UPDATE: Car burns under West Seattle Bridge

2:31 PM: Seattle Fire is responding to a car-fire call listed as Delridge/West Marginal. We’re getting multiple reports that it’s generating a big column of smoke. We’re on the way to check it out.

2:45 PM: Almost at the scene. A reader photo just in shows this is under the high-level bridge, just east of where West Marginal turns into Spokane.

2:57 PM UPDATE: A BMW is what caught fire and burned. Both people inside got out OK. (Photo added above.) SFD says the occupants thought it might have been an electrical fire.

Just drove over the WS Bridge eastbound right through the black, black smoke. Quite scary since I didn’t know the source/cause.  Worst case scenario, I was afraid it might be a burning oil train on the tracks under the Bridge. Glad it wasn’t. I was half waiting for an explosion and fireball!

That looks like a late model BMW X6

Could also be an X4. It is hard to see the size of the thing.

    Wow! Not a Volkswagen !

VW and Audi don’t have engine wiring harness recalls, BMW does.  The 335i was notorious for catching fire in the engine compartment due to poorly made wiring harness parts.  It would not surprise me if that’s what happened with this one.  The more electrics we throw in cars, the more likely you are to see electrical fires.  I’d love to have the NHTSA put forward a requirement that new vehicles (gas/diesel/electric/propane) to have better fire suppression systems on vehicles.

Good thing it wasn’t a Tesla or it would be national news.

BMW does have a lengthy list of fire hazard recalls in their recent history. Luckily everyone is ok. Wow

Glad everyone got out okay.  That was quite a fire.

Sorry, comment time is over.
