Next phase of Morgan Junction sidewalk work to start next week

sidewalkwork

Thanks to Morgan Community Association president Deb Barker for forwarding the SDOT alert: The next phase of sidewalk work along the west side of California SW, south of Fauntleroy Way, is set to start next week.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will replace broken and uplifted sections of sidewalk on the west side of California Ave SW in front of Ivy Court Apartments and the Marnae Apartments in the middle of this block.

This project is immediately south of the sidewalk that SDOT replaced in 2015.

SDOT does not currently plan to remove the seven street trees here.

After the sidewalk is removed and tree roots are examined, SDOT Urban Forestry staff will examine the tree roots and determine if the roots can be pruned or if one or more trees need to be removed.

After the jump, full details on construction hours and temporary effects in the area:

Planned Schedule

Construction is expected to take approximately 3 weeks (May 10 – 27).

Normal work hours will be 7:30 AM – 5 PM, Tues. – Fri.

Work will occur in 2 phases, starting at the north end. There may be days when phase 1 and phase 2 are both in progress.

Phase 1: South of the driveway at Subway to just north of Second Gear Sports.
Work begins Tues. May 10.

Phase 2: From Second Gear Sports to just north of the driveway for Marnae Apartments.
Work begins as early as Tues. May 17.

Rolling process to minimize disruption. As each section of sidewalk within each phase is completed, the sidewalk will be re-opened.

Parking

On-street parking spaces will be closed within the active construction zone but SDOT will always provide two to four on-street 2-hour parking spaces within the project area for local business customers.

The all-day parking spaces in front of Marnae apartments and south of Second Gear Sports will be converted to 2-hour parking spaces on May 10.

As sections of sidewalk are completed to the north and work progresses toward the south, parking spaces in front of the completed sidewalk will re-open and parking spaces toward the south end of the project zone will be closed.

Parking spaces north of the project area and south of Fauntleroy Way SW will not be affected.

Pedestrian Access

There will be pedestrian detours around the construction zone.

Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

While the flyer doesn’t mention it, Barker notes that this started as a Neighborhood Park and Street Fund grant application by Ginnie Hance, who manages Ivy Court.

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE TREES! ( Yes, I am yelling!)

I’m also very happy they are keeping the trees, but I believe there is still a chance they might remove some when the city arborist comes in to examine the roots.

Not to be pessimistic, but heed this warning, owners of the buildings that this sidewalk replacement will effect: see this story!  It doesn’t always go as planned, as far as “saving the trees”

Watch both videos and see comments at bottom of each!! Hoping it won’t happen to any other mature beautiful thriving tree in the neighborhood!! The pruning of the roots is not a good idea, some would say, for OBVIOUS reasons!

Sorry, comment time is over.
