CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Police need your help finding boathouse-burglary suspect Paul Story

Just tweeted by Seattle Police: The photo at right of Paul D. Story. We first reported one week ago today that Story had been charged in connection with the March 22nd boathouse burglary along the Duwamish River, and that a $100,000 warrant was out for his arrest. As you might recall, he was taken into custody after jumping into the river, swimming under the boathouse, and being pulled out of the water on the brink of hypothermia. He went to the hospital, then to jail, but was released on his own recognizance when charges weren’t filed in time to keep him in. When arrested, he gave an Admiral address at which his family says he lives with them “on and off.” If you see him or know where he might be, call 911.

…He went to the hospital, then to jail, but was released on his own recognizancewhen charges weren’t filed in time to keep him in…

    And whose fault is that?

Prosecutors said police had not referred the case. There is a relatively small window to “rush-file” charges – usually about three days – and it doesn’t happen in every case. Maybe one of our commenters with justice-system experience can shine some light, but I don’t know exactly what the process is or who makes the decision on rush-filing – if police and prosecutors confer, or what. Story was in a little longer because he was not booked into jail, but instead taken to the hospital, for starters – he was released five days after the March 22nd incident. (one of our followups linked above was from the night we noticed he had been released).

The charges were not initially filed because the police assigned the case to a detective that was on vacation. The 72 hour window to get it to the prosecutor expired so they released him despite his long and violent arrest record. The police representative admitted the mistake on KIRO radio and called it a “teaching moment.” I hope they can catch him (again.) Thanks WSB for publishing the photo so we can all keep an eye out.

A “teaching moment” that could result in dire consequences if this criminal is not found quickly.

Why bother keeping your eye out? Let the authorities find him.

They assigned the case to a detective who was on vacation?!?!?!

    hahahahahahahaha

you literally cannot make this incompetence up…

Quick, act surprised! Releasing the guy who voluntarily spent almost an hour in the cold cold waters to evade and expecting him to check in?

Where does our tax dollars go?

Too easy.. his Admiral area family does or will know where he is. Hope they’re not protecting him.

Yet police continue to wrongly arrest victims of DV rather than actually arrest the lying perpetrator who sits on their community policing board….go figure. Justice is cruel and unattainable unless you have money to build the police precinct…..

Attention all SPD Detectives.  Outlook (and just about every other email program) has a feature called Out of Office Message.  Maybe try using it!    You can actually tell your coworkers when you are on vacation so that they don’t refer cases to you during that time!    And if you want, you can also set your out of office message from your phone if you forget to do it from your PC before you leave on vacation.   For crying out loud…  And maybe you could update your voicemail message too while you’re at it.

This should be standard operating procedure.   You are in the public safety business afterall.
