West Seattle art: 9-year-old painter exhibiting at Ampersand Café

If you don’t go to Alki today to sit on the beach … go to see Milo‘s watercolor paintings. Milo is a 9-year-old third-grader at Pathfinder K-8 who started painting cars less than two months ago, and is already having his first exhibition – on the walls at Ampersand Café. His proud mom Sarah sent us these images of some of his work.

Sarah tells us Milo is “passionate about cars” but “also plays piano and is a decent chess player.” Milo’s paintings just went up at Ampersand (2536 Alki Avenue SW, open 6:30 am-5:30 pm daily) and will be up for about a month; if you like his creations, they’re featured on a poster that’s available for purchase.

We’ll be taking Milo to the car show for sure!  He’s been asking if they will have Ferrari’s there (one of his favorites) but I said that’s unlikely.

June 18th, there is a “Ferrari Day” car show in Redmond at the Redmond Town Center (weather permitting). Figured you may be interested since it’s his favorite car! http://www.exoticsat.com

It’s not the subject that impresses me, so much as the treatment of the shadows. Milo, you have a remarkable feel for the nuances of watercolors. I hope that you keep at it, and I hope to see some of your work 5 years from now.

@pigeonpoint The Redmond car show is totally Milo’s thing. We will have to get there. He likes exotic cars above all else! Thank you for the info!

@saltspray Thanks for the comments. I’m a painter so this is how all this started. I wanted Milo to try watercolor one day when he was off school sick and he did a couple of landscapes but that quickly turned into cars as that is his main interest.  I have had to guide him some with the paintinf side but he has been picking it up pretty fast.  His draftsmanship has come a long way too in that time.  You can tell his earlier cars to his later ones now. The style has changed.
