A Bazillion cop cars went speeding past my apt Bldg… flipped on the Scanner to find out what was going on… Scary. People are crazy these days… I don’t feel bad about not going out much anymore.. I am safer at home.
Hope the person will be ok.

  • Tami March 18, 2017 (10:47 pm)

Was that boom gunshots or something else?  Sirens started immediately afterwards.

    • Monique March 18, 2017 (10:54 pm)

I think the boom come from our neighborhood at 45th and Brandon. Car alarms went off here. Probably unrelated M-80. Where are you?

    • Paul March 18, 2017 (10:54 pm)

Sounded like fireworks to me. But then again, I thought a shooting in my alley the other week was someone knocking at my door.

  • JunctionMama March 18, 2017 (10:51 pm)

I live right near there and could’ve sworn i heard two gunshots.

  • Sue H March 18, 2017 (10:54 pm)

OMG, *this* is what I just walked thru?! Coming home from ArtsWest on foot and a group of people were screaming and beating the shit out of each other alongside QFC. I didn’t know what was going on but got the hell out of there fast because it looked like something that had the potential to go bad.

  • Ilovebears March 18, 2017 (10:56 pm)

Also heard loud boom and then immediately following were the sirens. Located on 48th and Oregon.

    • WSB March 18, 2017 (10:58 pm)

Don’t know what the booms were. Also still waiting to hear from our crew regarding circumstances of the reported stabbing. The scanner has been useless because there are various other incidents around the city, busy Saturday night.

  • Texas girl March 18, 2017 (11:00 pm)

I’m at 42nd & Hudson and heard a loud boom as well – enough to wake and startle my cat and for me to open a window to see if something exploded. That seems too far away and too loud for just gun shots

    • WSB March 18, 2017 (11:07 pm)

I hope everyone who heard this boom called it in to 911. We’ve gotten all the info we’re going to get on the stabbing incident; didn’t hear any dispatches for the booms – there were a couple reported last night in Highland Park (and heard as far away as South Park), too.

  • Dave March 18, 2017 (11:05 pm)

There are a lot of great people in WS. I am glad they way outnumber the bad apples. Still, the crime I have read about and even witnessed over the past 25 years is very disturbing and just seems so out of place here.

    • Mike March 19, 2017 (8:05 am)

These are not bad apples, these are people without regard for the life of anyone else.

      • Rider March 20, 2017 (7:59 am)

        Hypocrite

  • wssz March 18, 2017 (11:09 pm)

I’m at 49th and Hudson and heard it too. Sounded like a single blast from fireworks.  Very glad to be home tonight.

Sue H. — Really glad you are okay!

  • Monique March 18, 2017 (11:18 pm)

Hmmm, this is a wide spread boom! Airplane?! I only say that because I had a sonic boom wake me and my neighborhood when I was s kid. We lived in Highland Park. Boeing??

  • Tami March 18, 2017 (11:26 pm)

I’m at 46th and Juneau. Seems now boom unrelated to stabbing but sirens happened immediately after so weird. Be safe out there neighbors.

    • Monique March 18, 2017 (11:32 pm)

Was extremely timely. Did you have any alarms go off? Trying to gauge magnitude. It felt like it was literally in the intersection of 45th and Brandon as I drove by. Car alarms went off at that intersection.

  • WestSeattlePerson March 18, 2017 (11:44 pm)

I heard a single loud boom as well all the way over in Gatewood. Possibly a firework?

  • Jon March 19, 2017 (1:02 am)

There really needs to be a stationary patrol in the Junction between popular bar hours (9PM-2:30AM). The amount of drag racing and rowdiness is astounding.

Stay safe out there. Be safe and protect yourself; especially if you’re working during those hours and walking home.

    • Sue H March 19, 2017 (1:48 am)

I would agree. When I started walking home from the Junction I had the all-ways walk sign, but 2 cars at the NB light were revving their engines, bucking their cars, and yelling to each other. I waited for the next cycle because I was afraid they were going to blow thru the light and I’d get hit. They did wait for the green and did race off very quickly. Then a block later I ran into the fighting I mentioned above. I felt safer walking the streets of NYC than I do in the Junction some nights.

  • Alki Resident March 19, 2017 (7:55 am)

That station was just robbed a couple of weeks ago. No this stabbing. I’ve decided as of a couple of months ago, I’m no longer going to convenience stores as it’s getting too risky to get caught in the middle of something real bad.

    • Rider March 20, 2017 (8:01 am)

      No slurpees for you then!

