :)

I live just up the hill from Nucor, etc, in Admiral, and there were some really long train whistles last night…long enough to make me notice. I grew up  in coal country in PA (a long time ago, but that’s another story), and I have never really minded them here…I find them kinda comforting

Fireworks were going off for an hour before I heard the fire truck roll into high point and the culprit just moved a block down the street from Bataan where SFD was responding to Morgan (I think but it was echoing) and continued to light them while SFD was here! They weren’t the kind of fireworks that make pretty it was just repeated firecrackers. At 11:30pm. When I was trying to sleep because it’s a work night for crying out loud.

ERICA- as WSB stated- can hear train horns almost all the time- maybe it has something to do with acoustics- what direction the wind is coming from as to how loudly?? Anyway we have lived 60+ years here- from  N Admiral area to Morgan Junction & love the sound.

I like the sound too! I just had never heard it before and it was going for almost an hour on and off so we were puzzled, and thought it was a siren die to fireworks :)

Someone was blowing a vuvuzella in Fauntleroy last night.  That is what you heard.

Sometimes I’ve also heard sea lions, kind of interesting sounds of the city!

Sorry, comment time is over.
