WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Police search in East Admiral

Thanks for the tips – we just found out what the police search in East Admiral is about. We caught up with the victim near 38th and Stevens and this is what he told us: He went out to his car to go pick up his child, and discovered a man in the car. He told the man he was calling police, and tried to hold onto him in the meantime, but the man pulled out a gun, and then ran. Police including K-9 have been searching all around the area, but no arrests yet. The intruder was described as white, male, 5-10, wearing a newsboy-style cap, armed with a small semi-automatic pistol.

P.S. We’ve been mentioning lately that tips are more important than ever because less information is emerging on the scanner, and this was exactly one such case. We heard that police were setting up “containment” for something – which generally means something fairly serious – but did not hear the locations and so until two people texted us with word of police sightings, we had no idea where to look. So, thank you – 206-293-6302, text or voice, any time.

A police car sat in the middle of the intersection of Belvidere and Hinds for a few minutes with its lights flashing (no siren). It then continued east on Hinds and turned left to go north on 37th. My son is the one who noticed the police car lights out his window. He wanted me to go out ask him why he was there. I told him that something must be going on near by and that he was waiting it out. Thank you for sharing this. Scary knowing this was so close to home. (He also asked me to check the blog and see if anything was on here.)

Yes, that would have been part of “containment” – placing police at points around the perimeter of the search, which can sometimes range for many blocks. I don’t know if we’ll hear anything more tonight.

The police were unable to locate the suspect tonight.  They think he might have gone over the embankment on Hanford.  They did recover a few items left by the prowler in our car.  Sadly I didn’t get to him before he punched out our ignition.

I saw an officer sitting with lights on, on the downhill side of Admiral Way around 10pm. Might have been part of the containment.

oh jeez; this must have happened just minutes before I got home to Belvidere and Hinds, and was blissfully walking slowly out in the nice warm evening on that exact corner without any awareness of a potential person with a gun nearby

I tell ya, I live on Stevens near 38th and if I don’t lock my car at night, there is a 100% chance it will get pillaged.  I don’t keep ANYTHING in there.  Now hearing about someone with a gun?  That’s disturbing.  Glad this victim is okay.

Two officers with the K-9 were actively searching through our backyard and our neighbors’ yards as well, to no avail. Spooked the heck out of my wife and me! Big kudos to them for wandering through the dark around corners and in hidden spots looking for an armed person.

I remember seeing a picture of guy on the internet matching that description (he was in a photo stealing packages on someone’s WS front porch), but I don’t know where I saw the picture. Anyone?

He had the hat they described too.

We live near Hinds street. Since we were out, our neighbor watched for our coming home, and texted me as we pulled into our driveway. “Get in your house!”  and gave us the rundown. Glad AdmiralDad and family are fine. Do wish they had caught the guy; it sure wasn’t for lack of trying.  Heading east into the woods above Admiral would make capturing him awfully difficult.  Even with the K-9’s.

    Is this your guy?  https://westseattleblog.com/2015/12/videophoto-recognize-these-west-seattle-package-thieves/

He must have left the Admiral greenbelt area if he went that way.  The K9s would have made quick work of him if he stayed.  Trails in that area lead south to where 35th dead ends or east to Admiral.  I once caught 4 kids with bb guns who shot my car window out while I was driving down Admiral.  They  lived at the dead end area of 35th.  Of course nothing ever happened to the kids (all 15-16 years old) despite police meeting them at the trail.

Sorry, comment time is over.
