UPDATE: 7,700+ lose power in southeast West Seattle, White Center, Top Hat, Burien

ORIGINAL REPORT, 4:35 PM: Thanks for the tips. As of less than 10 minutes ago, power has gone out for more than 4,200 customers (homes/businesses), mostly just south of West Seattle but including some WS pockets. More to come.

5:01 PM UPDATE: Seattle City Light‘s map also includes another 3,500+ out in parts of Burien. No word yet on the cause – SCL’s current “restoration estimate” is 11 pm, but as we always remind you during outages, that is a guesstimate at best, could be sooner, could be later.

5:28 PM UPDATE: The SCL map now blames “tree” for outage. Restoration guesstimate has updated to 11:25 pm.

6:13 PM UPDATE: SCL now says via Twitter “crews have now determined that the cause was due to a broken utility pole crossarm near the Duwamish Substation.”

6:49 PM UPDATE: All but 588 customers are back on.

SUNDAY MORNING: According to the City Light map, everyone had power restored at some point very early this morning.

If you’re on mobile and not seeing a timestamp, hit the “desktop” option at the bottom of the page. That will show you a perfectly mobile-suitable version that does include the timestamp. Sorry, somebody else built the software and we haven’t been able to get someone to customize it for that, yet. However, with a breaking story like this, once we start adding updates, we’ll have manual time mentions anyway, so give me a minute. We were out when this broke and had to post via the phone so it’s rather bare-bones, back at HQ now.

At Arrowhead Gardens, I heard a loud bang towards the highway when the lights flickered off on off. It could have been a substation transformer.

Indeed, how dare the map blame the tree, especially when that turned out to be wrong. Thanks to SCL’s tweeter for the detail about the cross-arm … the map is a map of few words and its update said only “equipment failure.”

AKW – according to the City Light map, the final 580+ customers got their power back at some point very early this morning.
