West Seattle scene: Roxhill Park cleanup

When Mayor Murray‘s Find It, Fix It Community Walk comes to the Westwood/Roxhill area next Monday (here’s the map and schedule), it will end at Roxhill Park, which got some extra cleanup attention today:

Southwest Precinct Community Police Team officers were joined by participants in an SPD-coordinated city summer youth employment program.

This area on the south side of Roxhill Park has been the scene of unauthorized camping as well as illegal dumping.

Items found and trucked away included a wheelchair, bicycle, sleeping bags, clothing, and furniture, as well as this drum set:

On site were CPT officers Jon Flores (above) and John O’Neil (below, talking with local community advocate Amanda Kay Helmick):

The cleanup ran from about 9:30 this morning until noon. The Find It, Fix It Walk starts at the Longfellow Creek P-Patch next Monday night at 6:30 and will head east, through Westwood and then to Roxhill.

It takes a lot of people to clean out the hidden spots. Youth and CPO’s to offer assistance in a potentially unsafe situation….Definitely not from people sitting on the sidelines, offering unhelpful comments. Youth and Police have schedules too.

Why clean it up BEFORE the mayor gets to see what he needs to see?  Trash, stolen items, public drug use, beer cans and needles!

Why clean it up before the mayor does  the find it,  fix it community walk? Leave it so he/they can see how it really is as is.

so much garbage and unsanitary conditions from the unauthorized campers. if folks won’t accept services they shouldn’t be able to trash areas with impunity.

I hope that drumkit gets recycled / returned to its rightful owner

I hope the person who required the wheelchair was miraculously healed so they aren’t missing it.

Remember when the City of Seattle use to offer a free junk pick day once a year. Maybe this is our chance to take any unused items to Roxhill Park and dispose of them there just before Mayor Ed “mo money” Murray arrives. It could mess up his clean photo-op. HaHaHa .

Just yesterday I read that Seattle needed more parks. I suggest that the existing parks need to be properly maintained before I would support having more. Makes sense?

Wow.  Am I the only one looking at that sleeping bag in the back of the garbage truck and thinking “there goes someone’s bed”?  I’m glad it is still warm out.

Sorry, comment time is over.
