INAUGURATION DAY: West Seattle High School, Madison Middle School students march

IMG_9446

1:06 PM: West Seattle High School students are marching in The Junction right now. The photo above came in via text – and our crew is catching up with them as they arrive at California/Alaska. Police are monitoring the march, according to what we’re hearing via scanner.

More photos later – also, Madison Middle School students are expected to head that way soon.

2:07 PM: The Madison students didn’t go to The Junction after all. They left the school around 1:45; we recorded them walking toward California a few minutes later (see Twitter video here – it’s not embeddable today for some reason). We saw them cross paths with returning WSHS students shortly thereafter, and went further down California – but instead of heading toward The Junction, they headed back to school, where we saw the group back outside the entrance a few minutes ago.

4:49 PM: Thanks to the reader who texted this video of the Madison group as they walked along California earlier:

So proud of the youth in this community.

  • SillyGoose January 20, 2017 (1:43 pm)

Awesome Students and remember I want to see you all kick ass in the polls in 4 years and get this jerk out of the white house!!!

  • M January 20, 2017 (1:43 pm)

They walked out right after the election. I appreciate they get to learn about and demonstrate their free speech. However, maybe now it’s time to be taught a little respect and hard work. I fear what we are teaching these kids if they think it’s okay to just walk out of their obligations because they don’t like something.

    • Sealth parent January 20, 2017 (3:55 pm)

You sound like a fascist.  Just saying.

    • Kimbee2 January 20, 2017 (7:51 pm)

They are learning something. Question authority. Speak up and demonstrate peacefully. Stand up for one another. Be the change you want to see in the world.

  • WSHS & MMS Mom January 20, 2017 (1:44 pm)

That’s right kids make your voiced heard!

  • clark5080 January 20, 2017 (2:06 pm)

Whatever happened to the art of compromise?  Is my way or the highway for both parties these days so nothing gets done.

    • Tim January 20, 2017 (4:13 pm)

Like all the cooperation in the last bunch of years?

  • charles hickey January 20, 2017 (2:24 pm)

I observed the peaceful demonstration in Jefferson square.  Another viewer in a kitchen apron from a nearby business was watching with his cell phone recording and was speaking into the phone saying “look at these dipshit high school kids”.  He then shouted at them to speak up because he couldn’t hear them.

I asked him if he wouldn’t mind sharing with them what he just called them.

This man then turned his ire towards me and said I was probably gay and then called me a F@##&t.  Slightly shocked that he would use such hateful speech I said I look forward to seeing his video online.

He turned his camera towards me and asked my name.  I stated my full name because I am not afraid to hide behind a camera or a keyboard.

He left to go back to his place of work, Kizuki Ramen.

As the peaceful demonstration came to a close I felt that it was important to make the management of that establishment aware of what their staff member was saying outside of the place of business.

Upon entering the venue and asking to see the manager the staff member in the kitchen saw me and started shouting “i’m tresspassing you!” and got confrontational.  I ignored him as I waited to speak with the manager outside.

The staff member then ran to get the police who approached as I was having a polite conversation with the Manager to explain how his staff member was using derogatory language and hate speech outside his place of business.

A polite conversation ensued, and I spoke my voice politely and respectively.

To the officers outside Kizuki Ramen and the Manager of the establishment, I thank you for your time.  For all of the police officers across the country I hope you remain safe with all demonstrations that will be happening as people want to be heard.

To those that lead a verbal assault with hate speech and anger, I hope more people like me are not afraid to speak against you with compassion and civility.  And when you are spoken against, perhaps try apologizing for your words and learn to voice your concern with intelligence instead of hiding behind your camera, keyboard and the police.

My name is Charles Martin Hickey Jr.

YES!! Way to stand for what is right!!

  • Cat Rambo January 20, 2017 (2:33 pm)

You kids made the day a little brighter for me. Keep making your voices heard.

  • RO January 20, 2017 (2:35 pm)

like it or not he is our presidents we should support him and most of all you should support U S A

    • AmandaK(H) January 20, 2017 (3:19 pm)

“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

Being President is exactly why we shouldn’t  support a misogynistic, xenophobic, bigoted, hypocritical nationalist.