  • Heather March 19, 2017 (9:25 am)

I called in 3 911 calls last week, including last night, of people partying outside my house on Fauntleroy. One operater told me it’s not a crime to be in your car. Last night they were so loud my house was thumping along with their music. Shortly after that I hurt the loud bang, and then, apparently all of this happened up the street.

Earlier this week I was flipped off as I was crossing the crosswalk by a red light runner.  It’s only going to get worse with the high density buildings going up.  I feel bad to say but, thinking it may be time to get out before it gets to that point

  • JRR March 19, 2017 (9:48 am)

Remember: violent crime is actually way down from its peak in the ’70s. We hear about more things more quickly because of the wonderful, committed work of journalists and the fast moving way news travels. So please don’t stay in your house. It’s almost spring!

    • Duwamesque March 19, 2017 (3:47 pm)

This! Violence grips the local headlines but West Seattle is overall a very safe place to live and violent crime levels are at historic lows. Don’t hide under your sofas in fear!

    • Krista March 19, 2017 (8:44 pm)

Yes, social media makes it seem worse but people are far safer than during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. There is no reason to be afraid, only cautious.

  • WS Guy March 19, 2017 (10:40 am)

We need a Mayor and Council that wants to fight crime and lower taxes.

It used to be a joke that every politician would promise that.  Now it would seem like a brand new idea.

  • Dylan March 19, 2017 (11:21 am)

The boom sounded very close to me at 44th and Dawson.  Sounded like a firework to me. No cause for concern.

  • Elle Nell March 19, 2017 (11:31 am)

You know it’s not necessarily the crime that is ruining this city, it has always existed… but it’s this “outside” mentality of “I don’t give a f$&@ about you or anything else!” Seattle is and always will be a conscious and considerate city… not saying always friendly but we do care. I’m definitely getting less tolerant of this behavior and I have moved into calling people out. It’s not always pleasant but I’ll be damned if I’ll just turn the other cheek… and I’m NOT saying stoping criminal activity, I’m talking of everyday inconsiderate individual behavior, when presenting to me directly. (Grocery stores, passerbys that bump, cheaters… etc) And one last thing, I drive to lead by example. (Let people in, one car distance, WAVE for a thank you) you know how we do it here!! 😉

  • aa March 19, 2017 (11:35 am)

Dave- it seems so out of place here? Has your head been in the sand these past 25 years that you speak of?  If not here, are there places you think crime belongs? Sometimes I get annoyed by the people in WS who think their area should live untouched by population growth and all that follows- construction, traffic, crime, densely populated areas. You are not an island! It does get in over the bridge. No, I’m not saying we can’t help direct the growth, I just wish naïve folks would wake up and face the fact that they live in an urban area not a sweet little village.

    • WSB March 19, 2017 (11:57 am)

      Please note a few things:

Crime IS down, citywide. We included that in a recent Crime Watch, when the SeaStat report came out. We also include police updates in our coverage of every community meeting at which the SW Precinct is represented, usually a few per week. Also, we have a tremendously low rate of violent crime in our area. Yes, my usual disclaimer, even ONE instance is too many. But does anyone remember 1993? Yikes.

We report crime on WSB, along with many other types of news and information, because it’s important. But that doesn’t mean it’s raging out of control. And if you have questions/complaints/kudos/whatever for police, please bring them to the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting on Tuesday night (7 pm at the precinct). No scheduled guest yet and that means extra time for those conversations.

And Mama L, thank you. Civility can be contagious. It’s an important part of livability. – TR

AA — West Seattle used to be an urban oasis where familes lived in peace, sent their kids to school without worry and didn’t fear being out after dark.  Bad policians, bad city management, bad decisions by the bad politicians to over develop areas without developing infrastructure first or putting caps on the over-development have adversely affected WS and all other urban areas over the past 30 years. There’s a difference between good-natured rowdiness and criminal behavior…the later is attracted to over-developed urban areas…more targets.

    • DH March 19, 2017 (1:04 pm)

      @aa. Very much agreed!

Ah, the good old days. When domestic violence was a family issue and redlining kept WS quiet./s

    • West Seattle since 1979 March 20, 2017 (12:24 pm)

AA, yes! It’s sad that crime has to happen at all, of course, but it does and it happens everywhere, unfortunately, even in small towns.  And I don’t think we can say it’s “out of place” anywhere, unless we say it’s out of place everywhere.

Sorry, comment time is over.
