TRAFFIC ALERT: Tree down on West Marginal Way

Thanks to Deborah for the photo – the tree is down across West Marginal Way just north of Highland Park Way. SDOT is aware, per this tweet.

that’s an odd thing to see on a warm summer day. wonder what happened?

My guess is that with all the rain we have had and now the warm weather, the tree leafed out, grew and overextended itself towards the street. We had a large branch of a tree come down on a warm, still day.  Transpiration increases greatly in warm weather, so maybe it is the weight of the water.

SDOT’s tweet indicated the cross street was Edmunds but based on the Lafarge stack being in view, I think it is just a bit south of Puget Way.

Well I can tell you what happend. Me and my two boys and I were driving home from watching the WSLL Allstar game from Bar S. We were going the speed limit when all of a sudden I saw a tree deviate from the tree line. I realized that it was falling and I hit my breaks as hard as I could to the point they screeched and the side branch of the tree fell on top of the hood of my car. We were the hood away from the main trunk being on the car. My fight or flight response kicked in and I pulled my car out from under the tree and whipped around to the other side of the street scared and just wanting to get out of there. Then all of a sudden cars started showing up and lots of people got out of their cars helping clear branches enough to use one lane of the road. A lady got out of her car to check on us as I was crying inside the car as I was coming to reality that the tree almost killed us. I didn’t stay for the police cause I wanted to get me and my boys home. I will be filing a claim with the city of Seattle and we need the city to look after our old trees so they don’t kill anyone because that tree almost took us out.

Thank you everyone who was there, because I was there moments before you all got there and it was very scary.

Sorry, comment time is over.
