TRASH/RECYCLING DELAYED ALL WEEK: In case you missed this news

(TUESDAY UPDATE: Monday residential customers here will NOT get pickup this week after all)

ORIGINAL MONDAY ANNOUNCEMENT: In case you missed this in our snow updates earlier today, we’re publishing the full announcement separately, since this will affect people long after the snow has melted: Since Seattle Public Utilities couldn’t get trucks out this morning, trash/recycling/etc. pickup will be delayed one day ALL WEEK. Here’s the full announcement:

Due to icy road conditions, there will be no residential or commercial garbage, recycling or food/yard waste pickup in Seattle today—Monday. Contractors will attempt to serve priority commercial locations this afternoon.

Weather and road conditions permitting, garbage, recycling, and food/yard waste service will resume Tuesday, on a revised schedule — with customers scheduled for pickup today (Monday) collected Tuesday. All remaining residential services will be delayed one day this week.

If your materials are not picked up by the end of the following day, please put them out on your next regularly scheduled pickup day. Customers missed this week will be allowed to set out double their normal amount of garbage, recycling and yard waste at no additional charge, on their next scheduled collection day. For service updates, please check seattle.gov/util. Follow SPU on Twitter.

TUESDAY UPDATE: Published here.

huh. north seattle has about zero snow on the roads, even side streets.

Many times a service outage has as much to do with the people who are unable to get to work as the area that’s getting the service revision.  They can’t run buses or pick up trash is there’s no one to drive the vehicle.

Also – and this has happened in the past with schools – if part of the service area is close to impassable, they can’t just serve part of it and try to juggle part of the schedule – at some point, there’s a tipping point, and they say “OK, we’re sliding everyone a day.” Since we haven’t had a snow day like this in years, memories have lapsed, but Seattle Public Utilities in particular had trouble in the 2008 snow, and yet worked mightily to get information out and get service restored. Those were the early days of social media so government agencies had very little means of direct communication, and with hilly WS being particularly hard-hit, they even sent communicators out here to interview with us directly. That was the foundation of a decent communication relationship we’ve had with SPU ever since, continuing through the brown-water woes, and more. Datapoint … TR

Thanks for this update! I didn’t hear it anywhere else – and it was nice to not have to slog the heavy garbage and recycle up the icy driveway last night. :)

Sorry, comment time is over.
