FOLLOWUP: West Seattle deer, seen again

In case you missed the story last night: A deer has found its way to West Seattle. And it’s been spotted again today, so we’re publishing this update. Last night, Peter tweeted a photo from 21st/Andover on Pigeon Point. Apparently the deer moved directly west/downhill, and has been seen this afternoon by the West Seattle Health Club at 28th/Andover. M, who reported that sighting, says it appears to be injured/limping, but has lost sight of it. If it is injured, the Seattle Animal Shelter should be notified, if it hasn’t been already – 206-386-7387. Deer are rarely seen in Seattle city limits, but commenter Scott pointed out last night that this could be the same deer first seen in the Union Bay area, and more recently in Beacon Hill, directly east of us.

I wonder if it swam here from Vashon or Kitsap?  I have seen deer swimming between islands up north numerous times.

My son had spotted a deer before his soccer game at Jefferson Play field last week.  May be the same one.

Poor little guy stuck in a big City……..

This is the most hilarious thing to see as published news, being a resident of Vashon just across the pond – where we have hundreds if not thousands of deer.

Maybe s/he took the ferry over?

I would have gone for the swimming (or ferrying) theory if not for the fact that it was first spotted in Pigeon Point, which is east/northeasternmost West Seattle. More likely it swam the Duwamish, if it’s really the same deer. And yeah, it’s funny, but we haven’t had a deer sighting here in the nine years we’ve been doing this (I checked and re-checked the archives) so …it’s news. There were a couple sightings in 2010 in the north end of the city that came up on Google …

The deer was at Nucor. It wandered out by our north RR tracks and through our scrap yard before being corralled and collected by animal control.

Thank you. I’ll call SAS in the morning and ask about its fate.

I hope the deer is OK.  WSB…please let us know what you find out.

Well, this is a mystery. I just talked to the acting director of the Seattle Animal Shelter and my call was the first they had heard of the deer – if someone picked it up, it wasn’t them. So I’m calling Nucor next.

Sounds like a call to the Vashon island sanctuary is in order. Ask them, what will our coyotes have to eat if they take all of our geese and deer? I have seen a lot of rabbits and my neighbor saw some rats, of late though. Perhaps our pseudo-wild fauna will sort itself into equilibrium after all.

I literally stumbled over a small deer carcass in Lincoln Park about 3 years ago. Never thought much of it until today.

I saw the deer yesterday (Monday) near the Health club.  It was a nice Blacktail doe.  It was not  limping and appeared to be in good health.

Mark47n: Are you sure it was animal control? Could be the Vashonders who took our geese, maybe. #donttakeourcoyotesnext

Sorry, comment time is over.
