SIDEWALKS ON THE WAY: 3 projects in West Seattle this year

Three stretches of West Seattle streets are due for new sidewalks this year, as shown on the map above, made public as Mayor Murray spotlighted the city’s updated Pedestrian Master Plan today.

*35th SW in Arbor Heights between 100th and 106th adds to the sidewalks built north of there 5 years ago

*Arbor Heights also will get a block of sidewalk along SW 104th between 35th and 36th, just east of AH Elementary

*In Delridge, sidewalks are on the way to SW Orchard between Myrtle and Dumar

Today’s full announcement says the mayor is sending the plan to City Council later this week. If you’d like to look into the future to see where future work might be focused, the “priority investment network” map for our area starts on page 60 of the full Pedestrian Master Plan.

Wow. Who is the rep for district 5?

    • Look it up before commenting, please March 20, 2017 (6:01 pm)

Most of district five does not have any sidewalks at all, most of the rest of the city does.

Most of Arbor Heights doesn’t have sidewalks either, FYI.

Most of Arbor Heights doesn’t have as much traffic as a lot of the streets in District 5. Other than 35th and 106th, we really aren’t on the way to anywhere.

Having grown up in Arbor Heights, I always called it “Arbor Heights: Where the Sidewalk Ends.” :)

The section of Orchard street between Myrtle and Dumar is only about 350 feet and has a sidewalk on one side. Meanwhile, that section of road has a pothole the size of a bathtub.

Not just 1 bathtub size pothole, but 2! One for each direction of travel.  Looks like one of them has been filled, but the other has not. We were on the verge of getting hit head on by someone driving around it this morning, but luckily they corrected in time.

Just an FYI on that project: it is not really a “sidewalk” project but rather an intersection realignment project. The project will take what is a huge expanse of asphalt and define the intersection of Myrtle & 18th Ave SW and then the intersection of 18th Ave SW and Dumar. It’ll be greatly appreciated by me at least.

Sorry, the map is the only info that was provided with the mayoral news release, I looked for more info … if we can find additional details today we’ll add them for the record.

Sorry Tracy! I know it’s a city thing and not a WSB thing! :-)

thanks for the clarification Mike. Yes, sounds like something that intersection/ area really does need. Good to hear.

The sides walks they did on 35 between 97th and 100th were horrible. The city didn’t pipe the drainage ditches, and the sidewalks ziz zag all over the place. I feel like I am taking my own life in my hands when I walk on certain stretches of it. Parts of the sidewalk are just a few feet of the road that is buzzing with speeding traffic.

I couldn’t agree more.  They look like the most half-hearted (I’d use another term) project I’ve ever seen.  They run all over the place, the street doesn’t actually connect to them, there are no curbs.  I hope the new sidewalks actually function like a completed street with curbs and without a drainage ditch to avoid.

The sidewalk between 97th and 100th is a HUGE improvement over the way things were before it was built.  I use it all of the time.

Sorry, comment time is over.