    • Michael January 20, 2017 (4:19 pm)

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
      -Theodore Roosevelt

I was the one who submitted the tip and photo used. Here are some more photos from the West Seattle High and Madison Middle School marches. It was certainly great to see.

Thank you for the photos. We really do have more but this afternoon has unfolded very disjointedly so we’re somewhat behind, after publishing a lot of other news early. We also have received Madison video that we hopefully WILL be able to embed. And we got a very late alert that Boren K-8 STEM was rallying, too late to get over there, but if anyone has a photo, please send and we’ll publish. First – we’re continuing to gather information on the slide aftermath from early today and have to get back over there one more time …

  • Neighbor January 20, 2017 (3:06 pm)

@ro-for many he is not and will never be our President. Never has a man been more unfit to hold this office.

Those of us who are dissenting are demonstrating our most sacred of American  rights. If history is our teacher it shows that blind devotion to any man is dangerous and anti American. Blind devotion is what gave the world Hitler. It is up to patriotic Americans to resist and excercise their rights, it’s foundational.

  • JT January 20, 2017 (3:13 pm)

Today in DC was about celebrating the peaceful transition of power among disagreeing parties.  The negativity is suspended for a day while we count our blessings.  Living here is too often taken for granted when we elevate our own grievances above the needs of the nation.  Presidents come and go, but our institutions need to be respected so they survive.

  • Wb January 20, 2017 (3:19 pm)

Love it! Thanks for the photos. Kids speaking up for their future.

  • Bea January 20, 2017 (3:22 pm)

So proud am I of you who demonstrated !

Ignore the slings and arrows of those who see the world differently and would criticize you for speaking truth to power.  You have every right, and you ARE right.  Keep on!

  • dsa January 20, 2017 (4:08 pm)

These students are great.   With their spirit, we will survive this.

  • Les January 20, 2017 (4:20 pm)

I don’t remember any protests of president Obama’s election or reelection . Give president elect Trump a chance  let him try to” make America great again” If he fails vote him out in four years..I love my country and I respect the voters decisions whether I agree with them or not that’s  democracy

    • Mark32 January 20, 2017 (5:02 pm)

      Thank you Les.

    • sun*e January 20, 2017 (6:36 pm)

I totally agree!  Our democracy should be respected just as it has always been!  We are the United States of America so let’s UNITE and give President Trump a chance!

    • CAM January 20, 2017 (8:19 pm)

I would refer you to the formation of the Tea Party and the near daily protests that occurred (as they should have been allowed to do) for an extended period.

    • Erico January 20, 2017 (9:35 pm)

America is already great and part of what makes it great is that we can openly and freely criticize the president.

      • sun*e January 20, 2017 (10:40 pm)

Trump just became our president today… I think he deserves a bit more time before anyone criticizes him.

        • Mike January 21, 2017 (7:42 am)

Why?  He’s already proven to love Putin more than the well being of the USA.  He’s proven to be a sexist, racist, egotistical jerk.  He’s blatantly stated he will not obey the laws that prevent his family members from being in his cabinet.  He blatantly lied about ‘draining the swamp’.  He’s a joke and he’s been in office 1 day.

        • Erico January 21, 2017 (8:22 am)

Good for you!  You wait as long as you need to to criticize him.  The rest of us will make up our own minds.

  • Roxy January 20, 2017 (4:42 pm)

Good job, future voters. Free speech is the FIRST amendment due to its importance!

  • Karen January 20, 2017 (4:47 pm)

A point I would make to all those who are opposed to the students walking out, they didn’t get a vote. What happens over the next four years will directly affect these kids as they become adults and yet they had no voice in this election. I for one am proud of them for making their voices heard .

    • Mike January 20, 2017 (8:52 pm)

They have a voice, they have the right to voice their opinion.  Most didn’t have the right to vote, yet, because of their age.  Don’t confuse things.  Just because you can’t mark down your preference in elected officials and changes to laws on a ballot does not mean you don’t have a voice.  Now it’s too late, those that chose to vote for anyone but Hillary chose to elect Trump, now they want to make a stand…too late, too little.

