West Seattle Crime Watch: More car windows hit

Just got another car-window vandalism report – from Stacie on Puget Ridge:

Our car window and one of our neighbors’ car window were busted out this evening. 3-19 between 7:30 and 9:20.

We are on 16th Ave SW not too far from the college. We have filed a police report but also thought it would be good to let our community know.

This follows multiple reports from Admiral and points just south, published in Crime Watch this morning, plus secondhand mentions from Sunrise Heights and North Delridge. Call 911 fast if you see/hear something happen, to increase the chances whomever’s doing this will be caught before somebody gets hurt.

Netflix recently uploaded a show called Hacking the System. Episode 1 has the host showing how to smash a window with a little piece of porcelain he broke off a crushed spark plug.

All he did was throw it right at the window and it shattered just like the above picture. There was hardly any sound.  It was intriguing and unbelievable at the same time.

I suspect more incidents like this will happen as kids seek to test this out for themselves.

That actually goes back years. First reference here was four years ago.

Wow.  May be harder to try and find those who commit these acts when the sound is barely audible and the instrument is so small.

The theories about motive(copycat vandalism, stupid prank, drumming up window replacement business, setting the stage for return theft, etc., all still seem plausible now, too.

I was on the 7:19 rapid ride from downtown last night. As we passed by the steel mill our bus was shot three times, presumably by BB gun. No injuries. Windows were broken but the safety glass stayed in the frame. The bus stopped a few times to assess but ultimately we just kept on our way.

When they find the people doing this I hope they have to pay for all their damage plus jail

It should be “whoever’s.” You wouldn’t say “Whom is doing this.”

My upstairs neighbors got hit yesterday on BOTH of their street-parked vehicles. Pretty bold considering we live right on Delridge next to Pearls. And timing was in broad daylight. Luckily they have a camera set up, and were able to have captured it. Not sure how clear it was, but its at least a start.

Jade – obviously the first stop for your neighbors’ video should be police – but if they are willing, we’d be interested in publishing it too – whether they upload it someplace like YouTube themselves or can send the video or at least screengrabs. Sorry to hear it happened. editor@westseattleblog.com – TR

I have been busy in the moving out process, partially due to said neighbors, and haven’t had the chance to check in with them. There was an officer that came out while in the midst of loading our UHaul Saturday afternoon. He was there actually when they were going through their footage, as I overheard in passing. My hopes is that the footage was handed over to the officer, and of some use. As a side note, if you are able to follow up with SPD, I would be curious to know the officers name. Between my daughter, the 2 sons of a friend helping, and 3 other tweens from up the block, they all agreed that he was “a cool cop.”

I was riding up Avalon from working at “that steel mill” last night and passed no less than three cars that had shattered windows. I also noted that the safety glass was in the frame on two of them and on the third it looked like it just fell out rather than was smashed in. I’ve also seen a lot of others recently.

Yet another car window shattered last night, near Cafe Ladro, between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Busy night for BB vandals!

I don’t think any reports have indicated what actually caused the window glass to shatter.  Until more is revealed about the cause, aluminum oxide shards from spark plug tips and BBs are still speculation.  It could have  been a resonant frequency generator too.

Our windshield was cracked by unknown object flying at it , we have a small crack but still need to replace it. This happened at Admiral Way! Stay safe.

We counted 5 cars not including mine that got hit on 16th Ave SW. Hopefully this video that Jade said captured them breaking windows on Delridge will put this to an end. I would like to be kept updated if this video did result in anything helpful.

Heard what sounded like rapid fire BB gun shots tonight around 8:30pm in the 9000 block of 16th Ave SW or the alley between 16th & 17th. Called it in, saw police cruise down the alley a short time later with their searchlight on, and then heard an officer talking to someone in the alley. Don’t know what came of it or whether it’s related to these prior incidents.

Early this morning I was about to drive my car , but i notice my car window was busted (Avalon and Gennesee), it looks like a BB gun shot I wanted to call the police, but I did not have to time to file a report.

It’s not too late to report – you could call the non-emergency # 206-625-5011 or file online – TR

Sorry, comment time is over.
