WEATHER, TRAFFIC, SCHOOLS: Post-snowfall Friday

(WHERE HAS SDOT PLOWED/SANDED/SALTED? Go here. IS METRO RE-ROUTING? Go here. SCHOOL INFO: Scroll down)

ORIGINAL REPORT 5:31 AM: Good morning! After a snowy night, schools are opening late today:

SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS: 2 hours late, buses on snow routes (full details here)
INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS:
Explorer West Middle School 10 am start
Westside School 10 am start
Our Lady of Guadalupe 10:30 am start
Holy Rosary 10:25 am start

SOUTH SEATTLE COLLEGE: Opening at 10 am

editor@westseattleblog.com with your school update – thanks!

TRANSIT: Metro says many routes are delayed. (See comments below for bus riders’ reports.)

ROADS: Side streets are the main challenge, but you might encounter slickness anywhere. It’s above freezing now, but not by much.

6:53 AM: We are continuing to update the school list. Also of note, the forecast: The “winter weather advisory” is set to expire at 8 am. Here’s the overnight “forecast discussion” (next one due around 9 am, same link).

7:11 AM: This is the kind of situation you might encounter on non-arterials:

kevintruck

Kevin Freitas tweeted that photo: “Truck stuck SW 36th Ave, Alaska/Edmunds. They service The Mount & have to back in to their loading dock. Not today.”

7:57 AM: Thanks to Nick for this note, also mentioned in comments: “There’s a jackknifed 56 bus in the middle of Admiral, just before Admiral and California, on the hill down by the green belt.”

9:04 AM: Remember, schools are running late this morning, so you’ll see school buses, walkers, riders in the next hour or so that you usually wouldn’t at this time of day. While the main roads are mostly bare, still snow off the roads. Here’s Junction Plaza Park:

Just in from the Seattle Public Library:

Branch locations of The Seattle Public Library regularly open today, Friday, Dec. 9, will have a delayed start of noon due to the snow. The Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., will open at its 10 a.m. regular time.

      Thanks!

  • MercyMoi December 9, 2016 (6:14 am)

Also noted for SPS families, No preschool, No Head Start.

Thanks for all you do, WSB!

    • WSB December 9, 2016 (6:31 am)

I’ve linked to the full rundown on the SPS site (including buses on snow routes) – TR

  • Katie Auker December 9, 2016 (6:16 am)

Explorer West has a delayed start at 10am today.

  • JT December 9, 2016 (6:21 am)

Westside School is also on late arrival (10:00am start time).

  • Steve December 9, 2016 (6:32 am)

Love the links to the SDOT map of current/past 3 hour road snow clearing…thanks so much!!

  • Jtm December 9, 2016 (6:40 am)

That map is useless on a Mobil version.

    • WSB December 9, 2016 (6:45 am)

      Which map?

      • Jtm December 9, 2016 (7:38 am)

The one that you put a link for in your story.  The one about the roads that are treated and not treated.  Good lord.

      • Jtm December 9, 2016 (7:39 am)

The first link in your story. Good lord.  Go on a Mobil device every once in awhile and check to see what your posting works on multiple platforms.   90% of people are already on the road and are not on their laptops.

        • Eddie December 9, 2016 (7:46 am)

Take a great big chill pill!  Good Lord!

        • WSB December 9, 2016 (7:54 am)

JTM, sorry, I have no control over the city’s map. A lot of people check our site before leaving home, on all manner of desktop/laptop/tablet devices too per our stats, so it’s at least useful to them. Please send the city feedback on what’s not working. And yes, we do publish and read from our phone as well as from the laptop, more than “once in a while” … Tracy

          First world problems.  Sheesh.

        • Wow December 9, 2016 (8:30 am)

I was able to see it just fine on my phone. Maybe the problem is yours.

        • ECamel December 9, 2016 (8:32 am)

I didn’t know Mobil even made phones!

        • Alan December 9, 2016 (9:32 am)

Oh good lord. It works fine on my phone. I think the problem is between  your chair and device. As others have pointed out, that the link takes your to a site that is not WSB’s  to maintain for you. Success depends on your device, your operating system and your browser. Use the wrong one of any of those three and is sucks to be you. Large companies with web presence keep test labs with a large variety of devices in order to confirm you can do business with them. They still may warn that their site works “best” or even “requires” a certain browser. The resources required to maintain a test lab are way beyond your neighborhood blog, which is why I always let WSB know if I see something that doesn’t seem right. Hopefully I never have done it in such an arrogant, privileged manner. Good lord.

