New Admiral Way sign goes up

Thanks to Val for the photo: SDOT was out installing one of the final components of the SW Admiral Way project west of California SW today. The sign was described on the project map last summer as “new westbound radar feedback sign at high speed location.”

So am I the only one that thought that a “buffered bike line” was meant to protect the bikes, not the parked cars? Check out the entire NW end of the hill.

I use Admiral at least twice a day from 63rd to California.  I’ve seen NO changes to car speeds and have  not seen ANY additional bike users. So why was the money was spent to restripe??

speed trap disguised as a neighborhood bucolic drive in the woods speed limit shud be about 50mph I am a 39 year trucker and I know my roadways, this place is just a plain blight on citizens pick your pockets and if you elect me, I will abolish all speed limit signs. Get your taxes from the corporations, not robbing the people.

I still bike up Admiral and the bike lanes have been a godsend. I feel much safer now that the drivers are (for the most part) passing safely. This was a huge and much needed improvement.

I feel safer in a car.

I’ve noticed more bicyclists on this portion of Admiral. I don’t think speeds have changed, but I haven’t seen speeders passing cars doing the speed limit (which used to happen with the middle lane). Some of the turns tighten up pretty quickly (e.g., downhill from the Schmitz Preserve bridge) and so I suspect speeders are cutting into the bike lane in order to navigate them. Buses often have difficulty staying within the marked roadway.  Finally, I haven’t seen police ticketing on the western portion of Admiral for a long time.

You can e-mail SPD and ask for emphasis patrols.  I asked for one on 5th & Union because of all the illegal left-turners and there was a (very busy) cop at the intersection a week later.  No, it didn’t solve the problem permanently, but it did reduce it, taught some folks a lesson, and made a lot of money for the city.

I use Admiral at least twice a day on a bike and at other times in a car or bus. It’s rainy and December, so you might not see a lot more bike riders yet. But it sure feels safer to me on a bike to have vehicle drivers more aware of where bikes are likely to be.

Freeballard, the buffer is between the parked cars and the bike lane on a part of Admiral going downhill because bikes in that stretch are usually going pretty fast (15-25 mph), so the bigger danger there is from people opening their parked car doors and hitting someone on a bike. The angled striping gives bike riders the message that they should not ride too close to the parked cars.   Going uphill, the bike riders are going slower,  so the buffer is on the traffic lane where the speed differential is greater.

Thank you to everyone who is adapting and taking it a little easier and walking, biking, driving safer on my street.

Passive sign tells me I’m speeding; I know I’m speeding.

  • JeffK December 11, 2016 (11:36 am)

    This should be 40mph.

Sorry, comment time is over.
