FOLLOWUP: Charges filed against accused gun-waving car-prowl suspects

Charges are now filed against both suspects arrested in West Seattle Tuesday night for allegedly breaking into a car on Alki and then waving guns and other items in two incidents including the car prowl’s aftermath. (Our original report is here; our first followup is here.)

25-year-old Jory L. Preston and 19-year-old Justin M. Hoyt are both charged with second-degree vehicle prowl and second-degree theft. Preston also is charged with second-degree unlawful-firearm possession, as he is a convicted felon and not allowed to have a gun. The incident that led to the conviction, for domestic-violence assault, was covered here five years ago – Preston turned himself in at the Southwest Precinct after police, eventually including SWAT team members, sought him at a Delridge apartment building. He originally was charged with two counts of assault for a situation involving a former girlfriend, and struck a plea bargain, pleading guilty to one count, sentenced in September 2011 to the month and a half he had served by the time of the hearing. )

The charging papers filed today tell the same story detailed in our report last night on their bail hearing, with a few additional details – the amount of property they are accused of stealing is listed as more than $1600; also, police say Hoyt, despite having a Glock .380 semi-automatic handgun in his front pants pocket, did not have a concealed-pistol license. The charging papers say that while Hoyt has no felony record, he has convictions for being a minor intoxicated in public in 2013 and for hit and run in 2014. And while his bail was set at $100,000 in this new case, the jail register says he is being held without bail for a Cowlitz County warrant alleging failure to appear in a case of driving with suspended license. Preston’s bail remains at $100,000. Both will face arraignment next – no date on the docket yet, but likely week after next.

Well since these fine upstanding citizens have already been convicted of other crimes. Can we have pics?

  • CandrewB1 June 25, 2016 (7:19 am)

Mr. Preston is on Facebook and all was to be expected if you want to see what he looks and sounds like. Can’t say for Mr. Hoyt, except enjoy your shiny new felony. It’s doubtful you were going to do anything worthwhile in life, but now you’ve made it almost impossible for yourself. Nice work. Going by Admiral rental rates, there is no way loser #1 was paying for it himself so I am guessing he is still living with his parents.

Yep, their parents must be proud. BTW, is there any information on if the guns are stolen or not? I’m asking because a 10mm isn’t just your run of the mill caliber. This is a very powerful and deadly round comparative wise.

In fact it was so powerful that the FBI asked for an alternative to having to carry the 10mm and the S&W .40 caliber was created.

If thia POS wasn’t supposed to have a gun, it would be interesting how he got a hold of a 10mm

Similarly found Jory’s Facebook. It came as a complete surprise that a guy named Jory who pulls firearms on random people and is involved in domestic violence is an uneducated, unsophisticated violent hick. Go figure.

    Also a trump fan.

    • Andy July 10, 2016 (8:33 am)

Carole, are you a fan of alleged criminals like these two guys? I suspect you might be the type of voter who lets their bleeding heart get in the way of electing  judges who would take people like these two off the streets for a longer stretch in the slammer.  Bye the way, while I would have preferred somebody else to run against Hillary, I will not vote for her. Of course, you no doubt will take comfort in the fact that the Electoral College will nullify my vote. Trump in 2016!

    Preston’s Facebook page speaks volumes.

Not surprised he supports the Trumpzi Party, he’d be a perfect little Trumpzi.

Update – according to the King County Jail Register, Jory Preston has posted bond and been released from jail. Justin Hoyt is still listed on the roster of the Regional Justice Center (county jail in Kent), “bail denied” status because of the Cowlitz Co. warrant.

      • Dan July 10, 2016 (7:50 am)

The laws need to change on bond. Deny it for 3 yrs for 1st offense, with an additional 3 yrs for second and 5 for every after that. The current laws are too laxed.

West Seattle Blog is a disgrace. I am in no way condoning what these boys did at all nor do I know them but I come here to read details and updates not to read people humiliating and harassing someones FAMILY for HIS actions or people trying to find where he lives. That’s stooping to their level. Get a life. Read the updates. I think people on WSB have nothing better to do with their lives then to judge other peoples. Seriously disappointing. You people are the losers here.

PS. Glad these boys are getting punished for their action and I hope this will help them realize that there are more important things in life then this. I am sure deep down they’re kind, loving kids just fall into the wrong crowd, make stupid mistakes. Hopefully they will grow from this.

  • WSGirl June 27, 2016 (9:58 am)

These weren’t “boys”. They’re ADULTS. They ought to already know the difference between right and wrong. Don’t be so lenient, that’s one of the reasons this stuff happens to frequently. People in our community are angry, and rightfully so, that these scumbags are making us feel less safe and secure in a place we all love.

    • Jason321 June 27, 2016 (10:41 am)

I call them “boys” because they do childish things. No you don’t have the right to talk poorly of someones family and/or stalk their home. How creepy! You do not know them, you do not know what they are going through. Yes you have the right to be angry, but don’t stoop to their level.  (I’m referring to candrewb1) Also things on this blog are not 100% accurate so think about that.

Again, I’m not standing up for them, I believe what they did is very wrong, but I don’t believe in bashing his family.

        Jason,

Thank you for your thoughtful comments and for stating your opinion with a mature attitude.

  • Alan June 27, 2016 (12:19 pm)

Jason, twenty-five is way too old to be doing “childish” things. Do you really consider car prowling and threatening with weapons “childish”? Seriously? Even a nineteen-year-old knows that he is being criminal when he is threatening people. These two are not boys.

I would agree that the family should not be targeted in any way, though I don’t see that they were in any way threatened here. Suggesting they wouldn’t be proud of their son and that he is probably living with them is not an insult to the family or a threat to them in any way.

I find it odd that you are so quick to call WSBlog a disgrace and so reluctant to call these men the same, which they fully deserve.

I assure you that Jory’s family is NOT proud of his behavior nor do we condone the poor choices that he has made.  I cannot imagine the fear of everyone involved this night.  Or, for those of you who got your news from this blog only.  On behalf of my family, I am offering a sincere apology.  I am grateful to the police who acted quickly and very very thankful that no one was hurt (physically).  I understand that those of you who are replying to this post only know one side of the story but I ask that you stop with the derogatory remarks.  It’s just plain mean.  What kind of joy could you possibly get from threatening others, calling them names, judging them, berating parents?  Some of you may be incapable of empathizing with the depth of our grief and knowing what it is like to love a child so much and no matter how you try, he/she seems hell bent on self destructive behavior.  I don’t know Justin, but he’s someone’s child.  I don’t know his story, but I’ll bet, like Jory, people have tried to help him and that he is loved.  Instead of calling names and speaking ill of their parents, why don’t you pray for them?  Why don’t you volunteer in your neighborhood to be a mentor to a child?   Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.  I hope that none of you are in the same boat as we are.  I hate social media but felt compelled to reply.  I’m sure some some of you are going to make comments about me now or respond with some smart ass comment but for all those parents and relatives who are hurting today and all those kids that are on the wrong path, you are on my mind and in my prayers.   Also, for all the police officers out there who protect and serve us, thank you for all you do.

Auntie….thank you for your comment, more should help, mentor…than belittle because talk is much cheaper than to help the lost.

Sorry, comment time is over.