Jtm, I don’t have a Smartphone,  but for those that do,  it might be of value to them if you share what you find out  from the City after contacting them on this issue,  should others have issues in viewing.

waiting at California and Admiral, no 56.

    • S December 9, 2016 (7:50 am)

There was a 56 that was stuck on Admiral, east of Schmitz Park. Got stuck at a bus stop on a hill. Good reminder for riders to go to a bus stop at a flat area.

      • WSB December 9, 2016 (7:51 am)

Just adding that, got a message about it.

  • sam-c December 9, 2016 (6:55 am)

Based on the SDOT map, it looks like they’ve gone up and down Andover (say that out loud) on pigeon point.

Any  word on what it actually looks like? TIA

    • ocean December 9, 2016 (7:54 am)

      Good one, sam-c !

      • Laura December 9, 2016 (8:11 am)

Oh my god, thanks for pointing that out! I’ll be giggling and up-and-down-and-over-ing all day. All giggles are welcome. Thanks for them!

  • JayDee December 9, 2016 (6:59 am)

    @ New Native–Have you seen the 50?

  • newnative December 9, 2016 (7:09 am)

I saw the 50  and an early 55  but not the following 55.

  • forkwhy December 9, 2016 (7:10 am)

anyone know what the road condition of admiral hill looks like, snow, ice, slush, clear???

    • WSB December 9, 2016 (7:15 am)

FW, we asked on Twitter, and Robert replied, “No problem at all. Like a rainy day now.”

      • forkwhy December 9, 2016 (7:36 am)

        Thanks

    • LK December 9, 2016 (7:21 am)

It was fine at 5:30 but the 56 stopped at 49th and got stuck and everyone had to get off…I thought snow route meant no stops on hills? I went home, got the car and was downtown in 12 min…

  • Greg December 9, 2016 (7:15 am)

Of all the places in west seattle that has a traffic camera and is on a giant hill, why don’t they make the cameras on admiral leading to the bridge available to view online!?

  • Sarah December 9, 2016 (7:16 am)

Quick question – has anyone driven down Jacobsen this morning? It’s our usual route but with the water from Me Kwa Mooks it sometimes freezes. I’ll avoid it and go the long way if it’s looking dicey.

  • Jeff December 9, 2016 (7:32 am)

Actually made it in to work early today! A little slushy on the side streets, but main arterials are in good shape. Took 128 to Junction then hopped on a C line, no problems!

  • Bus rider December 9, 2016 (7:45 am)

Delridge / bus 120 was completely fine. I think I got to work faster actually.

  • Jenava Sexton December 9, 2016 (8:04 am)

Anyone know what the helicopter near the junction was for at around 7am?

    • WSB December 9, 2016 (8:17 am)

      Just TV.

  • West Seattle since 1979 December 9, 2016 (8:14 am)

I couldn’t believe it! My 21 local came right on time at 35th and Avalon, even though it had to come down that hill.  It even got to Pioneer Square earlier than usual because there seemed to be fewer people–some people must have stayed home, or decided to go in later.

  • Meg December 9, 2016 (8:15 am)

The 56 leaving 61st and Alki little before 8 left on time and made it up the hill.

  • newnative December 9, 2016 (8:21 am)

The roads were not bad at 7am, I don’t know why some buses are getting stuck.  But I did give kudos to our #57 driver (6:55am departure from California/Admiral) for driving well.  He was careful and we got to downtown on time.

  • East Coast Cynic December 9, 2016 (8:56 am)

For some reason the 7:15am 21X at 35th SW & Morgan did not show up ( a bit of a problem child run) but the 7:30am 21X showed up more or less on time—-with crowds to the front door on a par with similar no shows for a preceding bus:/.  Quick ride thanks to well plowed main drags and minimal car traffic.  But it seemed like the people who take the bus to work were, for the most part, just about all present.

  • SequoiaSempervirens December 9, 2016 (9:16 am)

34th outside of West Seattle Elementary is slippery but traversable. I slipped around a bit trying to get my son dropped off, so please be careful!

Sorry, comment time is over.