  • WS Voice January 20, 2017 (4:51 pm)

    Well said Les.

  • Westside45 January 20, 2017 (5:14 pm)

    Waste of time and resources.

  • Erico January 20, 2017 (5:18 pm)

    Les –

Trump lost popular vote by almost 3 million votes.  Obama won the popular vote by almost 10 million votes.

Trump has the lowest approval rating of a new president in modern history (37%).  Obama had the highest approval as a new president In recent history (84%).

US intelligence agencies have concluded that the Russians interfered to aid Trump.  Trump’s advisors are being investigated by the FBI to see if they colluded with the Russians.

These are just some of the reasons for the differences in people’s reaction to their inaugurations.

    • sun*e January 20, 2017 (10:47 pm)

      Trump won the electoral vote.

      • Mike January 21, 2017 (7:43 am)

        electoral, not majority

      • Erico January 21, 2017 (8:25 am)

Yes,  you are absolutely correct.  That is why he was inaugurated yesterday!  My point was that Obama had much more popular support when he took office than Trump does.  Trump is historically unpopular – hence the protests.

    • S January 21, 2017 (11:36 am)

Take out California and New York and he wins popular vote and that is why we have the electoral college otherwise two states run everything.

  • SG January 20, 2017 (5:52 pm)

The 6th and 7th graders won’t be old enough to vote in the next election, either. Proud of them for exercising their right to protest. They deserve to be heard.

  • Buddy January 20, 2017 (7:23 pm)

    Agree Less

Didn’t Hillary win the “popular” vote in the 2008 primary? Shouldn’t she have been the presidential candidate?

    🤔🤔

  • WestCake January 20, 2017 (8:10 pm)

Left out of this conversation is how the vast majority of Seattle, and Washington State voters supported Sanders early on, this caused a record number of ballots to be cast for 3rd party candidates, which interfered with the election far more than Russia ever could have.

  • Jeannie January 20, 2017 (8:13 pm)

Thank you, students! Trump is not just an ordinary Republican. I was disappointed when Reagan, Ford, Bush and Bush won, but I wasn’t frightened for our country.

  • parent January 20, 2017 (9:44 pm)

What are the rules for printing photos with out a parental consent form. I don’t think that is legal ??

    • S January 21, 2017 (11:37 am)

They are in public, so you don’t need parental consent.

  • Chris Cowman January 20, 2017 (10:07 pm)

Respect the institution and the process.

Protest on Saturday.. Respect should be taught in schools.

    • Erico January 21, 2017 (8:46 am)

I think the word you meant was conformity , not respect.

  • sun*e January 20, 2017 (10:57 pm)

What are these students protesting about?  The electoral college, democracy… what?

    • Erico January 21, 2017 (8:28 am)

See my posts above if you are really confused.  Hope it helps!

      • sun*e January 21, 2017 (10:03 am)

Tweet from Hilary Clinton yesterday:  “I’m here today to honor our democracy & its enduring values. I will never stop believing in our country & its future.”

Even she still respects the process and if she can, we all should… we are the UNITED States of America, after all!

        • Erico January 21, 2017 (10:11 am)

You are free to honor democracy in any way you see fit!  Others are free to honor it as they see fit.  That’s the beauty of our democracy!

          • sun*e January 21, 2017 (12:13 pm)

Yeah, protesting our democracy and honoring our democracy are the same thing… NOT!

          • sun*e January 21, 2017 (12:25 pm)

I suppose I should mention that I do not like Trump nor did I vote for him but I do choose to respect and honor our democracy because I love our country.  Plus I’m forever the optimist!

  • Les January 21, 2017 (10:23 am)

    Here is something to protest.

The leaked DNC  Podesta emails proved that Bernnie  never had a chance,  that is fact.

Thanks  you WikiLeaks for TRUE news.

Sorry, comment time is over.
