UPDATE: Water break brings Seattle FD to Arrowhead Gardens

5:21 PM: Just checked out the big Seattle Fire response at senior-housing complex Arrowhead Gardens in southeast West Seattle. No fire; the call is logged as a “water job/major.” On scene, a building manager told us some kind of pipe break flooded the parking garage with about an inch of water. They’re there to pump it out and help sleuth the source.

5:59 PM: SFD says via Twitter that eight housing units at the complex have been evacuated because of this.

I’d check again if I were you.

They haven’t even started repairing the water main more than 14 hours later.  And power may go out to the seniors, many of whom depend on oxygen, not to mention electricity just to use the elevators to get out of the building.

According to my parents who live at Arrowhead Gardens, they have just started tearing up the driveway. There is no estimated time as to when their water will be back on.   These are elderly people who need water access. Not to mention a working toilet. Gross.

The residents there are being told it will be 2 days before they have running water again. This is ridiculous as it is a Senior Housing Building!!!

Obviously that wasn’t true Amber.   I live there.  We were told that the DRIVEWAY wouldn’t be ready for 2 to 3 days.  The water would be on by midnight on the 20th, and it was back on by about 3pm.

Unfortunately as a completely independent living building there is ZERO responsibility on SHAG to provide back up water or electricity. If it were an Assisted Living OR Independent Living that offers Assisted Living they would have to have a 3 day water supply for all residents and generator large enough to operate a few plugs for medical equipment that requires electricity,

That said a former Assisted Living I worked for a few years ago felt the water in the back of the toilet tank to be sufficient enough and clean enough to be considered the required 3 days water and the state agreed….Ewe!

I am following up on this right now. SPU confirms that the break is not in one of their lines so the repairs are up to SHAG/AG.

I’ll be writing a separate followup momentarily. A SHAG spokesperson says the water’s supposed to be back on any minute now if it’s not already.

It is unfortunate that accidents/emergencies happen.  The American Red Cross public announcements are made all the time.  It’s our personal responsibility to be prepared with a three to seven day emergency supply kit.

water, prescriptions, cash, flash lights, etc.

truely feel for seniors having to experience this and hope they have or will makesnd/or buy an emergency supply kit.

Sorry, comment time is over.
