UPDATE: Gunfire in Lincoln Park; 13 shell casings found

11:08 PM: Thanks for the texts about suspected gunfire heard near Lincoln Park; we are just uphill and with windows open, we heard it too. Per scanner, police have been dispatched to check the area. If you saw anything, be sure to let them know. No report of any victim(s) so far; two people have mentioned hearing a vehicle “peeling away,” and we’re just now hearing on the scanner that someone by the ferry terminal has told police they believe the suspected shots came from “the woods.”

11:24 PM: In case you see Seattle Fire Engine 37 has been dispatched to Lincoln Park but the call isn’t related to gunfire, it’s a request for help in “extinguishing a campfire.” Also via scanner, police are saying they were told that “a group of high-schoolers was partying in the park” and “scattered” about the same time the gunfire was heard.

12:25 AM: We’ve confirmed with Southwest Precinct Lt. Alan Williams that casings were found. No injuries reported. No other details right now – he’s busy with officers working some other incidents (not related that we know of, but we’re checking; thanks for all the tips).

2:04 PM: More info from Lt. Williams: “Thirteen .40 caliber shell casings recovered. No known injuries or damage.” The gunfire was believed to be associated with a “party” in the woods at Lincoln Park.

I called the police, lots of people fleeing the park and taking off in vehicles

  • Amanda July 22, 2016 (11:15 pm)

Gun shots heard at 8600 block of Fauntleroy way. Multiple cars with lights turned on at Lincoln Park parking lot. Possibly came from parking lot?

  • BB July 22, 2016 (11:17 pm)

There were people with flashlights so that would make sense that they were in the woods

  • Captain Dave July 22, 2016 (11:28 pm)

I definitely heard the gunshots from all the way over at 40th and webster.  About seven to nine shots in rapid succession.

  • thistle stairs July 22, 2016 (11:42 pm)

On 46th and rose, distinct gunshots from the park, people walking on fauntleroy discribe a large party and no screams after the shots. Like it was for fun or bravado. Is it possible that some  idiot didn’t understand how insanely dangerous it is to identify himself as an active shooter in this day and age?  The law will still come at you the same…with good reason.

Police cars roaring down Morgan street towards Calif. Ave just minutes ago.

    • WSB July 23, 2016 (12:25 am)

Yeah, there’s something going on near California/Raymond, not yet sure what. Meantime, before we heard about that, we did get confirmation that casings were found at Lincoln Park. So updating this to “gunfire” rather than “suspected.”

  • Tamsen Spengler July 23, 2016 (1:17 am)

I think I hear gunfire from Morgan street n 38th. What’s going on+ no police sirens. I do hear it again . Scary

  • Tamsen Spengler July 23, 2016 (1:20 am)

    Just heard one more pop.

  • Joyce July 23, 2016 (1:26 am)

Heard gunshots near 40th and Morgan several rounds over the last 15 mins.

  • Tamsen Spengler July 23, 2016 (1:27 am)

Firecrackers may be saw flash? Should I call police?

    • WSB July 23, 2016 (1:28 am)

Somebody called that in, from 6600 block 39th SW. Police were dispatched but it’s always good to call 911 if you heard/saw something. No victim(s) reported so far. And at this hour of night, unless someone IS hurt or there’s a fire, you generally will NOT hear sirens.

  • Tamsen Spengler July 23, 2016 (1:47 am)

Thanks.  Hard to relax now. Didn’t see it on the crime Twitter . Will call if again.

    • WSB July 23, 2016 (2:00 am)

Tweets by Beat isn’t real time … it will probably show up in a few hours as “noise disturbance.” haven’t heard anything more on the scanner. Meantime, I have yet more info from SPD on the Lincoln Park gunfire, updating again above …

I was in Lincoln Park last evening, not at the time this went on, but there was something going on.  Lots of young people (older teens/college age??) hanging out.  Lots of pot smoking going .  Don’t know about drinking but a lot of people hanging out at #5 by the wading pool.  Looked like some sort of party.

    • Rick July 23, 2016 (10:44 am)

There was a Sealth all years pot luck kind of reunion thingy. Could have been part of what you saw.

Gunfire in West Seattle is getting  way out of hand!

  • Steve July 23, 2016 (8:13 am)

And you have a mayor and city council that are more concer about bike share programs and limiting the amount that can be charged to renters for move in fees.  West Seattle is getting more and more of these incidents to include the four idiots on the bridge with the shotgun.  It is only a matter of time before an innocent bystander pays the price.  The city needs real leaders who will place public safer at the forefront!  WS desperately needs far more cops.

  • Gene July 23, 2016 (8:54 am)

Steve-agree more police are needed- &  not just in WS. According to the Mayor -he wants to hire 200-but folks need to know that unless there are lateral transfers-it is a long process from hire-to on the streets. In other words-there’s no “quick fix” to this lack of adequate police.

It’s also unfortunate-that public safety -law enforcement hasn’t been a priority in the past-don’t know if its just a lack of vision, common sense-or head-in the-sand mentality.

I used to visit this park daily when I first moved to W Seattle in 01, now I live next to it.   I will say this, the place has changed and people  live there now.  There are trouble  makers in wee hours also and now and then I hear fighting.

City Leaders need to distinguish crime and homelessness!

  • AS July 23, 2016 (10:32 pm)

I just heard two “pops” near high point community center around 10 pm on 7/23.

    • WSB July 23, 2016 (10:34 pm)

Someone asked us on Twitter about gunshots heard near 16th/Myrtle around that same time. Haven’t heard anything more about them, and there are no injury reports, but please do call 911 if you hear something.

I remember many a day in high school there being parties in Lincoln Park,  though I don’t remember morons  shooting guns.

I will say,  the last time I took my little daughter to play in Lincoln Park,  we went in through the very north  point and there  was a group of what I would describe as meth addicts appearing to make camp under one of the trees near a group of bushes.

Now the parks are being infiltrated by this trash. And before I get criticized for saying thathat and being “heartless”,  keep in mind, I don’t care.  I’m far more concerned about my daughter  and other children playing in the park with the threat of dirty needles and other unsanitary  issues and crime than I am with the people causing them.

At Double Dub: I’m right there with you.  When homeless are allowed (yes, allowed by sake of not enforcing the laws) to take up refuge in one of the city’s premiere parks, there is little hope that enforcement can be made in lesser parks like (the soon to be expanded) Morgan Junction. I hope you take the time to report your findings to the SW Precinct; I got the feeling when reporting a vagrant in the Morgan Junction park that they really do wan to stay on top of this stuff. My hope is that the police will do nightly sweeps to catch them in the after-hours act at Lincoln. I know, wishful, wishful thinking.. There are resources for homeless. Our city parks are not the answer.

Sorry, comment time is over.
