Hopes and dreams for Food Lifeline‘s new Hunger Solution Center in South Park (815 S. 96th) were written on a blackboard during last night’s celebration. The party of course included a ribboncutting, with FL CEO Linda Nageotte deploying the oversized scissors:

The new 190,000-square-foot center, Food Lifeline says, will allow it to double the food it provides to 275 member agencies and programs:

34th District State Sen. Sharon Nelson spoke, saying it’s time to “stamp out” hunger:

She wasn’t the only elected official at the party. 34th District State Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon was also on hand (as both had been for the center’s groundbreaking last year, having worked on $3 million in state funding to contribute to the center’s construction):

That’s Fitzgibbon at left with his fellow West Seattleites (he tells WSB he recently moved north from Burien) Amy Lee Derenthal of Food Lifeline, Gary Potter of Potter Construction, and Josh Sutton of the WS/Fauntleroy YMCA. (Potter & the Y are WSB sponsors.)

And elected King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg was there too – with his band The Approximations:

Food Lifeline was at one point considering building its center on the West Seattle site at West Marginal Way and Highland Park Way that had been the on-and-off site of an encampment that the city evicted in fall 2013. It chose the South Park site instead for reasons including the fact it already held a huge warehouse shell – which made room for, among other things, a 17,000-square-foot cold-storage area that is “almost the size of our entire Shoreline warehouse” and still has room to grow.

Back to the aforementioned blackboard:

The ceremonies are over but the hard work of fighting hunger continues. Here’s what FL says you can do to help.
