HIGHWAY 99/VIADUCT CLOSURE: Sunday marathon reminder

In case you missed the alert in our daily traffic coverage – here’s another reminder, just in from WSDOT, about this Sunday’s NB Highway 99/Alaskan Way Viaduct closure:

The 2017 Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon will close northbound SR 99 through downtown Seattle on Sunday, June 18. Northbound SR 99 will be closed from South Hudson Street to Halladay Street between approximately 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Although the marathon is scheduled to last until 3 p.m., the Seattle Department of Transportation is planning to reopen SR 99 and the Alaskan Way Viaduct as early as possible once the runners have passed this part of the course. Please refer to the event website for more specific information on other road closures and parking restrictions related to the event.

Here’s a map showing the closure zone, from south of West Seattle to north of downtown.

That’s an interesting comment from WSDOT to say that they’ll open 99 as soon as runners clear it.  With the exception of the last quarter mile or so, the last 6 miles of the marathon take place on the viaduct/99.  If there are stragglers finishing right up to the 3:00 cutoff time, they’ll be on 99 until just a few minutes prior to that.

STILL don’t know why folks need to destroy traffic throughout the city just to run a marathon.  It’s like they assume all the parks are closed and runners are banned from the sidewalks.  You wanna run 26 miles and change?  Run around Greenlake 9 times.  Boom.  And no one’s inconvenienced.  At least it’s on a Sunday this year, so I don’t have to deal with it.

In this case, part of the deal is that bands are stationed along the course. Nine laps of Green Lake likely wouldn’t work quite the same way. Anyway, please also note that the Torchlight Run is back at Seafair this year (after taking last year off) and that will close Highway 99 for a while on Saturday night, July 29th. http://www.seafair.com/events/2017/seafair-torchlight-run

Sorry, comment time is over.
