Lowman Beach seawall’s future: May 31st meeting details

In our coverage of the most-recent Morgan Community Association meeting, we mentioned MoCA announcing that the city was working on a May 31st meeting about the ongoing Lowman Beach seawall issue – it’s damaged and needs to be either replaced or removed. MoCA board member Cindi Barker sends word that the city has set the time and location – 6:30-7:30 pm May 31st at The Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California SW). The details are on the Lowman Beach Park webpage, and indicate that the city is likely to remove the seawall – as was done with one to the south years ago – and keep the tennis court. See the official meeting flyer here.

I’m encouraged the city is *likely* to remove the seawall. The science is very clear that bulkhead-type seawalls are a real impediment to a healthy beach and natural systems. I’m now forgetting her name and even the name of her organization, but a woman with a WA State salmon restoration reprogram gave a great talk at C&P coffee recently (in association with Whale Tails) about the proper restoration of salmon habitat. Beaches are a huge part of the effort to help the salmon, so I would have a real problem if the science were ignored in favor of a seawall. Sure, they’ll have to play nice with the neighbors to the north so as not to damage their property, but I think a naturally sloping beach from the tennis courts on down would be a lovely sight, indeed. Fingers crossed the city does the right thing.

Sorry, comment time is over.
