UPDATE: Teen turns up in ER after shooting – apparently accidental – here

4:14 PM MONDAY: Just found this while going through police reports looking for the newest ones published with narratives:

A 17-year-old girl showed up in a hospital emergency room on Saturday afternoon with a gunshot wound. East Precinct police were dispatched. They talked to the victim’s boyfriend, who they found “pacing outside the emergency room.” The report says he told them it happened in his car at 27th SW and SW Cambridge [map]. He and his girlfriend were in the car with friends of his; one friend, he said, had a gun and while saying “something similar to ‘we’re going to be brothers for life’,” racked the slide on his pistol, and it fired, going through the front passenger seat and through the girl’s chest. They drove to the hospital. Police talked to the girl just before she was taken into surgery and reported that “she made statements consistent with the gunshot being accidental.” They found a bullet hole, bullet, and blood in the car, which was impounded. Police later met with the man whose gun fired; he was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault.

ADDED 9:54 AM TUESDAY: We now have the probable-cause document from the 18-year-old suspect’s bail hearing Monday afternoon. He is a Rainier Valley resident and was released on personal recognizance. The document says that he told police a different story about the gunshot – that he got into the car, noticed a gun on the floor, picked it up with the intent of throwing it out the window, and that, he said, was when it went off. He said he then gave it to his brother, who also was in the car, and told him to get rid of it, adding that he doesn’t know what happened to the gun. He has no criminal record in online statewide files.

It seems like way too many gunshot victims get driven to the hospital, a fire station or Providence Mount St. Vincent. Beyond “do not play with guns” maybe we need to tell kids, that if they get shot or shoot someone, to get to a safe place and call 911. There are two fire stations less than two miles away and one of the vehicles could easily have been nearby. The girl is lucky to have lived long enough to get to the hospital.

Mount Saint Vincent isn’t a hospital. You can’t rely on the fire station, they might be out on a call. But when you’re a gang member, you kinda make your own plan. They could’ve really gotten spooked and dumped her in an alley so I guess it’s good they cared enough to hospitalize her.

I must not have been clear because you missed my point. They should not have moved from where they were because they weren’t in further danger. Calling 911 would have brought aid from one of the two nearby fire stations. The average life-support response time in Seattle is under 4 minutes.  https://www.seattle.gov/fire/statistics/runTimes/dept_responseTimes.htm

No, Mount St. Vincent isn’t a hospital so it is one of the worst places you could take someone. But it has been done. https://westseattleblog.com/2012/01/shooting-in-morgan-junction-one-arrest/

No, you shouldn’t drive to a fire station as they might be out on a call. But it has been done.  https://westseattleblog.com/2016/12/assault-with-weapons-response-in-sunrise-heights/

It was about a twenty-minute drive to Harborview from where they were, assuming they knew where to go, did not get lost and did not get stuck in traffic. That is fifteen additional minutes without any medical support, assuming SFD would have been there in five minutes. And when they arrived at Harborview, nobody was expecting them.

Yes, they could have dumped her. She also could have died on the way to finding medical help. Frankly, it would have been better if they did leave her, provided they called in first.

I didn’t miss your point at all. These kids were near Westwood in a car. Nowhere near Mount St. Vincent, and who knows if they were aware of firehouse locations. Being scared and adrenaline running, they should’ve called to have aid meet them somewhere but they didn’t. Hopefully the gunman has learned from this, and hopefully many charges will nail him because of this. But he’s still going to be a thug and mess up in the future.

I know where they were. I only mentioned MSV because people have mistaken it for a hospital. People should know that they should allow help to come to them.

So hard to read these stories. I cannot imagine what parents go thru every time their child leaves the house. Of course we hope the person will recover. But why is she hanging out with friends who have guns? Teenagers!! You’re not even old enough to vote. Barely old enough to have a driver’s license let alone messing around with lethal weapons. This is a sad sad story.

Just stupid.  Trying to live that MTV “thug” life.

