TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Wednesday updates and alerts

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

6:52 AM: Good morning. One incident of note on the outbound routes right now – a vehicle fire in the right lane of northbound I-5 before the exit to I-90.

7:01 AM: WSDOT says that fire is now blocking two right lanes.

7:13 AM: Those lanes are now clear, per WSDOT.

7:54 AM: Multiple reports that Fauntleroy is backed up big time on the way to the bridge today. There are no obvious incidents – no 911 responses, nothing mentioned by SDOT.

7:57 AM: If you’re thinking about an alternative to Delridge Way, avoid 25th SW in the SW Findlay vicinity – scanner just had a dispatch of police to help a semitruck driver who reports being stuck at that intersection.

8:13 AM: SDOT has nothing to explain the Fauntleroy backup – theorizing the bridge jam overall might be residual effect of earlier NB I-5 incidents. Meantime, do avoid Findlay west of Delridge – SPD, per scanner, is now blocking off Findlay there because of the stuck truck at 25th SW.

8:32 AM: Just went through 25th/Findlay to check on the truck situation – all clear.

8:37 AM: However, heading westbound on Genesee, we note the eastbound (Delridge-bound) traffic is way backed up, almost all the way to the bottom of the hill. And now – Avalon backup almost to 35th. Fauntleroy still looking thick, but flowing with the green light. (If you are going WESTBOUND on Fauntleroy, a double-trailer construction truck is blocking one of the lanes turning toward The Whittaker, just past Trader Joe’s.)

9:10 AM NOTE – THANK YOU! Now that the heart of the commute is over … just a word of thanks to everyone sharing information, whether via comments, via texting/calling 206-293-6302 (provided you’re not driving! thanks to all the bus riders who help out this way), or (if not urgent) editor@westseattleblog.com … we really appreciate it and so do your neighbors who benefit from the info shared here.

9:25 AM: If you’re headed east on the surface, east of the low bridge, note that a crash is blocking 6th S./S. Spokane, per SDOT Twitter and scanner. A semitruck is involved and SPD is looking to dispatch Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.

9:47 AM: That one’s down to just one lane of blocking. But now, an incident on the eastbound West Seattle Bridge … someone has been spotted walking on the bridge, with a gas can. So perhaps there’s a stalled vehicle out there somewhere.

Traffic getting out of West Seattle has been really bad lately. Is this back to school traffic?

  • cjac September 14, 2016 (7:49 am)

Any ideas why all paths to the lowbridge are backed up?

  • Stuart September 14, 2016 (7:49 am)

What’s going on? Fauntleroy backed up and at a  standstill all the way back to Trader Joe’s cars aren’t moving very congested near taco time entrance to the bridge

We just got a text about this. Nothing from SDOT, nothing on 911. Trying to think if we can find a way to go look without making it worse by adding one more car!

  • Paul September 14, 2016 (7:55 am)

C line bus just sitting on Avalon at moment.

    • Meyer September 14, 2016 (8:52 am)

Same here and it’s now 8:52. I left my house over a half hour ago

  • CMP September 14, 2016 (8:01 am)

No obvious reason except perhaps the sun.  Only in Seattle.

    • WSB September 14, 2016 (8:02 am)

We asked SDOT if they had anything in the system at all, but no … their speculation is residual backup from earlier problems on NB I-5.

  • Beau September 14, 2016 (8:03 am)

Traffic starting to flow better from Avalon onto WS Bridge, just now… Normal transit time behind by 10 min.

    • WSB September 14, 2016 (8:11 am)

      Thanks!

  • Stuart September 14, 2016 (8:04 am)

Half an hour to get from Trader Joe’s to the high-rise

  • IheartBPP September 14, 2016 (8:14 am)

I’d stay off the roads right now if you can.  20 minutes from Morgan Jct to the Triangle on the 116x.  Lower bridge is now closed to vehicle traffic.  Ugh

  • Mike September 14, 2016 (8:17 am)

The lower bridge is closed to East bound traffic.

  • LK September 14, 2016 (8:20 am)

    Two words: Water Taxi!

  • schwaggy September 14, 2016 (8:29 am)

It was the sun, folks. Blinded by the light….

  • IheartBPP September 14, 2016 (8:34 am)

Still trying to get to the bridge on the 116x.  Caught it at 7:53 in Morgan Jct  still in Acalon at 8:34.

I’m sure you are frustrated by this traffic disaster but people actually live in Luna Park and repeatedly LAYING on your horn is NOT helping anyone get through this. Sorry, but I can see you’re NOT in any “danger” that you need to blare and warn, you’re just pissed off. Blaring your horn in someone else’s neighborhood is just as selfish as that one driver that managed to get in front of you.

  • cjac September 14, 2016 (8:51 am)

Everything cleared up once reaching the low bridge, so the back up is a mystery.

  • AlkiGirl91 September 14, 2016 (9:14 am)

Nightmare commute.  30 minutes from Lincoln Park to the bridge.  It was total gridlock on Fauntleroy. It’s only going to get worse once these condos are built too where the Huling Brothers building used to be.  I’m wondering if some of this mess is the earlier start time for the schools.  You have everyone trying to get to work by 8am or 830am and we are now having a ton more cars with people taking their kids to school.

  • Pops September 14, 2016 (9:57 am)

Glad I’m not commuting today. After 20 years, the eastbound commute is getting so old.

  • Sna September 14, 2016 (10:08 am)

I think the sun theory is real.  Coming up the bridge today and yesterday ~7:00 it’s been very difficult to see driving directly towards the sunlight low on the horizon.

  • chris September 14, 2016 (10:40 am)

The bus was terrible today because so many people sitting by themselves in their automobiles were cheating into the bus lanes on 35th approaching Avalon and on Avalon itself.  If you need to drive alone or want to, that is fine. But don’t make thousands of bus riders suffer because of your selfishness.

  • Meg September 14, 2016 (10:41 am)

I work at Northgate and have to be on the bridge no later than 6:30 in order make my commute 30min, which is a miracle.

  • ndmonkey September 14, 2016 (12:11 pm)

The 35th/Avalon bus only lane was packed with cars yet again today.  This forced bus drivers to have to block traffic in order to make it to the stop across from the KFC.  This needs to be addressed, as it was causing a huge back up on 35th coming down to the bridge.

  • Pops September 14, 2016 (12:41 pm)

The bus lanes need to be enforced but from my experience it’s not going to happen or it will be a once a month type thing. That has been my experience anyway. It’s a low priority or there aren’t enough officers or it’s because of the consent decree.

  • slc September 14, 2016 (1:04 pm)

Agree about the sun.  At this time of year it’s right in your eyes when you come up on to the high bridge.  We can usually predict a backup on sunny mornings like yesterday and today.

Sorry, comment time is over.
