Not all graduations happen in summer. Last night in West Seattle, 112 graduates were cheered and applauded at a banquet and ceremony marking their success in a paid-training program that launches them into good-paying jobs in a field where there’s much demand. You’d think there would be a waiting list for a program like that, right? Not so – it’s looking for more applicants! More on that after we get back to more about the event.

The Puget Sound Electrical Apprenticeship Training Center graduation is what brought grads, family, friends, and educators to Brockey Center at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor).

The center provides the training required for certification as Construction Electricians, Low Voltage/Sound and Communication Electricians, or Residential Electricians. According to the announcement we received, “programs provide opportunities to ‘earn while you learn,’ through paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction that leads to high-paying careers in skilled trades.”

Like any graduation, this one honored exceptional achievements – academic excellence, perfect attendance, apprentice of the year. Two grads spoke, Karla Hemmelgarn and Aaron Martin, with praise for the program and exuberance about their future:

Special gifts awaited the grads – useful for their careers ahead:

While the program welcomes all qualified applicants (see the minimum requirements here), there are specific programs for veteran and female applicants, too. This year’s graduates, who ranged in age from 20s to 40s, included five women and 18 veterans. Find out more about the training options here; find out how to apply here.

Speaking as a 20 year veteran in this trade and having working in diverse environments I can say that this is an awesome and diverse field covering a diverse technical field. It’s surprisingly difficult to get good apprentices and only a fracton of those complete their training to become licensed electricians.

Congratulations, new journey, or soon to be journey, electricians. New opportunities await you!

Awesome, good solid jobs that pay well and training to get them.  I suspect many people just don’t know about these career paths any longer as there’s a lot more focus on the industry I’m in and even though tech pays well, it’s incredibly competitive to get a foot in the door.  More career paths need training programs like this.

Congratulations on a huge step in your careers! I trust you’ll take this experience with you for the rest of your lives; not only the trades you have learned but the fellowship and skills to interact with people professionally. Here’s to you, your partners, kids and your proud parents (however old you are :-).

Love the program concept and that the WSB gives it a big write up. We can’t praise these folks enough for jumping and and taking the right path. Good stuff all around!

Why was there no mention of the Union involved. I am a retired member of  IBEW LU 46.  I retired after 40 years of service. Our unions don’t get the credit they deserve in bettering the wages and  working conditions in all job areas they represent. The training programs provided by these UNION apprenticeships are the best in the trade. Congratulations to the new Journeyman and women. May you live long and prosper. Work safe.  JP

These workers are given the training needed to get the job done right and paid a living wage to do the work they’ve been trained for. It is a win for everyone- the workers who are trained for lifelong careers, the employers who have a ready stream of well trained labor, and the client getting the job done right the first time. Congratulations graduates- may you have a long and successful career in Local 46!