“Yeah,  I got a gun!  I’m hard”.  No you’re stupid.  Why the hell are you racking the slide of a gun while spouting off some stupid “brothers for life” platitude?!  Life ain’t a movie.  Charge and convict this moron with a felony so he’s not allowed to own a gun again,  though unfortunately,  he was most likely not legally carrying anyway

  • Seattlite January 9, 2017 (8:50 pm)

I hope the girl will pull through.  The gun is probably stolen like most of the guns that gangs use.  If these kids aren’t too far gone in their style of life, maybe this tragedy can be a turning point to get away from the gang life and all of the grief that goes with it.

What other speculations you got in that satchel full crystal balls over there?

      • Elle Nell January 10, 2017 (7:57 am)

Well, one could only speculate the idiosyncrasies that may have occurred… since this was one super dumb incident! Maybe you just woke on the wrong side…Brian

I must have missed the part where the story said these were all gang members.

    • WSB January 10, 2017 (9:40 am)

The police report explicitly says it’s not a gang case. Also, I have some additional information from yesterday’s bail hearing – since, as noted, I only found out about this by happening onto a report in the system (and it’s unusual for a narrative to be publicly posted so soon – Saturday case on Monday), I wasn’t able to get that info until this morning. Adding to the story shortly. – TR

When they decided to say ” brothers for life”. It’s a gang term not a Boy Scout saying.

      • Revolter January 10, 2017 (4:40 pm)

        How do you know that?

  • Peter January 10, 2017 (9:45 am)

There is no such thing as a accidental shooting.

Someone loaded that gun, carried it with them, took it out, took the safety off, pointed it, and pulled the trigger. That requires an intentional act by a human at every step.

It is impossible for any shooting to ever be “accidental.” All shootings are 100% intentional. “Accidental shooting” is just a lie sociopaths tell to clever their assets after the intentionally fire a gun.

    • newnative January 10, 2017 (11:39 am)

Actually, you are wrong.  There are accidents.  Guns also go off when mishandled, which is what this particular story points to.  I really don’t understand why there are so many people here adding elements to the story that are not part of it.

    • Chaff January 14, 2017 (10:57 pm)

      HUH???

  • Ace20604 January 10, 2017 (9:47 am)

What gang are they from, guess I must have missed something….These 3 young adults will all have a difficult time ahead and even harder time if anything good shall rise from this. My thoughts and prayers are wishing healing to all those around this.

  • WSalive January 10, 2017 (11:05 am)

Well, this second, totally contradictory story, is far more believable..

He noticed a strange gun in his car, so he decided he was going to pick it up and throw it out the window..? Then, after accidentally shooting his girlfriend with the unknown gun, he thought it best to have his brother dispose of it. Of course he doesn’t know what became of it..

    • WSB January 10, 2017 (11:27 am)

The person arrested for assault is not the victim’s boyfriend. He was in the driver’s seat; she was in the front passenger seat; the two people we now know to be brothers were in the back seat, according to the probable-cause document.

  • Marty January 10, 2017 (11:49 am)

I sure people riding in my car don’t decide on their own to throw my gun out the window. LOL!

  • waikikigirl January 10, 2017 (11:50 am)

Yes that is exactly the same thing I would think if I got into a car and saw a gun laying on the floor… I should throw it out the window.  NOT!

OMG how do these people think of stories like that to tell the police, do they really think they would believe them?!

I would like to say more but I know it’d be rejected.

  • Double Dub Resident January 11, 2017 (7:41 am)

That story update has to be one of the stupidest lamest BS stories I’ve heard. There’s some random gun in the back of the car,  so he just decides to throw it out the window and it happens to go off.  Which with modern center striker polymer gun means he would literally have to pull the trigger for it to go off.  Then gives it to his brother to get rid of {after shooting the girl) and doesn’t know what happened to it,  even though his brother supposedly “dealt with it”.  Yeah right

    • Alan January 11, 2017 (12:33 pm)

The excuse is very similar to the stolen car excuse. “I didn’t know it was stolen. I borrowed it from a friend. I forget the friend’s name.” It is lame. Everyone knows it is a lie, yet it can’t be proved and so the prosecutors do not pursue it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
